According to Wikipedia, Heinrich Mueller, (b. April 29, 1900) Chief of the Gestapo and Adolf Eichmann's boss, "disappeared in May 1945 and remains the only senior figure of the Nazi regime who was never captured or confirmed to have died."

In fact, the Gestapo chief escaped to Switzerland where he worked for the government under an assumed name. In 1948, the CIA recruited him as a Soviet counter espionage specialist because the US government was rife with Communists. Frank Wisner and James Kronthal hired him for $50K annual salary and a $1 million signing bonus.

Mueller was soon on a first-name basis with President Harry S. Truman.. Wearing his Nazi medals, Mueller entertained Truman at home, played Bach, and gave him stolen art and a case of fine whiskey. Truman may be his son's godfather.

Mueller came to the US with his Gestapo helpers and soon had Washington bugged. He spied on his CIA superiors and informed Truman that they were tapping his phone. He advised Truman on Soviet intentions during the Korean War based on his contacts with Soviet spies in Washington, (including Kim Philby) and his experience as the Communists' Number One Nemesis.

He lived under a Swiss identity, had US army bodyguards and employed an assassin who immediately dispatched anyone who raised questions about Mueller's real identity. At least a half-dozen people met their end in this way.

Mueller's 200-page Journal covering the period March 1949 to Sept 1951 is for sale as a PDF file for $6.25 at www.tbrnews.org under the title "The CIA Covenant: Nazis in Washington" by Gregory Douglas. Some excerpts are on the site. http://www.tbrnews.org/Archives/a1186.htm%20

Obviously capable of great ruthlessness, (he boasts of literally flushing Hitler's would-be assassin down the toilet) Mueller emerges from these journals as surprisingly civilized, urbane and intelligent. An accomplished pianist and chess player, he enjoyed fine art and literature. He was extremely wealthy thanks to gold and art stolen during the war. One of his CIA functions was to fence their stolen art. His bosses kept the proceeds.

He says people like Alan Dulles, James Angleton and Frank Wisner embezzled millions from "top secret" projects. For example, they pocketed a million dollar bribe to depose the democratically elected Iranian Prime Minister Mossedagh. Mueller got a share.

A Catholic, Mueller had worked for the Bavarian State Police and prosecuted Nazis as well as Communists. When the Nazis came to power, they kept him on the job. He became fiercely loyal to Adolph Hitler and continued to celebrate the Fuehrer's birthday in Washington with many highly-placed Americans.

"I never was a practicing Nazi," he wrote April 9, 1949, " but we cannot discuss that because a number of my [CIA] superiors are secret sympathizers and that would not impress them at all. I am now a true Party member and fighter against Communism."

Mueller regarded Washington as a cross between a zoo and an insane asylum. He had contempt for his CIA colleagues whom he cuckolded regularly. Many were gay and, in spite of being racist, had Black lovers. The wives were also a rich source of information.

The CIA is filled with" pseudo-intellectuals, drunks and egomaniacs" that have no idea at all what they are doing, he wrote. "[Alan] Dulles is one of those well-bred idiots who went to the correct schools and met the right people. If it weren't for that, he would be scrubbing toilets in the YMCA in some small town in New Jersey."

The CIA were trying to set national policy and would be responsible for the Beacon of Democracy sliding into Fascism, which he admitted was preferable to Communism. (Actually they both represent occult plutocratic totalitarian control. The CIA probably masterminded the JFK assassination and was involved in 9-11.)

Mueller's admiration is reserved for Harry Truman, whom he considered an honest unpretentious man, and bulwark against Communism. Communists took over the US government under FDR. If he had succeeded in putting Henry Wallace on the ticket, " there is no doubt that the red flag would be flying over the "People's Republic of North America" at this moment." (June 14, 1950)

Mueller doesn't seem to appreciate that the Communist-Fascist split reflects two branches of Freemasonry divided into house teams for the sake of war. Like FDR, Truman was a top ranking Freemason. The Illuminati Council had decided on a Cold War and obviously could not have a Communist (Wallace) in charge in America.

