My favorite blues track of all time is "Beale Street Ain't Beale Street No More" by the Preacher, the Reverend, Gatemouth Moore. No second thought.

It's the only blues song ever written that's all about the blues and at the same time ain't nuthin' about the blues 'cos it has no wimmen and drinking. It has the loss of a whole street... and that's more than wimmen an' boozin'.

Not only that, it's a masterpiece of blues vocals, and the repetitive but classic blues riff towards the latter half of the song make it an unique track that is a MUST for any blues fan.

Howlin' Wolf may be my favorite blues singer... B.B. King my favorite geetar player... J.L. Hooker the master of both vocals and fingering the six strings... but there ain't nuthin'... an' I tells you nuthin'... like the Reverend belting out some vocals 'bout a lost street!

Cheers! :bottle:

Unfortunately, I don't know much blues. :o

However and I do know that two of the most stellar people that I've ever come across are way into it. *cough* DG and Loons *cough*

That more than does it for me. I'm only a student though. I know that blues is the most comfortable and truly soulful for me to play on the guitar though.

I love all of the old tracks and wanna learn so much more.

DG got me into Etta James and that voice!!! WOW!!!

Anyhoo, I guess I have too many happy things within my life to really have the blues? However, that music 'tis the best of the best. It's the foundation for EVERYTHING we all stand for and our Toastmaster General.

Soooooo...

I guess I have the blues? Can you dig it? ;)

They play some damn good blues from local favorites here on the AM stations in Montgomery. My favorite has to be "Strokin" by Clarence Carter.

Son House's "Death Letter."

He was a preacher, and got drunk ALOT. Perfect combination for the gritty delta variety. There's a video where Howlin' Wolf tells him to quit gettin' so messed up all the time.

This ain't it.

Johnny Cash's version of,"Another Man Done Gone," is stellar, superb, and luckier than Luciano.

I once read that Big Joe stole Baby Please Don't Go from Bessie Smith, The Empress Of The Blues.

Talk about a warhorse of a tune. Law'd have mercy!!

Is the car chasin' it or tryin' to beat it 'cross de tracks?

My favourite version of Baby Please Don't Go might just be Memphis Slim and Willie Dixon's version. It's chooglin'.

Page and Plant cooked it up real nice, too.

I don't know if Bessie ever recorded it, I think Big Joe stole the idea of the tune when they were involved.

"Lone Wolf Blues"--Oscar"Buddy"Woods

Recorded March 21st, 1936. It's from the LP: "Out came the blues" (Coral CP 58, 1970)).

Mama mother told me, when I was quite a child (2x)
I say the life that you are living will kill you after a while

I just begin to realize the things my mother say (2x)
Since I been down here I been mistreated this way

I never loved no one woman, hope to God I never will (2 x)
All these triflin' women will get some good man killed

Now I ain't no monkey and I sho' can't climb a tree (2x)
And I ain't gonna let no woman make no monkey out of me

Now I sent my baby a brand new twenty-dollar bill (2x)
If that don't bring her, I know my shotgun will

Nothin' But The Debil--Lightnin' Slim

Well you know yourself little girl
You ain't treatin' your daddy right
You leave home in the evenin'
And you ride the streets all night
That ain't -
nothin' but the devil
Make you treat me like you do
I'm gon' break out just like the measles
Girl I'm gonna be all over you
Well you know yourself little girl
That you treatin' your daddy wrong
You leave home in the mornin'
And you stay 'way all day long
That ain't -
nothin' but the devil
Make you treat me like you do
I'm gon' break out just like the measles
Girl I'm gonna be all over you
Well now break out son...
Well you dressed up early this mornin' babe
You're lookin' like a queen
You're goin' to see your mother
But your mother you ain't never seen
It ain't -
nothin' but the devil
Make you treat me like you do
Girl I'm gon' break out just like the measles
Girl I'm gonna be all over you

All 29 of Robert Johnson's songs (especially "Preachin' Blues (Up Jumped The Devil)").

Pretty much anything written by Willie Dixon.

"Mannish Boy"-Muddy Waters
"Built for Comfort"-Howlin' Wolf (what a voice!)
"I'm Ready"-Frankie Miller's Version
"I Just Want To Make Love To You"-Paul Rodgers' Version
"I'm a Man"-Bo Diddley (whom I shalt be seeing in June)
"Bo Diddley"-Bo Diddley
"House Rent Boogie"-John Lee Hooker
"Fanny Mae"-Southside Johnny (no idea who did the original)
"Ain't No Love In The Heart of the City"-Whitesnake's vers. (orig. Bobby Bland)
"I'm in the Mood"-John Lee Hooker
"Black Betty"-Lead Belly
"Why I Sing The Blues"-BB King
"How Blue Can You Get"-BB King

There was song that The Blues Brothers did on "Briefcase Full of Blues" called "Shotgun Blues"...dunno who did it originally or who wrote it.

Death Valley Is Just Half Way To My Home--Lonnie Johnson

Looked down that long old lonesome road
Looked down that long old lonesome road
My poor feet is gettin' tired, but still I've got to go

There's no train to my home town, ain't but the one way to go
There's no train to my home town, ain't but the one way to go
That's mile after mile, trampin' that muddy road

It's just one thing, that worries me both night and day
Ain't but one thing, that worries me both night and day
There's a place they call Death Valley, and it's just halfway

You can't see a house, in twenty-five miles around
I can't see nobody, goin' towards my ol' home town
I've still got three hundred miles to go, and my poor feet is giving down

I can hear the wild cats and panthers, howl when the sun go down
Can you hear the wild cats and panthers, howlin' when the sun go down
And I've got to go through Death Valley, to get to my old home town

I've been trampin' this lonely road, forty nights and days
My poor legs is gettin' tired, don't help me someways
Cause I've got three hundred miles to go, trampin' in this mud and clay
