A dozen Hanafi Muslim terrorists seize 134 hostages in three buildings only blocks from the White House. One man is killed and 12 are wounded in the takeover of the Islamic Center, the international headquarters of B'nai Brith, and the District building, Washington 's city hall. They surrender two days later after negotiations with ambassadors of Egypt , Iran , and Pakistan .

February 14

The U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan dies in hail of gunfire from Afghan troops as others plot to rescue him from four kidnappers in a Kabul hotel room. Just as U.S. officials believed they had persuaded Afghan Interior Ministry officials not to storm the room, a gunshot was heard, spurring the spray of bullets. 1



November 4

Islamic students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran , Iran , and took 66 American diplomats hostage. Thirteen were soon released, but over 50 remaining were held hostage. President Jimmy Carter applied economic pressure by halting Iranian oil imports and freezing Iranian assets in the United States . On April 24,1980, the Carter administration attempted a rescue mission that failed, when three of the mission's eight helicopters were damaged in a sandstorm. After Ronald Reagan's election in November, successful negotiations began, and Iran released the remaining hostages shortly after his inauguration on January 20, 1981. 1,2,9

Aukar, Lebanon: Islamic Jihad detonate a van full of explosives 30 feet in front of the U.S. Embassy annex severely damaging the building, killing two U.S. servicemen and seven Lebanese employees, as well as 5 to 15 non-employees. Twenty Americans were injured, including U.S. Ambassador Reginald Bartholomew and visiting British Ambassador David Miers. An estimated 40 to 50 Lebanese were hurt. The attack came in response to the U.S. veto September 6 of a U.N. Security Council resolution. 17

A bomb explodes in a restaurant popular with American servicemen in Madrid , Spain , killing 18, all Spaniards, and injuring 82, including 15 Americans. It is the worst act of terrorism in Spain since the end of the Spanish civil war in 1939. Various groups claim responsibility for the bombing in calls to news organizations, including the Basque separatist group, ETA, and Islamic Jihad. 10

A Lebanese Shiite gunman threatens Captain John Testrake, as he leans from the cockpit of hijacked TWA Flight 847.
Two Lebanese Shiite gunmen seize TWA flight 847 bound from Athens to Rome with 104 Americans and 49 other passengers and force it to Beirut , Lebanon , where they pick up more gunmen. From there, they fly to Algiers . The hijackers release passengers, until 39 hostages remain. They demand the release of 766 Lebanese prisoners being held in Israel . On the second day of the standoff, the plane returns to Beirut , and the hijackers kill U.S. Navy diver Robert Stethem, and throw his body out on the runway. Israel releases 31 Lebanese prisoners, but insists the release is not related to the standoff. After 17 days in captivity, the hostages are transported to Damascus , Syria , and released. 1, 2, 9, 18

The military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Jerusalem Squads, claimed responsibility for this suicide car bomb attack that was carried out to commemorate Israel's withdrawal.25



June 1

A Hamas suicide bomber blew himself up as he stood in line outside the Pasha disco near the Dolphinarium, a popular Tel Aviv club. The explosive device was reportedly a composed of a large number of metal objects, including balls and screws. 21 were killed and 120 injured in the blast.25




September 11


FBI agents, fire fighters, rescue workers and engineers work at the Pentagon crash site, where a hijacked American Airlines flight slammed into the building on September 11, 2001.

Hijacked planes, American Airlines Flight 11, and United Airlines Flight 175, both en route from Boston to Los Angeles crash into the World Trade Center towers in New York - destroying both, and killing more than 2,500 people in the buildings and on the ground. In Bali , a car bomb exploded outside the Sari Club Discotheque on Legian Street , a busy tourist area filled with nightclubs, cafes, and bars, killing at least 187 international tourists and injuring about 300 others. The resulting fire also destroyed the nearby Padi Club and Panin Bank and other buildings and cars. Al-Qaida claimed responsibility for this attack. 6

In Mombasa , Kenya , a vehicle containing three suicide bombers drove into the front of the Paradise Hotel and exploded, killing 15 persons including three Israelis and 12 Kenyans and wounding 40 others including 18 Israelis and 22 Kenyans. Al-Qaida, the Government of Universal Palestine in Exile, and the Army of Palestine claimed responsibility. Al-Ittihad al-Islami (AIAI) is probably linked to the attack. 6

In Mombasa , Kenya , two SA-7 Strela antiaircraft missiles were launched but missed downing a Arkia Boeing 757 taking off from Mombasa enroute to Israel . The aircraft carried 261 passengers and continued its flight. Al-Qaida, the Government of Universal Palestine in Exile, and the Army of Palestine claimed responsibility. AIAI is probably linked to the attack according to reports. 6

In Makassar , Indonesia , a bomb exploded in a McDonald's restaurant, killing three persons, injuring 11 others, and causing major damage to the restaurant. No one claimed responsibility though police are focusing on a hardline Islamic group, Laskar Jundullah. 6