Nazis were recruited because the US team had too many Communists/ "internationalists." Mueller and the CIA apparently was behind Sen. Joseph McCarthy's campaign against Communists in US government with the tacit support of Truman although Mueller regarded McCarthy as a grandstander, drunk and "fairy."

The "Cold War" was a continuation of WWII, with the US replacing the Nazis on the "anti-Communist" side. The "War on Terror" replaces the Cold War with "Islamo Fascism" facing off against "Zionism." Since the elite discovered in 1938 that the American public will believe that Mars is invading, they have been inventing new wars.

I do not know if the Illuminati also controls Iran and Russia/China, but naturally I'd like to think they represent real resistance to the NWO agenda.

THE HOLOCAUST

Mueller's Journal is extremely credible which is why his comments on the Jewish holocaust are very provocative.

Remember this Journal supposedly was not intended to become public. On July 9, 1949 he wrote:

"The Americans ought to set up some sort of detention camp system and put people like [Alger] Hiss and others into protective custody. I had some idiot tell me yesterday that all of our camps were filled with Jews who we gassed by the millions and then turned into lampshades, ladies gloves and hand soap! I have no idea where they get such shit but I imagine the American press makes it up for political reasons. The camps were never designed for Jews and we did not gas millions of them or make soap out of their remains. The camps were mostly for professional criminals and communists. About 75% of all camp inmates at any one given time were political prisoners and the rest divided up between criminals, spies and Jews. The worst error Himmler ever made was to put Russian prisoners into the camps because this brought typhus that killed off thousands of prisoners. The pictures often shown here of stacks of emaciated corpses are not pictures of dead Jews but pictures of typhus victims. And gas chambers at Dachau with sixty thousand gassed Jews there! I have visited Dachau on several occasions and no one was ever gassed there. Pictures of ovens with titles that "in these ovens, tens of thousands of murdered Jews were cremated" is more nonsense. All prisoners who died in jail were cremated and their ashes sent home. And especially with the typhus epidemics raging everywhere. Well, I can say nothing about it so on to other matters."

According to R. Wistrich, (/Who's Who in Nazi Germany/) Mueller had a central role in the extermination of European Jewry. "He signed the circulating order requiring the immediate delivery to Auschwitz by 31 January 1943 of 45,000 Jews for extermination and countless other documents of the same tenor, which reveal his zeal in carrying out orders. In the summer of 1943 he was sent to Rome to pressurize the Italians, who were proving singularly inefficient and unenthusiastic in arresting Jews. ...In his hands, mass murder became an automatic administrative procedure."(p.174)

In his Interrogation, Mueller claimed: "You want to know what my role in these camps was. Let me be very brief about that. I put people into such camps for criminal or political offenses. I did not have anything whatsoever to do with the running of these camps nor their policies." He also claimed that he has a clear recollection that only a half million died in the camps, many of typhus and not all Jews.

Before becoming Gestapo Chief, Mueller was briefly in charge of arranging Jewish emigration. In 1939 he personally organized the famous steamship "St. Louis" effort to settle 900 well-to-do German Jews in Cuba. FDR felt they were too close to America and blocked it, evidence that FDR represented a power that was not strictly speaking "Jewish."

CONCLUSION

Mueller felt that Hitler's use of anti-Semitism to unite the German people backfired against Germany. He recognized that many Communists were Jews but many Jews were not. "I do not hate Jews... and have better things to do than persecute them." He claimed that more than half of Berlin Jews were still there at war's end.

He was surprised to find more anti-Semitism in the top ranks of the US military and CIA than in similar positions in Nazi Germany. The CIA took over the "rat lines" to Syria and South America. They sent Nazis to bolster the Syrians against the Israelis. The Illuminati built up both sides to foment conflict.

There is much else of interest in this book but I only have space to tantalize you. Mueller says the Israelis wanted to attack Saudi Arabia in 1949 and Truman had to threaten military action to stop them. The Stern Gang tried to assassinate Truman but the team was apprehended and killed. Roosevelt had Huey Long killed and "made a deal with the Pope" to shut down Father Coughlin. The British wanted the US and Russia to destroy each other. Mueller suggests that Hitler escaped to Spain after the war and UFOs (flying saucers) are indeed extraterrestrial.

