Bush: “I Thought We Were Going To Do Fine”
No Do-Overs, Bush Says


(November 8, 2006)—President Bush told reporters Wednesday he didn’t expect the GOP to lose control of the US House and possibly the US Senate.

The results of Tuesday’s general election gave control of the House to Democrats for the first time in more than a decade.

Wednesday afternoon, it appeared the control of the Senate would turn on a single race in Virginia, which might not be resolved for several weeks.

Mr. Bush called Democratic leaders of both chambers Wednesday to congratulate them on the victory, but it apparently wasn’t a call he was expecting to make.

“Actually I thought we were going to do fine yesterday,” Mr. Bush said. “Shows what I know. I thought we were going to be fine in an election.”

Although voters in exit polls indicated that the war in Iraq figured heavily in their decisions, Mr. Bush said the war was not the only factor in the outcome.

In his home state of Texas, Mr. Bush points to the House race in former Majority Leader Tom DeLay's Houston area district.

DeLay was still on the ballot, even though he quit back in June and faces money laundering charges and questions about an influence-peddling investigation.

Voters there were urged to support a write-in candidate in the solidly Republican district.

Mr. Bush even visited.

But in the end, a Democrat won with 52 percent of the vote.

Another race Bush points to is the one in Florida, for what used to be Mark Foley's House seat.

Foley quit Congress in September, amid a scandal involving e-mails sent to former House pages.

But it was too late to get his name off the ballot.

In that district, Republicans were told any votes for Foley would go to a state representative.

But the Democrat running there won instead.

Mr. Bush also points to strong races run by Senator Hillary Clinton in New York, and by Governor Ed Rendell and Senator-elect Bob Casey in Pennsylvania.

I remember watching a smugly confident Dick Cheney on Meet the Press telling Tim Russert he was confident the Republicans would keep the House and Senate.

Dick was out of touch. We were getting pissed at the Bush Administration's Louis the XIV "Stay the course!" attitude. It finally came clear that the neo cons were betting the religiouse right and gun owners would mindlessly vote Republican enough to allow the blood sucking game to continue.

I'm sorry, you are correct. They worked hard for their income, Therefore their children are entitled to the same rights as your examples. At the same time, they are also entitled to the same loopholes in tax benefits as everyone else.

Don't get me wrong, I think Paris is as skanky as they come and doesn't deserve a dime. But, hey, who am I to judge or dictate how the wealth is distributed.

Unless, that is exactly what you have in mind...wealth distribution.
