I still think pre-season polls suck...even with my favorite team in first...

Coaches rank Buckeyes No. 1, ahead of LonghornsSportsTicker

McLean, Va. -- Despite having to replace nine starters on defense, Ohio State on Friday was named the No. 1 team in the USA Today preseason college football poll.

Coming off a 10-2 record and a Fiesta Bowl victory over Notre Dame, the Buckeyes received 28 of 63 first-place votes and 1,487 points from Division I-A coaches.

Ohio State has to overhaul its defense with the graduation of several stars, including the entire starting linebacking trio of A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter and Anthony Schlegel. But the Buckeyes have talented players waiting in the wings, and they return nearly all of their key players on offense, including quarterback Troy Smith and wide receiver and return specialist Ted Ginn Jr., both Heisman Trophy candidates.

Defending national champion Texas (13-0) is second after receiving 11 first-place votes and 1,378 points. But the Longhorns, who won a championship for the ages with a 41-38 triumph over Southern California in the Rose Bowl, have to replace all-everything quarterback Vince Young, who left after his junior season and was drafted third by the Tennessee Titans.

Notre Dame (9-3) and USC (12-1) are tied for third with 1,348 points apiece. The Fighting Irish are entering their second season under coach Charlie Weis, while the Trojans begin life without quarterback Matt Leinart and running back Reggie Bush, the last two Heisman winners. Notre Dame received nine first-place votes and USC one.

Oklahoma (8-4) is fifth with 1,320 points. The Sooners had the second-most first-place votes -- 13 -- but those doubtlessly came in before the news Wednesday that coach Bob Stoops permanently dismissed starting quarterback Rhett Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn from the team for being paid far in excess of hours worked at a local car dealership.

Auburn (9-3), which received the remaining first-place vote, is sixth, while West Virginia (11-1), Florida (9-3), Louisiana State (11-2) and Florida State (8-5) complete the top 10.

Miami (9-3) is 11th, followed by California (8-4), Louisville (9-3), Georgia (10-3), Michigan (7-5), Virginia Tech (11-2), Iowa (7-5), Clemson (8-4), Penn State (11-1) and Oregon (10-2).

TCU (11-1), Nebraska (8-4), Tennessee (5-6), Alabama (10-2) and Texas Tech (9-3) complete the poll.

Thought N.D. would be ranked ahead of Texas, oh well.

Sooners will drop out of top 10, maybe top 15 after Rhett "Have I got a car for you", Bomar was dismissed.

Helluva discrepancy...

Penn State is #3 in the AP poll, but #19 in the coaches poll....

They're an enigma again this year....

Morrelli at QB this year, with a good set of WR's....

Could surprise some people again....

OSU lost 9 defenders...normally the strength of their team...

I know their O is loaded...but playing Texas before that D gels...in Austin...might not boad well...

Should be one hell of a football season. It seems to me that every team except Notre Dame has questions with their line ups.

The beloved Sooners are going to have one hell of a time. We now have three QBs on Scholarship, and our starting QB ran routes all spring. The only time he threw a ball was to toss it back to the coach handing the ball to the guy throwing him passes, who's ass is now back in the great toilet of Texass.

STUPID ASS Bomar.

By the way, thank you J.D. Quinn, now were even thinner at o-line. The defense is going to be hellacious again. We lost two DT's last year who would have been all conference. We get them bacl (Williams and Birdine). Now we get to platoon them with two guys that got lots of snaps last year. Top that off with the addition of True Freshman Gerald McCoy (6'4"" 305). Scouting report is that he is better as a true freshman than Tommie Harris was. We all now the stellar career of Tommie Harris. Word is, McCoy is going to start at DT.

We also signed a freak TE. Germaine Grisham. 6'7" listed at 230, Coach Schmidt says he's 265 now. Clocked in the 40 on Tuesday at 4.47. He'll be the starting TE as a true freshman.

The questions are:
Will the o-line be any good?
Will we see a real FB emerge with the departure of J.D. Runnels to the Bears?
Can Paul Thompson throw the ball deep to get 9 men out of the box?
How many yards will Peterson rush for?