The Journal is gossipy and personal and extremely entertaining. There is no question in my mind of its authenticity but I am not omniscient. Mueller, who had in excess of $50 million, married a rich young socialite who bore him a son. The diary ends before Eisenhower took power so we don't know if Mueller retired. He had estates in Virginia and Colorado and died in 1983 in California.

The Journal is an incomparable insight into a fascinating period. Clearly history is a charade manufactured by an immoral international clique to control and exploit humanity. Like Mafia families, they have real rivalries, contain both powerful Zionist and anti-Semitic elements, but ultimately have the same goal, world dictatorship. This lesson is particularly relevant today when they are trying to fabricate a "Clash of Civilizations" i.e. a Third World War. -----

All of this is based entirely on books by a guy called Gregory Douglas who is a hoaxer and forger.

Can we move on now please...?

Not Quite the Hitler Diaries

Gestapo Chief: The 1948 Interrogation of Heinrich Müller by Gregory Douglas. San Jose, CA: R. James Bender, 1995. Hardcover. 283 pages. $35.95. Bibliography, index, illustrations.

Mark Weber

Gestapo Chief, more than seventy thousand copies of which have reportedly been sold, is the product of an inventive mind and much hard work. It purports to present long-suppressed secret documents with startling revelations about Third Reich Germany, Hitler, Roosevelt, Churchill, and the Second World War.

This book, and three others in the Gestapo Chief series, are based primarily on what the author claims are detailed revelations from Heinrich Müller, the Bavarian-born policeman who, from 1939 until 1945, was chief of the Gestapo, the Third Reich's "Secret State Police" (Geheime Staatspolizei), a branch of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA). He was the immediate boss, for example, of Adolf Eichmann, who headed the RSHA bureau that oversaw Germany's wartime Jewish deportation program. Müller reported to RSHA chief Reinhard Heydrich (until his assassination in Prague in 1942), and then, until the end of the war, to Ernst Kaltenbrunner.

Just what happened to "Gestapo" Müller has never been satisfactorily established. He was last seen in Berlin in April 1945, vanishing in the chaos and turmoil of the great battle for the German capital shortly before the end of the war in Europe. His corpse has never been found. For decades rumors persisted that he escaped to South America, or that he worked for Soviet or American intelligence.

Half a century after the end of the war, an elusive American who sometimes calls himself "Gregory Douglas" emerged to present in Gestapo Chief what he claims is proof that in 1945 Müller escaped to Switzerland, where he was recruited by American intelligence. From December 1948 until 1952, "Douglas" contends, Müller lived in the Washington, DC, area, where he worked for U.S. military intelligence in the Truman administration, rising to the rank of U.S. Army brigadier general. According to "Douglas," the former Gestapo commandant participated in high-level White House security conferences, and even met President Truman.

"Douglas" lays out this amazing story, with ever more tantalizing revelations from Müller, in four Gestapo Chief volumes issued by R. James Bender, a northern California publisher that specializes in militaria, especially of Third Reich Germany. In addition, the first volume in this series was published in Germany under the title Geheimakte Gestapo-Müller. Three of the four volumes are supposedly based on conversations between Müller in 1948 in Switzerland and an American intelligence agent named James Kronthal; the fourth is purportedly based on a private diary he kept while living in the United States.

In addition, this first volume contains extensive excerpts of what are claimed to be German intercepts of secret wartime trans-Atlantic telephone conversations between Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. In a purported conversation on November 26, 1941, President Roosevelt tells Churchill that a Japanese strike force is preparing to attack the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on the weekend of December 7-8, 1941. This "smoking gun" document seemingly proves that the American president knew in advance of the impending Japanese attack, and failed to give adequate warning to Pearl Harbor's defenders.

Perhaps this book's most sensational "revelation" is that Hitler did not commit suicide on April 30, 1945, as those who were with him in the final days of the war later unanimously testified, but instead escaped to Spain. Müller insists that, with his help, Hitler and his mistress, Eva Braun, left Berlin on April 22, 1945, and flew from Austria on the 26th in a special four-motor aircraft that arrived the next day in Barcelona. "Listen to me," Müller tells his American interrogator. "Hitler went to Spain. I know for certain his plane landed safely ..."

