View Full Version : "Worst" of Judas Priest

This one for me is easy as fuck! Jugulator. This thing was shit!!!!! I actually found a couple of songs I could dig on Demolition which was also a Ripper album, but Jugulator...good lord. Had those Ripper albums not been made, I'd go with Ram it Down, which was even wimpier than Turbo.

Discuss.....

Shaun Ponsonby

Jugulator and Demolition, but they still have their moments. Thats the thing with Priest, if they make a bad album, its not that its bad, its that its patchy.

I actually quite like Turbo. Its just different.

"Ram it down".

Every song is either an unimaginitive romp about sex or how we all love Heavy Metal.

Not terrible but nowhere near the standard of any of the albums before it.

It would be easy enough to say the Ripper albums and let it go at that.

But Halford wrote a pathetic song or two in his day.

I know you like it hot
Love to writhe and sweat
You think that this feels good
You ain't felt nothin' yet

Red-hot licks in the palm of my hand
Feel your body quake
As we hit the promised land
I'm heavy duty

We'll rise inside ya till the power splits your head
We're gonna rock ya till your metal hunger's fed

Let's all join forces
Rule with iron hand
And prove to all the world
Metal rules the land
We're heavy duty
So come on let's tell the world

We are defenders of the faith

That was only about one half step above a Hagar lyric, for Hell's sake!!

Outside of the Ripper albums,

Ram it Down - unimaginative, over-produced and unmemorable...

Turbo would have been a close second.

But the ret of their catalogue is stella.

However, worst song is Loch Ness!!!

Shaun Ponsonby

Haven't really got a problem with Lochness. I think its been unfairly critisised. There's nothing wrong with a bit of experimentation. The lyrics are a bit stupid, but other than that, its OK.

Musically I think it's fine. The lyrics, especially the chorus, are what I can't take.

They make me want to laugh.

Hey, I Like "Heavy duty".

Besides, Halford`s lyrics are tongue in cheek while Hagar really means that kind of shit.

Great song.

Love the 'Defenders of the faith' singing at the end.

Didn't Priest release a live album with Ripper Owens?

I've never heard it, was it any good?

I hated the Linn drum drum machines on Ram It Down.

I thought "Blood Red Skies" was a masterpiece.

"Love You To Death" is cheezy, but I thought the stereo whip-crack was a real hoot!
:D

I was so desperate for new Priest material after the piece of shit that was Turbo that when I found out their cover of "Johnny Be Good" was going to be on the soundtrack for the lame high school football movie of the same name, I actually wasted 2 hours of my life I can never have back sitting through that sorry film, just to hear the song as the end credits rolled.

Turbo sucked motherfucking ass. The band I was in around 1986 eagerly awaited the release of this, so we could learn a song to perform live before any other band in town did.

We were appalled at the bullshit on there, though I do think "Out In The Cold" is a nice majestic piece of slow music.

We ended up learning "Locked In" because our singer could pull off a version not as lame as any other song on the album he could sing (he was a lame vocalist).

That album was a piece of shit.

The songs "Parental Guidance" and "Private Property" sucked fucking ass.

Fucking stoopid crap.

But then, Priest always were able to come up with some cheeze-whiz on their albums.

Demolition & Jugulator sucked ass in the songwriting department, as without Halford, their songs were lame.

However there were just enough passaable tunes on both albums that you could come up with a mediocre album...call it "Jugolition" or "Demulator".

I do think "Cathedral Spires" is the shining star of both of those albums. So they were not a total loss.....and I dig Tim Owen's voice.

My most recent disappointment though has nothing to do with songwriting quality.

I always believed that the drums on "Defenders Of The Faith" SUCKED FUCKING ASS!!!!

They sound like a wet cardboard box being kicked down a staircase!!

The snare is a muddy, half-hearted attempt to sound like the Mutt Lange-created Rick Allen snare drum sound of Prep Leppard's 80s releases.

And the drums are just so buried in the mix it is ridiculous.

Listen to the drums on "British Steel", and you can understand what my fave drum sound is on the Dave Holland Priest albums.

Fast forward to the past 5 years......when I heard that they were going to remaster and re-release the entire Priest catalogue, I was thrilled.

I got British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance, and straight away I could hear a vast improvement in sound quality.

So I eagerly awaited the release of "Defenders Of The Faith", as I figured they might have been able to actually make the drums sound better.

I was so wrong to have thought that.

