YouTube talks to record labels
Yinka Adegoke in New York
AUGUST 16, 2006

VIDEO website YouTube is in talks with record labels over plans to post thousands of music videos online.

YouTube, which sprung from nowhere a year ago to claim over 100 millions views a day, is negotiating for rights to post current and archive music videos on its site, and said any commercial model it decides on will offer the videos free.
"What we really want to do is in six to 12 months, maybe 18 months, to have every music video ever created up on YouTube," co-founder Steve Chen said. "We're trying to bring in as much of this content as we can on to the site."

He said YouTube would differentiate itself from pay-to-view or download services like Apple's iTunes and Yahoo Music, which is supported by an advertising revenue share model with record labels.

YouTube said its videos would account for 60 per cent of all videos watched online. The site specialises in short, homemade clips created by users.

he start-up plans to integrate the record companies' videos into the community features of its site, allowing users to add the videos to their own profiles and post reviews.

The business model is being developed in tandem with all the major record labels, Mr Chen said, but did not give any names. Warner Music Group and EMI confirmed that they had been in discussions with YouTube.

"Yahoo Launch is almost an exact parallel of MTV but viewed through a web browser," Mr Chen said. "We add the whole user community feel, with 100 million views every day and user-generated content."

Getting the record labels to agree to a business model is crucial as YouTube has run into trouble in the past when users posted copyrighted videos from television shows.

In March start-up was asked by television broadcaster NBC to remove clips of the popular "Lazy Sunday" hip-hop spoof, which was originally broadcast on "Saturday Night Live."

However, the order by NBC was a precursor to a June promotional partnership with YouTube. YouTube said its policy was to take down pirated content from the site as soon as it was aware.

"Right now we're trying to very quickly determine how and what the model is to distribute this content and we're very aggressive in assisting the labels in trying to get the content on to YouTube," Mr Chen said.

"We're obviously interested in legitimate use scenarios and trying to broaden those, and our focus with YouTube is how to be partners while protecting our artists and ensuring they get paid," said Michael Nash, senior vice-president of digital and business development at Warner Music.

YouTube on Tuesday suffered its first unplanned outage, lasting six hours, and blamed a database-related issue.

"To clarify and ensure accuracy, the site is not down for maintenance," YouTube spokeswoman Julie Supan in a statement released shortly before the site recovered. "This was an unplanned outage."

That link doesnt work for me either, so I just cut and pasted the article. I think the control characters in the URL are upsetting the PHP software..

The link is not showing up as the normal "yellow"

Mmh, I doubt that this bug was that neglectible...
Either major record companies are nitpicking about YouTube's actual rights to broadcast all their stuff (and there's some! including a great proportion of many copyrighted vids; I'll never complain about it, of course, but those sharks won't miss another opportunity to cram their pockets once again), and maybe they agreed about not making it public, while they're trying to withdraw clips that they were urged to take out?
Or their database has grown so huge that they can no longer make it work technically?
Anyway, I may be wrong, but I'm afraid that we've lived the best moments over the last few months.

Goddamnit, that means YouTube will start running commercials before every fucking video like the other sites are doing. And half the time the commercial works, but the real video doesn't.

Hopefully, they'll just tag the cash cows with commercials and leave the other stuff alone.

No shit! I thought it was just me. I hate when the commercial shows and then it stalls out after. Usually news clips that I watch from Yahoo do that. And there is no way to fast forward the commercial, so if you watch a few in a row, you have to watch the same fucking commercial over & over. It's hell. (Which should make you feel right at home)
