Britain contracts Al Gore on environment

LONDON, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- The British government has contracted with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore to lobby in Washington over its concerns about global warming.

The Bush administration has refused to sign on to the international Kyoto Accord to reduce greenhouse gases, claiming it would cripple the U.S. economy, so the British strategy focuses on the economic consequences of unchecked carbon emissions, The Guardian reported.

Gore has become a champion of environmental issues and this year released a documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," that focuses on how global warming is leading the world to extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and heat waves.

A report issued Monday by the British government warns that doing nothing about climate change will cost the global economy 5-20 percent of gross domestic product, while reducing emissions now would cost 1 percent, the newspaper reported.