Davao , Philippines , a bomb exploded on a crowded passenger wharf. There were 16 killed and 55 wounded, according to press reports. This attack is believed to have been carried out by two Indonesian members of Jemaah Islamiyah, a regional terrorist group with links to al-Qaida. 7

In one of the deadliest terror attacks on Americans since Sept. 11, suicide bombers shoot their way into three gated residential compounds for foreign workers in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and set off car bombs, resulting in 35 dead, including 10 Americans and 7 Saudis, and over 200 wounded. Kabul, Afghanistan, a taxi rigged with explosives rammed into a bus carrying German peace-keepers of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) heading to the airport for their return home. Car bomb explodes outside Marriott hotel in downtown Jakarta , Indonesia , during lunchtime rush hour, killing at least 10 and wounding nearly 150 - including two Americans. The adjoining office block was set on fire, with several cars burned in the hotel's front driveway, and windows in the hotel shattered to the height of 21 stories. The Al Qaida linked militant group Jemaah Islamiyah allegedly claims responsibility for the bombing, in remarks published by Singapore 's Straits Times. 2, 7

Baghdad , Iraq , a truck drove into the driveway of the Canal Hotel housing the headquarters of the United Nations, and exploded, killing 23 (including three U.S. citizens and the UN Secretary General's Special Representative in Iraq ) and wounding 100. 7

A suicide car bomber blew himself up near the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad killing himself and a security guard and wounding nineteen people. Sami Muhammad Ali Said Jaaf, a lieutenant of Abu Musab Zarqawi, admitted to being involved in over thirty-two bombings in Iraq, including this one. 25

A suicide bomber detonated a car packed with explosives outside the Baghdad Hotel housing Iraqi government leaders and US contractors. At least eight people, including the bomber, were killed and as many as forty others were wounded. The wounded included one member of Iraq's Governing Council and three Americans. Al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the attack. 25

A suicide car bombing killed at least seventeen people and injured more than 120 in Riyadh. US and Saudi officials sated that the attack closely resembled the Saudi bombings in May that were attributed to Al-Qaeda. In this latest attack, an explosives-laden car struck an upscale villa compound in western Riyadh inhabited by mainly Saudis and Arab nationals, however, the area was formerly home to many US contracters. The attack was claimed by al-Qa’ida. 25

Kandahar , Afghanistan , a vehicle bomb exploded outside office of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), killing one person, injuring one other, and causing major damage to the building, according to press reports. The Taliban or al-Qaida may have been responsible. 7

Al-Nasiriyah , Iraq , two vehicles approached the Italian Carabinieri Corps' MSU (Multinational Specialized Unit) command post. A white car with four persons inside preceded another, heavier vehicle carrying explosives. When the first vehicle passed in front of the Carabinieri base, diversionary shots were fired from the lead vehicle, while the second truck reached the target and exploded, resulting in the death of 19 Italians and 13 Iraqi civilians, according to media reports. At least 80 others were wounded in the attack. Abu-Muhammad Ablay later claimed responsibility for the al-Nasiriyah attack on behalf of al-Qaida in an email to the Saudi weekly al-Majallah. 7

Istanbul , Turkey , a vehicle bomb exploded at the Beth Israel synagogue, killing four and wounding 60, according to press reports. Turkish authorities believe the same group is also responsible for the other incidents on November 15 and 20 in Istanbul . 7

Abu Musab al Zarqawi, Jordanian born terrorist leader, responsible for the deaths of hundreds in Reconstructionist Iraq, after the downfall of Saddam Hussein’s regime.
Four people, including a child, were killed and at least twenty others were injured when unknown attackers threw a grenade at a stall on Bayaa Street in south Baghdad that was selling alcohol. This attack comes after threats were made by "Islamists" against stores selling alcohol during the holy month of Ramadan. 25

Kabul , Afghanistan , a rocket was fired at the Intercontinental Hotel, which was crowded with guests, including foreign diplomats, journalists, and UN aid workers. The attack caused no injuries and only minor damage, according to press reports. Though there was no claim of responsibility, authorities suspected remnants of Taliban and al-Qaida for the attack. 7

Attacks on government buildings and foreign troops' bases in the southern city of Kerbala using suicide car bombers, machine guns and mortars kill 19 and wound about 120. 15

Saudi Arabia: Khobar: A shooting rampage and hostage standoff in Saudi's oil industry hub killed 22 and injured 25, mostly foreigners. In the early morning, four militants stormed the oil industry office compounds spraying gunfire and killing thirteen people. They then moved up the street to Oasis Residential Resort. According to the Saudi Interior Ministry, the militants first tried to ram the gate with an explosives-rigged car but when that failed they scaled the wall. They then proceeded to sort out Muslims from non-Muslims and corralled at least fifty hostages in a hotel. Nine hostages were killed and forty-one rescued by Saudi commandos. Only one of the attackers was captured. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility. 25

The attack occurred Sunday as Christians gathered at the church in the city of Palu in Central Sulawesi province, near the town of Poso -- the site of bloody Muslim-Christian clashes that have killed some 2,000 people since 1999. 23