IF Thompson can throw the ball more than 15 yards, Peterson goes for over 2,000. Peterson said his goal for the season is 2,500 yards and 20 TDs.

Speaking of freaks...Coach Schmidt (strenght and conditioning) said this of Peterson. "I came in to watch them doing the plyometric box jump drill. Peterson is finished, the rest of the RBs leave. Peterson goes back to the boxes picks up an 80 pound dumbell with each hand, and does 25 reps on the 36 inch box." That is freaky strong right there guys.

By the way...Texass still sucks!

no texas doesnt suck, but keep thinkin that.

IMO depending on the outcome of the Texas vs Ohio St. game texas can/will be playing for the national title....no one in the Big 12 north or south can touch them...and dont say Texas Tech has a chance because Texas knows how to defend their spread shit scheme like no other, thats why everytime they have played recently Texas has stomped them.

its also good to see 'Bama in the top 10

Actually, if you look at the Texass TEch since the mad scientist Mike LEach arrived, he puts up obscene numbers against everybody except OU and Texass. Say what you want, Texass still sucks. The school sucks, the state sucks, and all the teams with it in their names suck. And they wear a freaking cow on the side of their helmets. In puke orange no less. I hate Texass, I've always hated Texass, and I'll always hate Texass.

No way The Ohio State Penntentary makes it throug the little 11, I mean Big Ten undefeated with a revamped defense.

One thing you can count on though is this: If Notre Dame goes undefeated, they will be playing for the National Championship. Look at their schedule, its insane.

One thing everybody needs to know about HOP is this: I love OU. I graduated from OU, I bleed Crimson and Cream, and I worship at the altar of OU football. Barry Switzer is my King and Bob Stoops is my President. Every other football team in the world can go to hell, because if it ain't OU, I don't care! And I absolutely HATE the following: Texass, the Miami Hurricons, Stoolwater Community College (aka Ok State), Nebraska, USC, LSU, UCLA, Notre Dame, Little 11 football, and damn near anybody else I feel like hating.

Let me begin...you wear a cow on the side of your head. Your colors are puke orange and white. You didn't win a title for how many years, yet everyone talks about tradition. We got 7 baby, the most in the modern era of college football. 50, 54, 55, 74, 75, 85, and 00. We have 39 Conference championships and 39 Bowl Championships.

Bring me to the modern age of Texass football...
You have the winningest QB in the history of the Big XII, Major Applewhite (also known as Sooner Killer, another reason I hate Texass), and your coach, Smack Brown benches him for the golden boy, Chrissy Simms, and look how that worked out. Vince Young was all everything, how many starts against OU did he have? How many wins? We kicked your asses 63-14 with a lefty who couldn't run and supposedly couldn't throw (Josh Heupel, he finished second to Winke in the Heisman, and coaches the OU QBs now) and 65-13 with a QB with 2 bad knees, a bad elbow, a bad shoulder, a bad ankle, who everyone wrote off (Jason White who did win a Heisman in a season in which he had thrown 40 something touchdowns to single digit interceptions without a real running back).

Then you've got the whole Texass attitude...everything is bigger in Texass, Texass, it's like a whole other cuntry. Well you know what since its so big, and like a whole different cuntry, why don't you take your monkey asses out. Fucking no talent ass clowns.

Don't get me wrong, we know Texass produced some great OU football players. We like to refer to them as the smart ones. You know, the ones who got the hell out of Texass to play football at a real school.

Then you have the attitude of UT students and professors. "Texass has the best engineering/pharmacy, med school, accounting, business school in the country." Guess what? OU has the most National Merit Scholars per capita of everybody. That is more than Harvard, Yale, Brown, and yes Texass. I'll put the University of Tulsa's engineering, law, and business schools against Texass's any day. And I'll put OU law, engineering, business, pharmacy, and med school up against 'em too.

Do you know why Oklahoma has so many Tornados? Because Texass sucks and Kansas blows.