To confirm this testimony, the author presents what appears to be a facsimile reproduction of an authentic German document dated April 20, 1945. Headed "Special Führer journey to Barcelona," and signed by Müller, it declares that "the Führer and his entourage will depart from airfield Hörching [near Linz] on April 26, 1945."

Müller says that, as part of the escape operation, he found a man who looked like Hitler to serve as a "double." Thus, Müller says, Hitler's wedding to Eva Braun in the Berlin bunker on April 28 or 29, 1945, was "pure theater." Afterwards, Müller goes on, the "double" was shot and his body left so that the Russians would find it, to mislead them into believing they had discovered the Führer's corpse.

My view that the Gestapo Chief series is an elaborate hoax is based not only on an examination of the books themselves, but on lengthy telephone conversations with the author. From these talks, I can attest that "Gregory Douglas" is intelligent, loquacious, knowledgeable, and literate, but also amoral, evasive, and vindictive. Those who have spoken at any length with him are struck by his chronic cynicism -- a trait that, interestingly enough, is reflected in the words he attributes to Müller throughout the Gestapo Chief series.

The man who crafted this series of books is a known fabricator of documents who has used a variety of names over the years, including Peter Stahl, Samuel Prescot Bush, and Freiherr Von Mollendorf. His real name, apparently, is Peter Norton Birch or Peter Norwood Burch.

His son, with whom I have also spoken, sometimes fronts for his father as the author of the Gestapo Chief books. For more than a year the son has been living and working in Rockford, Illinois, under the name Gregory Douglas Alford. He is also a former staff writer for the Sun-Star newspaper of Merced, California, and the Journal-Standard of Freeport, Illinois. Apparently he has sometimes used the name Gregg Stahl.

David Irving, who is probably more familiar with wartime German documents than any other living historian, dismisses Gestapo Chief as "a carefully crafted historical novel." Some years ago, Irving says, "Peter Stahl" tried to sell him forged documents. Another British historian, John Costello (author of Ten Days to Destiny and other works), whom I knew rather well until his death in August 1995, told me that Douglas/Stahl similarly tried to sell him wartime documents of dubious authenticity.

Perhaps the most obviously suspect feature of the Gestapo Chief series is that the author will not permit any independent examination of his "original" documents. (To be sure, not all the documents he presents are fraudulent. To add credibility to his book, "Douglas" includes, among his forgeries, a number of indisputably authentic wartime documents.)

During one telephone conversation, "Douglas" told me with some pride that his book would soon be coming out in German, and that the 1948 Müller interrogations were being translated into German. But how, I asked, was that possible, given that (as Gestapo Chief readers are told) these interrogations took place in German and the "original" transcripts are already in German. The normally suave and loquacious "Douglas" was at a loss for words.:D :D :D :D OWNED!

Characteristic of this entire series is the clearly fraudulent "facsimile document" of April 20, 1945, presented on page 275 of Gestapo Chief. This is actually the author's second, "corrected" version. The first appeared with an article he wrote for the spring 1990 issue of The Military Advisor, a magazine issued by the same firm that publishes Gestapo Chief. But whereas the "SS" characters are rendered in this earlier "facsimile" as normal typescript letters, they are rendered in Gestapo Chief as "lightning bolt" runes.

How did these amazing documents come into the author's possession? In Gestapo Chief, the first volume of the series, "Douglas" tells the reader that "In the early 1980s, by means that are not of concern here, all of Müller's personal files came into private hands." Later "Douglas" claimed that Müller personally gave him these extraordinary documents (Spotlight, Jan. 6, 1997). In another Spotlight interview (Nov. 9, 1998), "Douglas" claimed to have met Müller in 1963, and to have known him well until his death in 1983. Remarkably, no mention of this twenty-year relationship appears in volume one of Gestapo Chief.

