View Full Version : The one song that DEFINES Rock n' Roll for you!

Mr. Vengeance

Doesn't have to be your favorite tune. Doesn't haveto be a best selling tune. Doesn't have to be modern or old. Just a rock tune that spells out what you believe rock n' roll is. Any reason is good enough! But you have to give a reason.......otherwise get flamed!

My vote- Maybellene by Chuck Berry

A driving rhythm, classic guitar style, and lyrics that just simply paint a picture! As Bruce Springsteen once said, he's never seen a "Coffee coloured Cadillac", but if you listen to the song, you can picture it!

Unchained Just has this energy through the tune, Thats the song that Brought me into liking CVH, It showcases The Height of What a Guitarist and Frontman should be. Roth Doing His thing during the interval and Ed playing his ass off. The live Vid. also showcases this well.

Back In The Saddle- Aerosmith is One of those band that is very hard not to find a fan of, You Can hate The New Era, But I mean this tune is just great, Loud hard stomping Ass kicking Rock and Roll, Tyler Had attitude in this tune. Rocks is a Great Album and Captures America's Greatest Rock And Roll Band (I'm not Technically including CVH, Being that ED and Al are From The Netherlands. But CVH was the Greatest band EVER. Of any Nation period.), at its peak. I would encourage every new musician to pick up this album for encouragement.

For me, it would have to be Smooth Up In Ya by the Bulletboys. I think this because it's got that hornyness and attitude that hard rock needs. And the guitar has that greasy tone that just oozes raunchy

Hangar 18 --- Cool lyrics, insane solo. Fun to crank in car rides to the beach on weekends.

CVH - Jump. Everyone turns this up and sings along when it comes on the radio.

Well.....there is so much to choose from.

Kinda impossible for me to narrow it down to just one.

Some likely candidates:

Jimi Hendrix - 3rd Stone From The Sun

Led Zep - Rock 'n' Roll

Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance

Michael Schenker - On & On

The above are my four major influences of my guitar style, so it only follows those artists would define rock and roll for me.

Gotta throw Crazy Train into the mix. (Ozzy)
When I heard that for the first time, I remember
thinking, Now thats fucking Rock and Roll !!

Black Dog (Led Zep) is another, but unfortunately Radio has
killed my love of it. (Played way too much)
But I loved it the first few thousand times....

Anarchy for the UK/ God Save the Queen... (Sex Pistols)
That was like, FUCK ME !!! The sound, the attitude,
ROCK AND ROLL !!

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.. Quite possibly the heaviest
ever metal song...

Unchained... (No explanation needed)

Master of Puppets METALLICA !!!
Like em or hate em, that whole album
(and particularly that song) defined Rock and Roll
at its best..

Peace Sells (Megadeth)
Remember when they sampled the bass riff and
played it on practically every break on MTV ??

Electric Eye (Judas Priest)

Run to the Hills (Maiden)

1950's:Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry-this is the greatest rock and roll song ever written. the A-D-E 3 chord progression has been the foundation and cornerstone on which the greatest riffs and a lot of the most popular songs of all time stem from.

1960's:Voodoo Chile(Slight Return) by Jimi Hendrix. this riff d'jour speaks for itself.

1970's:Rock And Roll All Night by Kiss.this song is the Rock And Roll National Anthem.nuff said!

1980's:Unchained by The Mighty CVH!!!

1990's:Be Quick Or Be Dead by Iron Maiden

2000-present:Judar Rising by Judas Priest

The one song that defines Rock n Roll for me?

Led Zep - Black Dog.

True, it's overplayed, but for me it's got everything,

Great Riff

Great Vocal

Great solo

And plenty of attitude.

There are loads of other songs that come close, in particular

ACDC - Let There Be Rock

The building in that song, the energy just captures the live essence of rock n roll on record....

Another headache!...

The biggest shock after seeing VH lip sync "You really got me" on TV when I was 8 years old, when I first played "Black Dog" on my turntable at the age of 14. A friend of my parents's had lent me Led Zeppelin II and IV, and the first minutes of "Black Dog" were incredible for me to listen to. It sounded like nothing I knew - and it still doesn't -, like out of no time... It's still like you can't date this particular tune, as far as sound and general ambience.