Whereas the original drums sounded like a muddy cardboard box being kicked down a staircase, the remastered version's drums sounded like a really clean muddy and wet carboard box being kicked down a staircase (using cheep Radio Shack toy microphones no less).

I mean come ON!!!

DOTF had some of the most killer metal classics of the 80s!!! Freewheel Burning is the FUCKING SHIT!!!!!

But they had to ruin the goddamn fucking album by destroying the drums!

A truly great production on a metal album REQUIRES ABSOLUTELY that it be built on a foundation of solid drumwork, with a drum sound that is the very heartbeat and backbone of the song....yet Tom Allom failed miserably...enough so that a mere "remastering" failed to make them sound any better.

The only way to solve this problem is to REMIX the album, and that is never going to happen.

Tom Allom produced some classic albums with Priest, but DOTF is tarnished completely by a sludgy and almost non-existent drum mix.

I really dig Priest, which is why I created such a lengthy post on the subject.

binnie

I actaully never really got into DOTF - I do like it, but there are so many other Priest records I would crank out first.

You are right about "Blood Red Skies" as well, that it the savng grace Ram it Down.

Turbo just makes me cringe....

Those live albums are not bad, as long as they are playing the older better stuff.

It is well worth it to own live performances of Tim Owens....

I`ll tell you what, I`ve never been a fan of "You`ve got another thing comin`".

I know it was a kind of "breakthrough" hit but I find it really basic for Priest with a boring riff, no twin lead guitar work and very little of Halford`s trademark screaming.

In fact the album "Screaming for vengeance" is pretty patchy.

Don`t get me wrong "The Hellion/Electric eye", "Riding on the wind", the title track, "Fever" and "Devil`s child" are among the best songs they`ve ever recorded but the rest of it is bollocks.

It has nowhere near the creativity and innovation of their 70`s albums nor the depth of "British steel", "Defenders of the faith" or, dare I say it, "Point of entry".

And before anyone starts I don`t think there is anything as duff as "Chains" or "Pain and pleasure" on "Point of entry".

For me, their worst moments were probably Turbo (even though I like Locked In), and Jugulator, they were trying too much to sound BIG and OMINUS

The video to 'Hot Rockin' is either the worst thing anyone has ever done or so bad it achieves comedy greatness depending on how you look at it.

They weren't trying to be funny at the time...:)

In "Don`t go", Halford wears a leather cap and sports a moustache.

Well, if we're going to trash JPs videos, we have to give credit to them for one of the funniest moments in video history- You Got Another Thing Coming- when that guy has his head blow up when Rob screams "Coming- oh YEAH!!!!", and the fucking guy's pants fall to his ankles at the same time!!!! I die laughing at that everytime too!

which album is 'Parental Guidance' on?

I cant believe "Screaming for vengeance" is mentioned in this
thread. I would almost rate that their best album (that or British
Steel)

I listen to both those start to finish, love em both....

Defenders was great too..

Turbo was cheezy, sounded like they were showing off their
new guitar synth toy... But theres a couple of good songs on
there.

Same with Ram it Down...

"Heavy Metal" C'mon, that song kicks ass (maybe cheesy lyrics)
but the guitars are awesome....
I love when the second verse starts and the second guitar kicks
in.... Some choice solo work in that song too....

although I still after 25 years think Point of Entry is pretty weak,
I'm gonna go with Demolition. I liked Jugulator,Ripper actually wailed
on that one.

Demolition has got to be the worst Judas Priest album by far.

I know, but in Hot Rockin', he walks in on the rest of the band in some sort of shower-based gay miming orgy.

Although, he does LOOK gayest in "Don't Go". And he seems really upset when the others go through the door.

Turbo should be called Turdo. As the song says, "better run for cover."

And as for videos go, "Hot Rockin'" is a steaming pile of shit. Priest in the gym in their metal gear was pretty fucking ridiculous.

live '98 meltdown, which really fucking wails,
and live in london cd/dvd.cd was about 2 1/2 hours long, dvd was 90 minutes.
some songs were good, but overall it was really fucking weak and just like the demolition album, really fucking sucked major fucking shit balls. ripper butchered most of the classics, and the whole damn thing is really uninspired.

Well, I kinda liked "Locked In". It's catchy, and I like the riff. But the worst Priest album(s) for me would be Jugulator (trying to hard to be ominus) and Ram It Down, though I found their cover of Johnny B. Goode catchy