To credit Douglas' fantastic yarns requires one to accept that Hitler's personal and political testaments of April 29, 1945, are phony, and that all those who were with him in the final days in the Berlin bunker, and who survived the war, conspired for decades in a lie to hide the German leader's escape to Spain. These persons include Hans Baur, Hitler' pilot; Traudl Junge, the secretary who typed Hitler's final testament; the pilot Hanna Reitsch; Otto Günsche, Hitler's personal adjutant, who carried the body of Eva Braun from the bunker up to the courtyard where it was burned; Erich Kempka, the chauffeur who helped burn the bodies of Hitler and his wife; Heinz Linge, Hitler's valet; and Artur Axmann, the Hitler Youth leader (Linge and Axmann later testified to having seen Hitler's corpse). Some of these witnesses were questioned by British historians Hugh Trevor-Roper and David Irving; others, during Soviet captivity, by the Russians. Their stories tally.

Finally, it is utterly implausible to believe that Hitler would have vanished without trace after arriving in Spain, and that not a single one of the many persons who would have noticed his arrival there has ever spoken of it.

How has "Douglas" gotten away with his fraud? One important factor has been the unwavering support he's received for years from Willis Carto. In spite of repeated warnings that "Douglas" is a liar and that his Gestapo Chief books are frauds, Carto has steadfastly promoted "Douglas" and his books in two periodicals he controls: The Spotlight, the weekly Liberty Lobby tabloid, and The Barnes Review, a bi-monthly history magazine.

For years Carto has promoted and offered for sale the Gestapo Chief series through the Barnes Review book club. He has arranged for publication of numerous articles by and interviews with "Gregory Douglas." Typical is a Spotlight interview (Jan. 5-12, 1998) headlined "Establishment Can't Keep Lid on Blockbuster Gestapo Books." Another uncritical interview with "Douglas" appeared in the April 1997 Barnes Review. A few months later, the November 1997 issue of The Barnes Review featured a laudatory review of the second Gestapo Chief volume. Written by veteran Spotlight staff writer Fred Blahut, it assures readers that "Douglas proves, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Muller did, indeed, survive [the war] and was, in fact, interrogated by the CIA. Following these extensive sessions, he was employed and moved to Washington ... He was a key player in the Cold War ... Douglas presents the facts and lets the chips fall where they may."

Gestapo Chief is a fraud nearly as audacious as the notorious "Hitler Diaries" hoax of 1983. For those who care about accurate and honest historiography, the case of Gestapo Chief is an instructive one.

Indeed, see my last post.

You need to be more careful in believing the bullshit on these conspiracy websites. They just make up reams of crap and then all quote each other and it sells books.

If any of this had a vague chance of even being slightly true the news media would have been all over it.

The guy managed to sell 70 000 books on the strength of total bullshit.

It seems to happen more and more these days.

Oh so there were never any Nazis imported into the United States to work for the U.S. Intelligence agencies after WWII?

I never said I believed this crackpot author did I?

However, it IS historical FACT that MANY former Nazis were brought to the US to work for the US Intelligence services after the war.

Therefore, despite the author's reputation as a fraud, such a story is not as far-fetched as the historical review goobers would have people believe.

All one has to do is read through the many pages on the internet devoted to Operation Paperclip to see how the U.S. Government is actually a rather fascist (and becoming moreso as time goes on) organization. And Operation Paperclip is just the tip of the iceberg.

Here is what Hermann Goering had to say about governmental inlfuence on it's population when he was in Nuremberg for his trial on War Crimes in WWII:

"Why, of course the people don't want war ... but, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament or a communist dictatorship ... voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger."

Here...this is from a webpage at the site of the National Archives dated May of 2004:

"After World War II, the emerging struggle with the Soviet Union dominated the resources and attention of the United States, even at the expense of the task of locating and punishing the perpetrators of the Holocaust. The May 1960 Israeli capture of notorious Nazi Adolf Eichmann, however, refocused public attention on those men who had managed to elude justice in the chaos of the immediate postwar period. For the CIA, this unexpected event would force a re-examination of some of the former Nazis it had recruited in the rush to produce intelligence results during the Cold War in the 1950s. Newly released records show that at least five of Eichmann’s associates, each a significant participant in Hitler’s war upon the Jews, had worked for the CIA. Additionally, the records reveal that at least 23 war criminals or Nazis were approached by the CIA for recruitment. The documents help answer the question of how and why these war criminals were given employment, assistance, and, in two cases, U.S. citizenship by a nation that had lost more than 300,000 lives in World War II.

