View Full Version : Boney M or The Village People?

This is an arguement that has never really been settled...erm...in the pub, and I think it`s time for a definitive opinion.

Boney M had some quality songs like "Ma Baker", "Rasputin", "Painter Man", "Daddy cool" and "Sunny".

The Village People muscled in on the late `70`s disco craze with big hitters like "YMCA", "Macho man", "In the navy" and "You can`t stop the music".

I`m voting for Boney M as they tackled a tricky politcal situation with the classic "Belfast", a song that perfectly summed up the tension between the British government and Sinn Fein with a pumping disco beat.

Boney M by a mile although only one of the women sang on the records or live. The others were just decoration.

I am glad you brought this up.

Although The Village People's "In the navy" made many young men and women join the military in the hope they could contribute to world peace AND inspired people to come up with a - unbiased, non-patriotic - wonderful tv show called Jag, it is Boney M. who made the biggest impact on social and political life. You don't have to be a construction worker or an indian to understand that "Daddy Cool" brings up the topic of child abuse for instance, a matter no pre-Boney M. artist would have dared to touch.

Funny, Tiki and I have debated this topic on many an occasion. He seems to think Boney is the master of the craft, but how can he possibly overlook the sheer passion those Village People share amongst themselves?