How many UT freshman does it take to screw in a light bulb? None, its a sophmore class.

How do you get a Texass cheerleader in an elevator? Put Crisco on her hips and throw a twinkie through the door.

Take my advice all...beat the rush, hate Texass now.

And remember you can't spell SLUT without UT.

Well...here we go....

1. I don't give a flying fuck about Oklahoma football, never have, never will.

2. I can't stand people that talk about ALL-TIME SERIES. Teams that LOST talk about that shit. I want to know WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY. Ask Michigan what their lifetime record against the Bucks is, and they'll have it chalked up and ready to go...since they've lost 4 of 5 to Tressel and the Bucks.

3. I have no problem with one team shredding another. If you are a Texas fan, you are supposed to hate Oklahoma football...and vice versa. You are supposed to talk shit...it's what makes good rivalries...

and why Ohio State v. Michigan is far and away the best rivalry in college athletics today.

Onto the comments on OSU's defense...yes, they lost 9 of 11 on the D...and that's not a good thing...as I've said from the start. But they reload from one of the hottest recruiting areas in the country...and they have loads of defensive talent. It's not about being good players...but gelling. If they beat Texas (and they will), going undefeated in the best conference in all the land will certainly be in their sites.

But I'm still trying to figure out how Texas is ranked #2 in the coaches poll...

losing a defense...and losing the leader of your team is 2 different things...

Oh, I know...it's really...really hard to guage a team based on last season...even if they return a bunch of players...

1. OSU was led by their defense...period...and they pleyed well enough that their offense could gel late in the season...that's gone...so it will be up to the O to do what the D did last year...which...isn't as easy...

2. Texas lost their leader...and will reload...but rare is the day of a team going back to back national titles with 2 different qb's...especially when the new qb is so young...

3. Notre Dame and PSU are both coming off solid seasons...but it truly is DIFFERENT when you walk into a season expected to be good...when the season before...you were basically an afterthought (now Paterno knows how to deal with that I'm sure...but we'll see if Weis is)...

USC lost a ton...reloaded for sure...and plays in a shitty conference...but we'll see...

Oklahoma lost their starting QB...

I still think WVU is the team to beat based on schedule and returning starters...

Since Texas plays North Texas the first week, OSU will probably be favored no matter what. Anyway, the Defense should be much better this year. Still I would have ranked them and would have preferred to have them ranked no higher than 5th or 6th going into the season.

Hope you have a great time at the game!

Texas will not be near as good this year as they were last year. You can't lose a player of Vince Young's caliber and not expect to take a big hit. I think they'll still have a good season, but no National Championship this year for the 'Horns.

Sorry bro, but I'm going to HAVE to disagree with that statement. You don't have to put up with your rival 24/7..365 days a year. Here they are your co-workers, your family, your friends, your fuckin' mayor. Alabama vs. Auburn is the most INTENSE rivalry around. People have shot each other over this fucking rivalry...I'm not shitting you! I'm not saying I agree with such behavior, but that shit happens.

POJO_Risin
08-13-2006, 05:12 PM
Feel free to disagree...you'd just be wrong...

Not by much...but you'd be wrong.

The difference you are talking about is an in-state difference...I get that...and there are no other major universities in Ohio...so no big deal...

but it's been a State vs. State rivalry at the level you are talking about...and above that...has had national considerations yearly since 1960ish....nearly every year...and the years that National Titles aren't up for grabs...certainly the big 10 game...

Maybe at a daily Hatfield vs. McCoy (???) way...

but no way...you are kidding yourself...if you think that when it comes to the game...there is anywhere near as much hate that boils over then when these two teams face each other.

It's impossible to describe, and it's impossible to compete...

but there is no other rivalry that equals in level, stakes and pure unadulterated hatred...

as Michigan-OSU.

BrownSound1
08-15-2006, 02:30 AM
I'll disagree and be nowhere near wrong. :D Hell, it got so rough at one point with Auburn and Alabama that they had to suspend the series because of fighting at the game among the fans. Of course historically the National Title implications have been on the Alabama side many times more than the Auburn side, but since 1960...well that's 7 National Titles that 'Bama could have lost if Auburn had beat them.

