I have a Gateway 7510GX laptop, but it is not my main machine.

You mofos have guitar boasting threads; this is my guitar! (I have a 100 dollar guitar that came with an amp.... I want to learn one day).

Primary comp:

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811166004

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813127225

DVD drive:
http://shop.pcmag.com/shop/product_specs/Toshiba+SDR5372V+SDR5372VBK+DVDRW+Dual+Layer+Burne r+Products+/26704693.aspx

(I hate the DVD drive, it always reverts to PIO mode. It may be the fucking drive or something wrong with my configurations.

Floppy: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16821103116

onboard audio, NIC

The only complaint I have is the FUCKING ANNOYING PIO problem and... Dapper won't even boot on it. My laptop has virtually the same shit in it and it works fine!

Other than that... I give it a 10/10. The motherboard rules because it supports all 939's..... i could easily upgrade this comp in a few years when i feel it becoming sluggish.

4gb ram and a 4800 x2 when they are 250 bucks and double SLI cards when the next windows os requires such bullshit.

I did upgrade the hard drive a couple of months ago...originally had a Maxtor 4.3 gig hard drive, then a Maxtor 60 gig hard drive that bit the dust in two years time. I still have the 4.3, use it for a slave drive sometimes, but it's on it's last legs.

What is my computer? In a word, a piece of fucking shit! See above! I just put a new cmos battery in a little more than a month ago, and now the fucker says the battery is low and it's losing the time every time I turn it on now! Not only that, but it is agonizingly slow ever since I installed xp...must be that I don't have near enough memory to run it smoothly on xp. I think my memory is fried, anyhow. I need a new computer so bad! Can't afford it right now, though.

I wish I could build a guitar! I could build a PC in my sleep.... I'll trade skills with you!

Flappo: I want a Mac so badly! It will definitely be my next computer after this one is maxed out with upgrades. I think my current system will last about 5~6 years+ of primary use. Maxed out, my pc will have an X2 4800+ Dual AMD, with 4gb of ram. When I get to that point, it's time for a new computer (when that setup is considered slow).

...Actually I imagine, like guitar-building, each one gets easier. I just remember the components seeming so fragile they'd break if I looked at them wrong  Probably just first-time jitters on my part....

I'd tell you more but i don't know shit about computers.
I've noticed that most of us have computers that are barely able to run the latest games if at all. It is kind of ridiculous that the stuff we actually need computers for doesn't require that much muscle, it's the games and less importantly the graphics programs that take all the power. When i (rarely) buy computer games, it's never the latest ones. The cost of having to massively upgrade your computer is many times that of the game itself.

I run Linux on my fairly powerful laptop, but I hardly ever use it. My desktop won't even boot the latest version of Ubuntu, and it's no slouch either (3700+, 1gb). I stopped caring about Linux a long time ago because I was tired of configging it just to get it to do simple shit. If you want the power of Unix with a good gui, get a damn Mac. That's what I'm doing next month.

I work on enough Dells at work to know I will never buy one for myself. Although it is interesting to see the flaws in one model addressed in the next, and the most recent one we're using seems to be ok, still, I prefer to build my own.

Dude, go to Curcuit City and get your mother a nice computer that works and does 10 times more than that crap you're throwing together...

I don't have that kind of money, and besides, it has to be better than the Pentium III 600 with 256megs ram she's using now, even if it doesn't fit your definition as a high performance PC.

Ancient, home-built system:

Intel Celeron 433 megahertz processor
192 megs pc100 ram
Diamond Viper V550 video card w/16 megs ram
Viewsonic 17" Super VGA Monitor
HP 7500 series CD Burner
Western Digital 120 gig hard drive
Creative Soundblaster 64 gold
Soyo Motherboard

Yes, it's old as dirt, and slow as hell, but I can't afford to upgrade this pos right now! It was cutting edge back in it's day...8 years ago!

It's getting an Office Space style beating once I get a new computer!

Thought I would bring back this thread to update everyone on what machine I'm using now, and I was curious as to what everyone else was using, also. That "POS" slow computer that I was using back then, well I figured out what was wrong with it, fixed the problem, put it up for sale on craigslist, and now it is being used by an elementary school classroom in a nearby town. I've been through a few machines since that computer...a few P3's and P4's. My new rig...let's just say I've taken a big step up from the Celeron 433 I was using when I originally posted in this thread!

New, improved home-built system

Biostar TForce 965PT Motherboard
Intel E6600 Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz CPU

Western Digital Caviar Blue 320 GB 16 mb cache SATA II Hard Drive
Thermaltake TR2 470 Watt ATX Power Supply
Apex PC-319 Supercase
8 channel built-in HD Audio
Sony DVD/CD-RW 52x/32x/52x/16x Combo Drive
HP dvd 840 Lightscribe DVD Burner
Acer X183H 18.5" Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor
Altec Lancing PC Speakers

Damn! It's been a long time since I posted that! There's been a few developments since then! I bought a used Pentium III 500Mhz with 128 megs ram not too long after I posted that, and I had that for my main machine up until about a week ago. I just got through building a new computer, which isn't anything mindblowing, and some of you might even laugh, but it is light years better than the slow, ancient pieces of shit that I've been using, and I'm loving it so far! Here are the specs...

P4 SuperCase Mid Tower w/450w Power Supply
MSI 915PL Neo-V Motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 531 3.0 Ghz 1 meg cache 800 FSB Processor
MSI Nvidia GeForce 6600 video card w/128 megs ram, PCI Express
2 512meg sticks of DDR333 ram, 1 gig total (Buying 1 gig stick of DDR400 next week to replace DDR333)
Western Digital 160 Gb SATA 300 HD
AOpen 56k v.92 modem
Lite-On 52x CD-Rom Drive
Sony 52x/32x/52x/16x CD-RW/DVD Rom Combo Drive
Onboard 16 bit Audio
ViewSonic A70 17 inch SVGA monitor

I forgot about posting this! This was my system for about a month, then I traded motherboards/cpus and hard drives with the system I built for my mom because it kept freezing up.

I'm currently building another system for my mom with an extra motherboard that I have laying around that I bought on ebay around the time I bought the MSI board. Here are the specs on it...

still running the machine i built in '02 or so. 1.73 GHz, 2 GB of RAM on an Asus board, three hard drives and a DVD burner.

starting to plan out a new one, probably with HDMI out and all that good stuff. the old one will live on as a media server to feed my PS3's.

i bought an Acer Aspire One netbook in July. works well as a take-with machine, i don't always need an optical drive. gonna pull the 160 gig hard drive and go to 500 for a little more space, and i've already added the extra gig of memory. got a couple thumb drives i can move stuff back and forth with if i don't want to use the network.

Really? Apple is going through a scandal right now... All of their laptops are frying peoples' balls.

They get hot and I imagine the ones in the aluminum cases feel hotter than the plastic ones. My question is who is putting their bare balls on the computer case? They must be lying in bed with their laptop masturbating to porn and humping the computer to get off or something.

My how time flies.

These days I have a Quad-core 64-bit Athlon with 4 gigs of memory, about 500 gigs of hard drive space, a Creative X-Fi Platinum Sound Card, an ATI Radeon vid card (I forget which model, but it is PCI-Express).

Soon I will upgrade to Windows 7 (probably wait until the first service pack is released).

I currently have 5 different PCs and a laptop.
