I don't know why anybody even bothers touring with Opeth anymore...no matter who they're on the stage with, they kick everybody's ass and make everybody else look completely ridiculous by comparison...

Ben Stein?!?

WTF? I'm totally confused where you get that from...is it the acoustic passages that bother you, or...what?

I mean, I can understand somebody not liking Opeth because they're not into the acoustics and/or clean vocals, or they don't like Opeth because of the growling...or something like that...

But to call them shit because they "play slow" (which I don't really get, either, they're not particularly slow, per se) is akin to saying "I don't like guitars because they have strings"...

I mean, I guess Opeth could write the way they do and execute it old school Slayer/Kreator style...but it sure as hell wouldn't work for shit...

I can't understand how it's boring at all...Opeth, to me, is the most exciting thing to happen to metal since Iron Maiden...

Redballjets88
07-24-2006, 03:35 AM
in no way is it exciting in comparison to other things i like, but sense no one here seems to like screaming vocals, then no one likes them

and i guess to more old school fans they would be great

Well, that's kind of a sweeping generalization, don't you think?

In my opinion, what Opeth has accomplished over the years is truly amazing...they took a combination of 70's prog, folk music and death metal, blended it together in a very Iron Maiden/Celtic Frost-like package and made it readily digestable - they totally broke all of the preconceived notions and stereotypes that came with death metal in the process...no easy feat. And now, they're exceptionally popular based only on touring and word of mouth from person to person, as God knows radio won't give them any coverage...

Myself, I discovered them around "My Arms, Your Hearse" and have been totally blown away by their compositional skills, musicianship and raw talent as performers.

I'm always looking for new bands to dive into it. What do you think is opeth's best album? Is there a lot of growls on their records? I can't stand that shit.

07-24-2006, 03:47 AM
I mean, yeah, it's very "heady" music, sure, I can understand that's not something that interests a lot of people...but in no way should that be used as a reason to call Opeth "boring" or "lame" or "sucky"...

...because they absolutely aren't...

If they're not your cup of tea, that's cool, I can dig that, but that shouldn't be used as an excuse to label them as poor musicians...

Well...my personal favorite is "Blackwater Park"...and it's generally true with all of Opeth's stuff, you're going to get an equal amount of growling and clean vocals...that's just what they do.

HOWEVER - if you want to TOTALLY avoid the growling and still hear Opeth, pick up the album "Damnation". It's entirely acoustic (nothing electric at all), not even a metal album by definition...

...But the singing is completely clean, not one growl to be found anywhere...

The album they recorded at the same time and released a year before it was almost completely aggressive and growling, almost all the way through...

That one they called "Deliverance".

Well...Cannibal Corpse growling is a lot more extreme than Opeth's growling...at least in my case, I can't understand a fucking thing from Cannibal Corpse...with Opeth, you can actually understand the words, even though Mike Akerfeldt's growling...they're still comprehensible...

Ok, having read this thread, here's what I think.

Firstly, it's nice to see a full on metal tour, since the sad decline of Sharonfest...

Secondly, Opeth are one of the three most exciting and innovative heavy bands in the world right now (alongside Tool and Mastodon). People may not like them, but there is not way that they are shit.

I have no idea what they are like live, as I have yet to have the pleasure of seeing them.

Thirdly, good to see Megadeth in a headline position, new record on the way and fully fuckin metal!

Sounds like a gig to me....

DO IT!

Seen them twice now...Mike's a very low-key, softer speaking guy in between the songs...very real, down to earth and genuine. When they play, they play their songs all the way through and don't miss a beat.

VERY competant live performers.

He said he likes that shit they call metal nowdays with the shouting, generic, annoying vocals that sound like the same guy does the vocals for every one of those bands! Nuff said. I absolutely HATE that shit...some of those bands play pretty good musically, but the music is ruined by those shitty vocals!

Well, Lamb of God is basically some god awful death metal band that rips vocals off from Norwegian black metal. Children of Bodom is a Finnish quintet that sounds like a cross between Ram It Down-era Judas Priest and Celtic Frost. Vocals still kinda screamy, but decipherable

I agree with you that most modern metal bands are shitty, and that the Black Metal bands have been ripped off.

However, I think Lamb of god are an exception. Now they are by no means a great band, a good one at best. But they do stand apart from the crowd by doing some of the crazy time signatures that Meshuggah use (although by no means to the same effect.)

True, I have no desire to listen to them all the time, but they are a little different from most of the newer bands: they are a little more than "godawful death metal"

For that matter, any Overkill album is a good starting point. One of the very few bands that have been consistent with their sound-and have come nowhere near selling out.
Considering all Blitz (for those who aren't familiar, the singer) has been through lately with his health, that they are even together is nothing short of amazing.

The next Megadeth album has a title -- "United Abominations" -- but that's about it for the time being.

"We're putting the finishing touches on it," reports group leader Dave Mustaine, who's also preparing for the Sept. 6 start of the second Gigantour traveling heavy metal festival. "We've got a little more work before it's finished, but it should be out some time next year."

Mustaine says an initial Oct. 31 release date for the album, Megadeth's first as part of a new deal with Roadrunner Records, was "wishful thinking," and both the group and label felt a 2007 release was preferable to November or December of this year.

The singer/guitarist says the album, which he's producing with Jeff Balding, "has a lot of variation on it. It's got some surprises, but there's a really old-school vein to it, I would say." The group has been careful not to rush the album, either, holding sessions in London, Los Angeles and Nashville since earlier this year.

"We're taking our time with this one," Mustaine says. "It's a great feeling to make a record and not have our feet held to the fire. One of my heroes growing up was Kiss, but they really frustrated me 'cause they would put out a record just about every year. I couldn't figure that out. I pretty much have a cycle of about 18 months to 24 months between records. I just can't put them out any quicker than that and feel comfortable about them."

This being Megadeth, there will be some political underpinnings to the songs on "United Abominations." The title, in fact, comes from Mustaine's feelings about the United Nations' "failure to perform," particularly in crisis situations. "I was watching TV and saw the trucks that said 'UN' on them and said, 'Man, you are so uncool, ineffective, anything," he explains. "I thought, 'Wow, I've got to run with this. I got it -- United Abominations, 'cause it's an abomination what they're doing!"

Mustaine expects Megadeth to tour heavily in support of "United Abominations," perhaps into 2008.