In early 1950, the Austrian police began asking questions about Otto von Bolschwing, a former SS officer hired by the CIA in late 1949. Bolschwing’s SS personnel file had been among those captured at the end of the war. To protect this agent from any war crimes trial, however, the CIA decided that any prosecutors who asked for Bolschwing’s SS personnel file should be told, "no files available." Bolschwing had worked with Eichmann before the war in planning the expropriation of Jewish property in Austria and later served as the SS consultant to the forces that staged the bloody pogrom in Bucharest, Romania in 1941. In 1953, in recognition of Bolschwing’s work for U.S. intelligence, the CIA pressured the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service to let him enter the country. He later became a U.S. citizen. When U.S. Congress in the 1970s forced an examination of U.S. policy toward Nazi war criminals—creating at the time the Office of Special Investigations in the Department of Justice—Boschwing was investigated and then stripped of his citizenship. OSI found Bolschwing on its own. The CIA never turned him in to law enforcement. He died in 1982."

CIA Ties With Ex-Nazis Shown
Anti-Communist Effort Is Detailed In Agency Records

By Christopher Lee
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, June 7, 2006; A21

The CIA organized Cold War spy networks that included former Nazis and failed to act on a 1958 report that fugitive Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann was living in Argentina, newly released CIA records show.

The records were among 27,000 pages of documents made public yesterday at the National Archives. They shed new light on the secret protection and support given to former Nazi officials and Nazi collaborators by U.S. intelligence agencies as fighting communism became the central aim of American foreign policy in the years after World War II.

"It was not U.S. policy to track Nazi war criminals once the Cold War began," said historian Timothy Naftali of the University of Virginia, a Cold War expert who has studied the new documents.

"The CIA based its decisions about using former SS men or unreconstructed Nazis solely on operational considerations. . . . Hiring these tainted individuals brought little other than operational problems and moral confusion to our government's intelligence community," he added.

The subject of postwar collaboration between U.S. intelligence and former Nazis that the government sought to use in the struggle against the Soviet Union has been documented, but historians said the previously inaccessible documents have enabled them to fill in many blanks in the historical narrative.

About 60,000 pages of CIA records had already been released since 1999, after a 1998 federal law opened up secret government files relating to war crimes by the German and Japanese governments during World War II.

Historians reviewing the records for the government published a 2004 book, "U.S. Intelligence and the Nazis," based on 240,000 pages of FBI records, 419 CIA files and 3,000 pages of U.S. Army information. It detailed the Army's postwar relationship with former officers of the German Wehrmacht's intelligence service, which are available at the National Archives.

The materials released yesterday include operational documents detailing the activities of the CIA and its contacts abroad, historians and other officials said during a news conference at the National Archives.

"It's a rare release of operational files," said Allen Weinstein, head of the National Archives and chairman of the interagency working group overseeing the declassification of records about World War II crimes and criminals. "The files are also more inclusive than any other CIA files made public before. . . . This time, the documents are nearly all without redactions, providing researchers and historians the clearest view yet of the postwar intelligence world."

The release of the records stalled last year with the deadline for the interagency project approaching when the CIA balked at declassifying more detailed documents about the agency's postwar ties to Nazis. But the CIA caved in under pressure from Sen. Mike DeWine (R-Ohio), an author of the original legislation, and other prominent backers of that law. Congress passed a new law extending the life of the interagency panel by two years, to early 2007.

Some of the newly released documents show that between 1949 and 1955, the CIA organized "stay-behind" networks of German agents to provide intelligence from behind enemy lines, should the Soviet Union invade western Germany.

One network included at least two former Nazi SS members -- Staff Sgt. Heinrich Hoffman and Lt. Col. Hans Rues -- and one was run by Lt. Col. Walter Kopp, a former German army officer referred to by the CIA as an "unreconstructed Nazi." The network was disbanded in 1953 amid political concerns that some members' neo-Nazi sympathies would be exposed in the West German press.

In a March 1958 memo to the CIA, the West German foreign intelligence services (BND) wrote that Eichmann, a top Gestapo official who helped orchestrate the mass murder of Jews, "is reported to have lived in Argentina under the alias CLEMENS since 1952." The memo also mentioned a rumor that Eichmann lived in Jerusalem.

