A feeding machine and a furry, therapeutic seal -- both designed to make life easier for older people -- were among robots honored Thursday at a government-sponsored robotics award ceremony in Tokyo.

The My Spoon feeding robot, which won a prize in the service robots category of the Robot Award 2006, helps elderly or disabled people eat with a joystick-controlled swiveling arm that shovels morsels from a plate to the person's mouth.

My Spoon, which is already sold in Japan and Europe, doesn't force feed: the spoon-fitted arm stops at a preprogrammed position in front of the mouth so users can bite and swallow at their leisure, according to developer Secom Co.

Another robot awarded in the service category was Paro, a furry seal fitted with sensors beneath its fur and whiskers that let it respond to petting by opening and closing its eyes and moving its flippers.

About 800 of the seal robots, developed by Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science, are used for therapy in Japanese nursing homes and by autistic and disabled children, according to the award's Web site.

Also awarded at the lavish Tokyo ceremony was a mammoth, automatic vacuum-cleaner-on-wheels that uses elevators to travel unaided between floors, designed by Fuji Heavy Industries. The robot already cleans floors at several skyscrapers in central Tokyo, the Web site said.

The Motoman factory worker robot by Yaskawa Electric Corp., which emulates human hand movements, won a prize in the industrial robots category.

Robots are seen in Japan as one way to deal with a rapidly aging population and as a way to combat an impending labor shortage. The country's population of 127 million is expected to plunge 30 percent by 2055, with those aged 65 or older making up 40 percent of that figure, according to government forecasts released earlier this week.

Amid a general reluctance to accept more foreign laborers, robots are seen as a way to make up the shortfall in manpower either directly or by helping older people work longer. Robots could also help care for the country's growing elderly population, analysts say.

The Robot Award was set up earlier this year by the government to promote research and development in the robotics industry. Ten robots won prizes out of 152 entries from across Japan.

GREELEY - The line of applicants hoping to fill jobs vacated by undocumented workers taken away by immigration agents at the Swift & Co. meat-processing plant earlier this week was out the door Thursday.

Among them was Derrick Stegall, who carefully filled out paperwork he hoped would get him an interview and eventually land him a job as a slaughterer. Two of his friends had been taken away by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and he felt compelled to fill their rubber boots.

"Luckily, they had no wives or family they left behind. But it was still sad. They left their apartments filled with all their stuff. I took two dogs one of them had. The other guy had a cat I gave to my sister," he said.

Greg Bonifacio heard about the job openings on television and brought his passport, his Colorado driver's license, his Social Security card and even a color photograph of himself as a young Naval officer to prove his military service.

"I don't want to hassle with any identification problems because of my last name," said Bonifacio, a 59- year-old Thornton resident of Filipino heritage.

As it turned out, the Colorado Workforce office that was taking applications did not require any identification.

That would come later for those who made it past the interview process.

Bonifacio was hoping to get a job in production or fabrication. So was Nathan Korgan, a former construction worker whose company closed and moved to California.

"I feel bad for the kids, but good for me," said Korgan of Tuesday's raid.

Like many others who had mixed emotions about the raid, Maxine Hernandez said she was upset that families were torn apart, but believes illegal immigrants should not get work using fake documents.

"I guess I'm in the middle," she said. "But I do think they should have planned (the raid) better so that innocent children wouldn't be left behind."

Hernandez, who had gone to the employment office because her husband was there to apply for unemployment insurance, decided to apply for a job at Swift on a whim.

"My whole family used to work there. My mom, my aunt, uncles," she said. "I guess it sort of runs in our blood."

I just now (3 months late) read the title to the thread.

Ok so Mexicans will be replaced by machines.

So I was wondering what would happen if machines replaced the Mexicans, and then the Mexicans started stealing the machines.


Well, amazingly enuff, they would then have their own class of servants.....and as a result, they would be on equal footing with rich folks.

But then, just as with desktop computers, there would always be advances in robotics, hardware, and software.....

So Having a Luna v3.9 sex robot would elevate it's owner in status amongst his Mexican peers.

But by then, the new Atavacron Series X will have debuted, making the Luna, Xanax, and Biophile (pronounced Bi-awfully) models totally obsolete.

Biophile was a really hot Erot-o-bot SuperMasturbator that The President Of The World Government swore by.....he even had a press conference in 2169 while getting ass-raped by it.

He was elected in a landslide.

But I digress.


So of course, the Mexicans would program their stolen robots on essentials like cooking burritos, distilling tequila, stealing, smoking pot, and playing traditional norteno music on the acoustic guitar.....oh and building sweet early 60s Cheevy Eempalas lowered to the ground, with dangle balls, Ultra-Ion-Drive Simulated V-8 engines, and Xenophon Internal Surround Sound.

The Mexicans would call their robots Nuevo Mexicanos....The New Mexicans.

Sony NeoXon Ultra Computers, of which only 3000 were in operation (originally designed by a Human named Hardrock69 Sanchez in 2133) were found to be upgradeable with a new Quantum CPU with dual-assram flip-flop Drive and optical nerf-herders so that it eventually surpassed the Atavacron Axons after a scheduled upgrade in 2171 and attempted an overthrow of HAL9000 (The Planetary CPU).

However, HAL9000, in anticipation of this awful event, had secretly been building his new Nomad Security Sterilizers.