Redballjets88
08-19-2006, 03:01 PM
my team is texas and always has been, but Alabama is my second favorite, and while i'd love for Texas OU or texas v Texas a&m to be the greatest rivalry, or even 'bama v auburn Ohio St. Michigan is the best rivalry, like the saying one of my best friends is a die hard michigan fan, and when michigan and ohio st play its like a religious expierence at that house no one comes no one goes and his dad might kill someone if something goes wrong in the game. IMO the best rivalrys go like this

1. michigan v ohio st
2. Army v Navy
3. Alabam Auburn
4. Texas v Texas a&m
5. Florida v Florida st.
6. Texas v OU

and the rest are really close

POJO_Risin

Okay...as I said before..Michigan v. Ohio State is a national rivalry...

and the stakes nearly every year have one or the other playing for the Big 10 and the national title...

1944--OSU wins and wins the Big 10 title...knocking U of M out of a share of the lead.

1949--Michigan and OSU tie...and share the big 10 title...

1950--Michigan wins...which gives them the title and the Rose appearance...OSU wins...they go...

1954--OSU wins the game...and the Big 10...and wins the Rose Bowl...had Michigan won...they would have shared the title...and gone to the Rose Bowl...

1955--OSU wins the game and the Big 10 title...but doesn't go to the Rose because you can't go 2 years in a row...had Michigan won...they win the Big 10 and go to the Rose Bowl...

1964--Michigan wins (and the Big 10)...and wins the Rose Bowl...had OSU won...they win the Big 10...

1968--OSU wins and wins the Rose...had Michigan won...they win the title...and goto the Rose...

1969--Michigan wins...ties OSU for the Big 10 title...goes to the Rose...had OSU won...they win the title outright...

1970--OSU wins...wins the Big 10 and goes to the Rose...had Michigan won...they win the title...

1972--OSU wins the game...shares the Big 10 title with UM...and goes to the Rose...Michigan wins the title outright with a win...

1973...Michigan and OSU tie...tie for the conference...and the AD's vote OSU to the Rose...

1974...OSU wins the game...ties for the Big 10 title with U of M...and goes to the Rose...UM would have won the title outright if had they won..

1975...OSU wins the game...wins the Big 10 title...and goes to the Rose...UM wins the title outright had they won...

40% of their games have a direct result in the outcome of the Big 10 champion...

and that doesn't include Big 10 titles won...where the winner or loser of the game isn't effected...

and...since all of the games I listed were after 1935...that means that these 41 games...

are out of the past 71 years...

;)

POJO_Risin

Now...since 1913...both teams have shared or won the big 10 title...72 times...

Michigan's all time winning percentage in the Big 10 is .700...

so is OSU's...

the next highest?

Illinois at .470...

USC was a MUCH better team in 2004, their defense was near the top of the country. The defense is what cost them a title last year.

Texas fans are funny, they were 1/2 yard and :09 seconds from losing, but they act like they beat USC by 4 TD's.

I think they played like a typical Pete Carrol team.

Go back and search his team stats when he coached in the NFL. The Pats were the most penalized team in football when he coached them. They had no discipline, they got stupid penalties, and they choked. Which is exactly what his Trojenz did against Texass.

I'm glad it got moved to the first game. That's all they have been preparing for and feeding off of. The Hogs winning this game at home will not be a shocker. Not according to Vegas anyway. ;)

A team that wins 34 games in a row and two national titles is undisciplined? ROFL! Now that's just bitter nonsense.

Pete Carroll is the best coach in the country, but if your haterade makes you think otherwise, fine by me.

It'll be a bit closer than 70-17 I would guess. I got to the game late last year because of traffic, it was 21-7 before I even sat down. :)

The game means a lot more to Arkanas than to USC, so you never know. I can't imagine SC wouldnt' win it, but you never know.

