Six Arab states join rush to go nuclear
By Richard Beeston, Diplomatic Editor

Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, UAE and Saudi Arabia seek atom technology

THE SPECTRE of a nuclear race in the Middle East was raised yesterday when six Arab states announced that they were embarking on programmes to master atomic technology.

The move, which follows the failure by the West to curb Iran’s controversial nuclear programme, could see a rapid spread of nuclear reactors in one of the world’s most unstable regions, stretching from the Gulf to the Levant and into North Africa.

The countries involved were named by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Saudi Arabia. Tunisia and the UAE have also shown interest.

All want to build civilian nuclear energy programmes, as they are permitted to under international law. But the sudden rush to nuclear power has raised suspicions that the real intention is to acquire nuclear technology which could be used for the first Arab atomic bomb.

“Some Middle East states, including Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Saudi Arabia, have shown initial interest [in using] nuclear power primarily for desalination purposes,” Tomihiro Taniguch, the deputy director-general of the IAEA, told the business weekly Middle East Economic Digest. He said that they had held preliminary discussions with the governments and that the IAEA’s technical advisory programme would be offered to them to help with studies into creating power plants.

Mark Fitzpatrick, an expert on nuclear proliferation at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said that it was clear that the sudden drive for nuclear expertise was to provide the Arabs with a “security hedge”.

“If Iran was not on the path to a nuclear weapons capability you would probably not see this sudden rush [in the Arab world],” he said.

The announcement by the six nations is a stunning reversal of policy in the Arab world, which had until recently been pressing for a nuclear free Middle East, where only Israel has nuclear weapons.

Egypt and other North African states can argue with some justification that they need cheap, safe energy for their expanding economies and growing populations at a time of high oil prices.

The case will be much harder for Saudi Arabia, which sits on the world’s largest oil reserves. Earlier this year Prince Saud al-Faisal, the Foreign Minister, told The Times that his country opposed the spread of nuclear power and weapons in the Arab world.

Since then, however, the Iranians have accelerated their nuclear power and enrichment programmes.

KKKunt, it is just like you to post something totally irrelevant to the topic at hand.

What's the matter, did Mommy put your Tinker Toys up?

Actually Brie, that photo is quite apropos....

Point being, has our Invasion and Occupation for the almighty $$$ and to have somewhere other than the Saudi Land OBL finds so holy to base our troops really made things better in the region?

I say no.

And when you respond to DC with the mommy/tinker toys rap you negate any higher ground of debate you seem to hold so dear....

You are, truth be told, no better than those you ridicule.

BigBlandBlowjob, it is just like you to mindlessly SPAM the Front Line without considering the larger implications of the situations presented in your copy/pastes.

No, but your Mommy sucked my balls until her lips chapped over with a scab riddled glaze of puss and ball cheese.

It's also curious how 6 ARAB states suddenly decide to go nuclear (or nuk-u-ler in Chimpese) only days after we learn that the BCE posted a "how to build nuclear bombs" guide on the internet in ARABIC.

You liar. In retaliation I will reveal your wife's true identity then one of my cronies take the fall to cover my ass.

At the very least the two of you will get book deals as a result of all the publicity. Maybe a magazine feature or two.

Why do you hate Safeway?

I have a circle of shit for this thread.

Let them all have nukes and blow each other up. Hooraaaay, no more terrorist cuntries.

Only they know how much oil is left in that thar ground. Some are saying it is almost depleted. No oil means they need some other source of energy. That would be nuclear.

Why should a few countries possess nuclear technology? Yes it should be watched over on what it is used for, where the byproduct is stored and how protected is the enviroment and it itself is from extremist.

Now is the time to move away from nuclear. It is a more harmful, deadly energy that has worse ramafications than coal when it is burned and the stacks not scrubbed. As fast as the world came about in technology, I am pretty sure we can come up with a simple solution for fusion if people would stop trying to damn hard and going by the text books of theories. Look outside the box once in awhile and the answer will be there.

God I love ranting.

"Nuclear States" in the middle east is a joke.

Open your eyes.

Review history.

Think ahead.

Now drop the damn bombs already and melt the middle east.

Who can blame them?

The US and UK policy is that if they don't like you they will attack and invade you unless like North Korea you have a nuclear deterant.

Cheers!

Nuclear is by far a cleaner and safer way of getting energy.

Believe it or not, a coal-fired plant releases 100 times more radioactive material than an equivalent nuclear reactor - right into the air, too, not into some carefully guarded storage site.

I don't. But we never "reduced" those arms since we've never produced them...

Ok, if we have none "in stock" it's relatively simple in todays world to put some together.

I am not really in favor of melting the middle east. There are good people trying to do good things in their lives and communities throughout the Arab nations.
I do, however, have a huge problem with their peers who are trying to force their Muslim views on the rest of the world.
If I'm the infidel in their eyes, they want me dead. If they want me dead, I have to take the fight to them. If I have to defend my life, it's best defended on my terms.
It is painfully obvious that these nations are driven in action by their faith in the Koran, and the teachings therein that expressly promote the killing of the infidel.
You better watch out! If these people get nukes you can bet the ranch they are going to use them against us and cry out to Ala in praise. Problem is, how do we wack the bad guys without wacking the innocent?
We can start by stopping the nuclear programs of known world enemies such as Iran and North Korea, and ask the real God of heaven and earth to help mankind.