Between CVH and Led Zeppelin, when AC/DC released "Hell's Bells", I remember playing it in my head on repeat mode, then on the juke box at the bar where I used to play pinball with my best pal in 1981, until our parents discovered it (yikes!). There were 15-18-year-olds who kept waiting for us to lose our game - and they kept waiting as I showed them tricks that they couldn't do :D - and it was war with the juke box too as they'd play Italian la-di-da songs, to which we replied with "Hell's Bells" or the B-side, "You shook me all night long". We were the brats who would teach those tall jerks how to play pinball and what rock 'n' roll was about!... How delightful it still is, thinking back. :)
Then I discovered Bon Scott's records, "If you want blood" in particular. I think "Rock 'n' roll damnation" is the ultimate rocker, as it best synthetizes what it is all about, the sound attack, riffing, beat, structure... IMO. Like the quintessence of rock, I think.
Damn, I've got to play it at once now! :D

Great call....that version is fucking TERRIFYING!

The first time I saw it was at a midnight movie in the late 70s/early 80s, and needless to say I was knocked the fuck OUT! To this day, everytime I watch that it blows me away.

In my opinion that is the second greatest Hendrix solo of all time....the first (for me) being Machine Gun from the Filmore East performance. In my mind, Machine Gun is the single greatest guitar solo of all time.

Tough to name just one...or even just ten. Here are some off the top of my head:

Led Zep - Black Dog - kicks ass and has been on the radio as "Rock" ever since my first radio.

AC/DC - Back In Black - almost the same reason as Zep. Lots of testosterone.

Van Halen - Runnin' With The Devil - rockers were defined as running with the devil.

Metallica - Master of Puppets - First heavy song that most everyone liked. Before school in 10th grade, almost every car or truck had that on when they pulled up to school.

Def Leppard - Photograph - One of the first rock songs that even the girls in junior high school liked (even with their Duran Duran)

Quiet Riot - Metal Health/Bang Your Head - Cause rockers are headbangers.

Two songs come to mind.

First the greatest rock and roll song of all time - Peggy Sue. Listen to the rolling drums and suddenly it makes sense that people called it jungle music. Add in that guitar solo - loud, chaotic, brilliant! Everyone since is a pussy by comparison.

The other would be Sweet Jane. Hands down the coolest song ever with the greatest guitar riff of all time. No other song makes you feel so cool when you play it.

Truth is Vengeance, it's pretty tough to determine which song REALLY
defines rock n' roll. All these artists have done a bang-on job with writing these songs that they deserve some mention. That's the way I see it.

Okay you really want to know which song really does serve rock n'roll justice? AC/DC's Shook Me All Night Long. Problem is songs like that get way too much airtime.

That's one of the reasons why we list so many. These songs get overkill playtime and that partially ruins the effect.

Actually, taking this question more literally, (to appease the
pissed off Mr V) I would have to say "Rock around the Clock"
Bill Hayley and the Comets, 1954..

Surely this was the first song to mention the actual word "Rock"
and pre-dated the much defined "first song of Rock", "Thats
all right Mama" by the King himself, Elvis Presley..
(1955, I think)

Rock around the Clock definately had the Rock beat/sound
happening, and the lyrics specified "Rocking" all night long...
Decades before Kiss ever did :p Not sure if the term "Rock"
was ever used in a song prior to this, so this could be the
winner....

If its not the one song that defines "Rock" to you, its
definately the first..... (If you are chronologically correct)

In addition....

I know "Freed" apparently were the first to use the term "Rocking and Rolling", correct me if Im wrong, but this was after 1954's "Rock around the Clock"

Onya Bill Hayley and the Comets !!

They defined "Rock"

after plying "rock around the clock" by bill haley and his comets on a cleaveland, ohio radio station in 1954,alan freed came on air and stated, "hey folks, it's really rocking and rolling in here!".thus,
rock and roll music was born.