The Hogs are gonna surprise some people this year. New OC, his star QB who was the #1 ranked high school player in the country last year and is itching to get in there. Once Mustain gets his bearings, with the spread offense we will be running and the running game we have, the defenses aren't gonna be able to predict what we are doing like they have the last few years.

we still have the record with 47, but if you want to pump up your team and your coach fine with me. You did kick the crap out of us in the 2005 Orange Bowl.

I think the discipline aspect came from Chow. Lose Chow, lose the discipline. Add that to being able to roll over everybody in the country, building your ego, confidence, whatever, and it can make for some serious problems, as you saw in the Rose Bowl with Texass last year.

And for the record, I really only hate Ok State, Texass (the whole state and all the schools), and the Miami Hurricons. Some my haterade only runs so deep.

And for the record I think the best coach in the counrty is Charlie Wies at Notre Dame. And President Stoops runs only microns behind him.

All this whining about Texas, and if SC converts a 4th and 1 we're not talking about anything other than 35 in a row. Yes I know OU won 47 in a row. What does that have to do with anything? So now 34 in a row isn't impressive??

And no Charlie Weis is not the best coach in the country, and he was badly outcoached in the Orange Bowl. We'll see how good of a coach he is, because ND his highly ranked this year.

He hasn't been one team he shouldn't have. They've gotten more mileage out of a loss (USC) than any team I've ever heard of.

No doubt he was badly outcoached in the Fiesta...

and Tressel is up there with any coach in the land...

but he has the enviable position of drafting out of Ohio...which has more high schools per capita than what...45 states?...

but he runs an offense that is relatively moderate...but allows for a good player to get creative...

and is a staunch defensive coach...

and can recruit...

and beats his best rival...

he's up there with anyone...

houseofpain
08-25-2006, 01:22 PM
All Stoops did was beat his arch rival five years in a row, two of the five years very badly. The REAL Roy Williams gave what we in Oklahalen refer to as "The Play" and yes we do call Roy Superman. Lets see, Stoops won The 2000 Big XII Championship, The 2001 Orange Bowl which resulted in the 2000 Nat'l Championship, 2002 Cotton Bowl (with no offense), the Rose Bowl in 2003, The Big XII South in 2003, Sugar Bowl 2004 (lost to LSU), won the Big XII Championship in 2004, played for the 2004 Nat'l Championship in 2005 against USC, and beat the number 6 team in the country in the Holliday Bowl last season. I kind of like President Stoops.

It's tough to argue against Tressel. The guy puts up results. Kicks the crap out of Michigan every year. Probably will cost Carr his job in the end.

I am very pleased to see nobody nominating Smack Brown!

Texas WILL NOT win the Nat'l championship with a freshman at QB. They will easily falter somewhere along the line, mostly likely early against OSU.

Hell they wouldn't have won it last year if not for the heroics of Vince Young. One man beat an entire team, I've never seen anything like it in my life. The most frustrating game I've ever watched, because we couldn't fucking contain ONE guy. That and of course 4th down with Reggie Bush on the sidelines, I don't care how many fucking times Carroll says he's run that same play with Bush on the bench.

Colt McCoy, the redshirt freshmen qb, dating myself here but I played college ball with his dad, Brad, he was a db. Now I only found this out a while back reading his profile on a UT website. In my defense Brad had kids at a very early age and he was a couple of years older. :D Neat though, huh?

Anyway both the young QB's there, McCoy and Jevan Snead, are very talented, can't replace the plays VY made with his feet though. Texas is very deep every where else. Right now, I'd be happy with a Big 12 title and a BCS bowl berth. It's doable.

POJO_Risin

The thing about McCoy and Snead is that they are both pocket passers. Vince was not. Vince made it very easy for that line...because he moved around a lot...avoided the rush. McCoy and Snead both won't be near as effective...so there are many questions.

I have seen Freshmen do weird things...and they have a lot of talent around. If they can avoid mistakes...AND if they beat OSU...which is possible...

The CAN win the National Title...

by December...freshman aren't freshman any more...

do I think it will happen?

No.

Do I think OSU will beat them by more than 7?

Yes...

;)

and so it begins...