In fact, Eichmann was in Argentina and was using the name Ricardo Klement -- but apparently neither the CIA nor the West Germans acted on the information, Naftali said.

"Tragically, at the moment the CIA and the BND had this information the Israelis were temporarily giving up their search for Eichmann in Argentina because they could not figure out his alias," Naftali wrote in an analysis of the documents.

Eventually, Israeli Mossad agents abducted Eichmann in Buenos Aires on May 11, 1960. He was tried in Jerusalem, sentenced to death and hanged on May 31, 1962.

Robert Wolfe, a former federal archivist and an expert on captured German records, said the new CIA documents illustrate the "sorry results" of recruiting former Nazi intelligence personnel to U.S. efforts to keep the Soviet Union in check.

"The alleged intelligence those recruits peddled was mostly hearsay and gossip designed to tell their American interrogators what they wanted to hear, in the hope of escaping retribution for past crimes, or for mercenary gain, or for political agendas not necessarily compatible with American national interests," Wolfe said.

And one more item from the National Security Archives:

http://www.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB146/

Washington D.C., February 4, 2005 - Today the National Security Archive posted the CIA's secret documentary history of the U.S government's relationship with General Reinhard Gehlen, the German army's intelligence chief for the Eastern Front during World War II. At the end of the war, Gehlen established a close relationship with the U.S. and successfully maintained his intelligence network (it ultimately became the West German BND) even though he employed numerous former Nazis and known war criminals. The use of Gehlen's group, according to the CIA history, Forging an Intelligence Partnership: CIA and the Origins of the BND, 1945-49, was a "double edged sword" that "boosted the Warsaw Pact's propaganda efforts" and "suffered devastating penetrations by the KGB." [See Volume 1: Introduction, p. xxix]

The declassified "SECRET RelGER" two-volume history was compiled by CIA historian Kevin Ruffner and presented in 1999 by CIA Deputy Director for Operations Jack Downing to the German intelligence service (Bundesnachrichtendienst) in remembrance of "the new and close ties" formed during post-war Germany to mark the fiftieth year of CIA-West German cooperation. This history was declassified in 2002 as a result of the work of The Nazi War Crimes and Japanese Imperial Government Records Interagency Working Group (IWG) and contains 97 key documents from various agencies.

This posting comes in the wake of public grievances lodged by members of the IWG that the CIA has not fully complied with the mandate of the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act and is continuing to withhold hundreds of thousands of pages of documentation related to their work. (Note 1) In interviews with the New York Times, three public members of the IWG said:

* "I think that the CIA has defied the law, and in so doing has also trivialized the Holocaust, thumbed its nose at the survivors of the Holocaust and also at the Americans who gave their lives in the effort to defeat the Nazis in World War II." - Former congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman

* "I can only say that the posture the CIA has taken differs from all the other agencies that have been involved, and that's not a position we can accept." - Washington lawyer Richard Ben-Veniste

* "Too much has been secret for too long. The CIA has not complied with the statute." - Former federal prosecutor Thomas H. Baer

The IWG was established in January 11, 1999 and has overseen the declassification of about eight million pages of documents from multiple government agencies. Its mandate expires at the end of March 2005.

The documentation unearthed by the IWG reveals extensive relationships between former Nazi war criminals and American intelligence organizations, including the CIA. For example, current records show that at least five associates of the notorious Nazi Adolf Eichmann worked for the CIA, 23 other Nazis were approached by the CIA for recruitment, and at least 100 officers within the Gehlen organization were former SD or Gestapo officers. (Note 2)

The IWG enlisted the help of key academic scholars to consult during the declassification process, and these historians released their own interpretation of the declassified material last May (2004) in a publication called US Intelligence and the Nazis. The introduction to this book emphasizes the dilemma of using former Nazis as assets:

