Now that the doctors have ordered me to stop drinking (doesn't go too well with the epilepsy meds I take, my blood/liver results had tripled since last February thanks to the meds and the wild summer), I still would like to think about all the best booze around the world...

Feel free to talk about drinks/mixes too, but especially all the best LIQUOR...

Anyone fan of ABSINTH?

Gee! The one from Pontarlier (Doubs/Jura , France)... :)
I know that area by heart, really. It's right at the east of France, along the Swiss border (it's about 300 km north from where I live). It's a very nice area, and Pontarlier is a small fortified city, the "biggest" around. Nothing much to do there, safe beating the mountains, meet amazing villagers and bang their pretty daughters. :D

But as far as absinthe, one of my friend brought some back from the Czech Republic last year and again this summer, and it's said to still be the same that was forbidden decades and decades ago, the one that Baudelaire drank like mad, for example. It was said that it drove drinkers mad, but it rather was the laudanum that you added that did. It's got an aniséed taste, which I personally can't stand, you know, like "Pastis" (from Marseille ) or "Ricard". Either the inoffensive one from Pontarlier or the Czech one have that aniseed flavor.

The area around Pontarlier has the reputation to be "the land of Kirsch", the cherry liquor. Every old villager has his ancestral wooden barrels with the cherries soaking, and on the mountain sides, in the valleys, in the gardens, everywhere it's covered with cherry trees.
They also do "Guignolet Kirsch", which is soft (15 or 16%). Girls like Guignolet in particular. Maybe they think that will give you ideas, just as if they had to help you have ideas... :D

Generally speaking, beyond wine, France is also the land of liquors. OK, there's Cognac (grapes liquor), Cointreau (orange liquor) Grand Margnier (orange liquor + Cognac), Armagnac (wine spirit), Benedictine, Calvados (from cider distllation), Chartreuse, and generally speaking, "white" alcohols from all the fruit you can find in France, and there are many, made all over the country, a fair part being home-made... But...*
*Let's not forget that part of the West Indies are part of France, like Martinique, Guadeloupe. Reunion Island, in the Indian Ocean, is French too. So, you can say that RUM is French too! :)

Yes, BUT... I'll promote my original region, the North of France here...
I know there's a Dutch alcohol that's called genever, which already makes gin a little dull insipid.
In the North of France, not far from Lille (the biggest city "up" there), they produce GENIEVRE. There are several sorts, but I firmly recommend the one from LOOS (I used to be a teacher there when I started my career :o), and then, the absolute best, the one from HOULLE, that makes every gin drinker a fag. :D

As far as I'm concerned, "white" (fruit) liquors will always make it best, but there are very few liquors in general that I don't like.

Though I dig whisky a damn lot myself, I can't resist to quote my fave humorist here, Pierre Desproges, who wrote in his "Unnecessary Dictionary": "Whisky is the cunt's Cognac". :D

Top-shelf corn liquor. The term "moonshine" covers alot of scortched territory, but if you have access to good-to-grate corn liquor? You'll be happy...extremely happy. No hangover....if there's a rope swing over a body of water nearby, that's fucking Nirvana!!

Yup!

As a matter of fact, the meds are not totally dangerous with alcohol, but the use of alcohol increases the possibility of a attack and that's very dangerous if I'm driving a car...

Gotta find some proper ganja then :D

I took only small amounts last winter, and only drank beer and cider, but this summer, the festivals etc. made me have vodka and the amounts increased too...but I'll survive! I can make bad jokes when I'm sober too...ahahahah

My posts are a living proof

EDIT: Oh yeah, last winter, when someone was offering me vodka with orange juice, I turned the offer down saying: "Sorry, I can't, I'm allergic to orange juice"

Absinthe never did much for me. Maybe it's because all of the experinces I've had on it have been really, really regretable.....

Sends me completley mad!!

Careful with the Ganja, I found my meds dont react well with it
at all. :(
Which sucks, cos I love being stoned !!

Alcohol surprisingly enough seems to be ok, unless I get
totally plastered on spirits, then its really bad ...

The one thing I dont miss about bingeing on spirits are
the hangovers. Beer hangovers are annoying, but manageable..
Spirit hangovers get all religous ("Please God, let me live and
I'll never drink again !! ) lol..

Hahahah...I usually lie on the floor or the grassfield of a park and make funny sounds when I have a hangover...ahahah

Panamark
08-24-2006, 02:21 AM
hahaha, well that wouldnt work for me..

I used to have a friend that would hang on
to chunks of grass, when drunk, coz he thought
he would fall off the earth... What is it with
alcohol and grassy fields ??

Ok, Im going to impart some wisdom (DRUM ROLL)
(WARNING WARNING)

Hangover Cure (That actually works)

My advise, some good tranquilizers (Valium is fine, just
enough to make you sleep) actually any benzo is good..
as much water as you can drink (after taking the valium)
2 x codeine tablets
2 x Vitamin B tablets..

Sleep when the benzo's kick in....

The suffering is much less painless when
you are sedated and asleep...

Ive had the hangovers from hell, used the above method,
then woke up feeling crappy, but only as 1/4 crappy
as I had felt before.. Manageable crapness....

I usually then eat a big meal, wait for that to
digest, then start drinkin again :D

(Man I hope kids arent reading this shit !)

The trick is to get a lot of fluid and vitamin b
back into your system. However it sucks sitting
around for 6-8 hours waiting for that to work..
Prolonged torture !! Best to sleep through that
phase..

Actually, drinking a shitload of water before crashing
out (whilst still drunk) plus the codeine and vitamin
b, will make for a more manageable hangover..

The first method is for those times you party on
so much, you just end up crashing.......

Bacardi is shit.

It's shittier than the cheapest rum, it's proof of the power of advertising and commercial muscle. In a lot of bars they only sell bacardi, the worlds worst rum.

Havana Club is the business but I don't know if you can get it in the States?
