Mike Patton is one of the most creative artist around IMO. I think he is one of the most talented people in music today.
This guy's recording output is amazing. Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom, General Patton, the list goes on and on. The number of projects he has going on at any given time is unreal and he's done most everything on his own terms. Hell, Patton launched his own record label, "Ipecac" so he could do all his work without having to find label support.

Anytime I play his stuff around friends or people at work the response is almost always swift and to the point. It's either what the fuck is that, turn that shit off. Or who the fuck is that, that is brilliant.

Anyone else with me or do ya think Patton has lost a marble or two.
I'm curious if the opinions here are as sharply divided as they are among my crowd.

He tries too hard. I enjoyed some FNM, but most of his material is really fucked up. The Angel Dust album was just nоise.

His music is really out there thats for sure. You never know what your going to get from one minute to the next.
Thats what I like so much about it though. He's never boring and pushes the boundaries of the music in each song. Its interesting the way he puts so many styles and sounds into the music. Sometimes it works, other times it doesnt. This music is definitely an acquired taste.

Excellent thread Tiki!

I think Patton is a genius. In FNM he brought great lyrics and, more importantly, a vocal style that most rock bands wouldn't have thought of: he wasn't all about wailing and vibrato....

And if anyone doesn't think he can sing, check out FNM cover of "Easy"!

His side projects are bizarre in many ways, you either get it or you don't - but you can never doubt that he's creative, and prodcutive. No-one sounds like him, and it's not like you can listen to anything he's done and spot the influences as the record progresses, its like he's taken everything he likes and mixed it up so its unrecognisable.

He's up there with Trent Reznor for me as one of the most important musicians in heavy music...

Mike's a weirdo albeit a likeable weirdo. I like most of his stuff but Tiki isn't allowed to listen to Fantomas in my presence. I just can't take that shit.

On a side note, rumor has it that FNM's fudge-packin' keyboard player Roddy Bottom's real name is Dylan Lee Roth. Mikey refused to bend him over during the filming of the "Easy" video and Dylan hates him for it.

Big party ala cancun sorta kinda shit.
Mike was in a boat on a channel in Amstredam and said:
That's pretty sad.

The only human being I ever heard say that.He was almost cryin'.
He is cool.
I wouldn't wanna bend over my keyboard player either.

Very true Binnie, one of the things that great musicians seem to do is have lots of passionate fans and critics.
Plus, with the body of work he spits out he's bound to record some garbage mixed in with his great work , à la Zakk Wylde.

As a result of this thread I was cranking FNM all weekend!

"King for a Day" was such a huge impact on a lot of the nu metal bands, although those bands robbed the music of any integrity.

As for Angel Dust, it gets better as time progresses, to these ears at least...

As much as I like Faith No More era Patton, their music pales in comparison to his other projects. It's some of the most interesting music out there today. Sometime's it works, other times not, but you can count on him to constantly push the boundaries of music.

With Faith No More, Patton seemed to have more control over their sound with each successive record. IMO they got better over time with his influence. Unfortunately that's also what killed them as the other members didnt like where he was taking them.

binnie
12-15-2006, 03:53 AM
He's certainly freer to be himself outside of FNM, and those projects are all groundbreaking and like nothing else I've ever heard.

But FNM were like that in the 80's and early 90's too.

FNM and Janes Addiction were the soul of 80's heavy music - no-one else was as invnetive or inspiring at the time, or had as unique a sound.

Some bands just can't be copied....

In the FNM home video, Roddy was telling a lady about gay American males using gerbils, blah, blah, blah. I was thinking, "how does he know that??!"

Well now you know! That Roddy's been loud and proud for awhile now. I read an interview with him a long time ago where he discussed his disdain for Mike. Seems Mikey used to taunt him about his sexual inclinations pretty often. I'm betting he wanted some and Mike wouldn't give it up.

Gerbils?!? Fuckin' A! I thought that was only some sick urban legend. I suppose Roddy and his nasty Bottom would know.

Absolutely, and he also refuses to let himself be pigeonholed into one style of music. He's not one bit scared to try something new. Sure, it's not for everyone but I don't think he really cares. He's making the kind of music he want's to, and thats how it should be.

I think Patton wrote "Evidence" in honor of Thunder.

The Peeping Tom disc is the closest he has come to FNM style singing in a long time. You guys that like FNM should give it a listen.

Peeping Tom is an excellent disc. My fave tune from that one is "Sucker." It's great to hear Norah Jones singing the f-bomb. I have a whole new respect for her.

Cheers, I was debating whether to get it or not, but I'll pick it up now.

Been spinning my old Mr. bungle discs a lot due to this thread!

It still has it's strange moments but as a whole, it's pretty accessable (read: normal) in comparison to his other projects. Definitely some good vocals on it.