"The notion that they [CIA, Army Counterintelligence Corp, Gehlen organization] employed only a few bad apples will not stand up to the new documentation. Some American intelligence officials could not or did not want to see how many German intelligence officials, SS officers, police, or non-German collaborators with the Nazis were compromised or incriminated by their past service… Hindsight allows us to see that American use of actual or alleged war criminals was a blunder in several respects…there was no compelling reason to begin the postwar era with the assistance of some of those associated with the worst crimes of the war. Lack of sufficient attention to history-and, on a personal level, to character and morality-established a bad precedent, especially for new intelligence agencies. It also brought into intelligence organizations men and women previously incapable of distinguishing between their political/ideological beliefs and reality. As a result, such individuals could not and did not deliver good intelligence. Finally, because their new, professed 'democratic convictions' were at best insecure and their pasts could be used against them (some could be blackmailed), these recruits represented a potential security problem." (Note 3)

The Gehlen organization profiled in the newly posted CIA history represents one of the most telling examples of these pitfalls. Timothy Naftali, a University of Virginia professor and consulting historian to the IWG who focused heavily on the declassified CIA material, highlighted the problems posed by our relationship with Gehlen: "Reinhard Gehlen was able to use U.S. funds to create a large intelligence bureaucracy that not only undermined the Western critique of the Soviet Union by protecting and promoting war criminals but also was arguably the least effective and secure in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. As many in U.S. intelligence in the late 1940s had feared would happen, the Gehlen Organization proved to be the back door by which the Soviets penetrated the Western alliance." (Note 4)

The documents annexed in the CIA history posted today by the Archive echo the observations of Professor Naftali. While placing much of the blame on the Army Counterintelligence Corps' initial approach to Gehlen, this history emphasizes the CIA's own reluctance to adopt responsibility for Gehlen's organization, yet the documents show the CIA ultimately embracing Gehlen.

Some of the highlights from this secret CIA documentary history include:

* A May 1, 1952 report detailing how Gehlen and his network were initially approached by U.S. army intelligence. (Document 6)

* Two evaluations of the Gehlen operation from October 16 and 17, 1946, advising against the transfer of Gehlen's organization to CIG hands and questioning the value of the operation as a whole. (Documents 21 and 22)

* A March 19, 1948 memorandum from Richard Helms, noting Army pressure for the CIA to assume sponsorship of the Gehlen organization, and continued concern over the security problems inherent in the operation. (Document 59)

* A December 17, 1948 report outlining the problems with the Gehlen organization, but ultimately recommending CIA assumption of the project. (Document 72)

In answer to the question "Can we learn from history?", the IWG's consulting historians noted "The real question is not whether we will make use of our past to deal with the present, but rather how well we will do so. To do it well, we need these documents." (Note 5)

"This secret CIA history is full of documents we never would have seen under the Freedom of Information Act, because Congress in 1984 gave the CIA an exemption for its 'operational' files, on the grounds that such files were too sensitive ever to be released," commented Thomas Blanton, director of the National Security Archive. "The Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act has proven this assumption false. Release of these files has done no damage to national security, has provided information of enormous public interest and historical importance, and however belatedly, has brought a measure of accountability to government operations at variance with mainstream American values."

However, it IS historical FACT that MANY former Nazis were brought to the US to work for the US Intelligence services after the war.

Yes there were, but there is a big difference between the CIA/FBI/Army's use for them, and some stream-of-consciousness conspiratorial secret society gobily-gook this article is.

I really think there are better sources...

I wouldn't have gone to the trouble to check this one, just that I was bored and also that it was being then used to support holocaust denial which irritates me.

Sure a bunch of Nazi's were grabbed and used by all the allied governments after the war but they were not of the rank that this guy.

The British approach from stuff I've read seems to be if they were useful then they would use the pretty bad Nazis rather than the really bad ones...:)

Of course if you were a rocket scientist Russia,US and the UK wouldn't have cared if you goose stepped about the lab all day, they would take any they could find.

There is a real dodgy morals ethical thing about the whole practice but you could argue it worked really well using these scum unlike in Iraq where the US insisted on a clean sweep leading to years of anarchy and civil war.

Actually, the US used the scum in Iraq until it no longer suited our purposes.

Hey Sesh I am glad you did check up on it. I did not, but in this case should have.

But just as I stated above, with all the other skullduggery the US Intel services have been involved in in the 20th century, it does seem entirely possible.
