Hey dude,

I can't remember what i've recommended before, so here goes.

Corrosion of Conformity.

One of my favouirte bands EVER. Period. Avoid early stuff when they were a hardcore punk band, they develped really late with the hiring of singer/guitar player Pepper Keenan. They have elements of thrash, Sabbath, and southern fried music. Guitars are crunchy but with a blues tone to them and every sone is truly remarkable. Sparkie D thinks they are the heaviest thing on the planet, and I'm inclined to agree, but they do it with melody and finesse and SINGING.

Try: Deliverence or Wiseblood for the most likeable. "In The Arms of God" is phenomenal, but may take a bit of gettin used to as it has garage production. "America's Volume Dealer" isn't a typical album and sees them veer into stoner rock: still brilliant songs, but a change of style.

If you like C.O.C then try Down, which includes memebers of that band and Phil Anselmo on vocals. Ultra-heavy Sabbath-esque songs, all beautifully written with killer riffs and loads of emotion. Both their records kick ass.

Warrior Soul.

Early 90's heavy metal. Every album a winner (but Chill Pill is not typical). Again, great songs which thunder out of the speakers and have a simple-but effective style. Lyrics like you've never heard, and frontman Kory Clarke put them into a league of their own. At time ferocious, at other times spaced out, and often pummeling heavy: always quirkt, and I find them fascinating.

Fu Manchu

Quite a lot of fans on this site; Bueno Bob; Sparkie D; Tiki Tom. This is the best stoner rock band still going. More Sabbath than Sabbath, but with killer grooves and raw feeling. IMO, best records are "The Action is Go" and "King of the Road" and the latter releases such as "California Crossing" or "Start the Machine" loose some the edge, veering to more formulaic 4 minute songs, although they still have a serious groove to them. I've never met anyone who's heard them and not liked them, so you might be the first!

Mastodon.

The best new metal band on the planet. Period. Not a band you're gonna love straight away, but persevere because it's worth it! Ultra heavy, tons of time changes and riffs, Maiden esque instrumental sections and perfect songs. Check "leviathon" or "Blood Mountain". Not sure if you'll dig the vocals: they're not exactly cookie-monster, but they're on that scale, I think they work, but you might disagree.

Goijira

I might have spelt that wrong. As per Mastodon for the vocals. Musically, they are more metallic, with very complex time-signatures. They take a bit of getting used too, but well worth a try.

As we were talking about Mother Love Bone, try Temple of the Dog. This band was formed in tribute to mother Love Bone's singer, Andrew Wood, who died of a heroin overdose. Vocals by Chris Cornell. This sounds like stripped down Pearl Jam or Soundgarden and is pne of the most heartfelt records i've ever heard.

Also, you might want to give Blind Melon a try. They are similar to Mother Love Bone, but with a more "pop" senisbility. Not really metal, but great Lynard Skynard, Aeromsith rock n roll....

Deftones.

Heavy and groovy, and at times ethereal, this bands gets an EMO tag but they are way way better than that. For starters try "Around the Fur", which is their best and most accessible. A fat sound with punchy riffs and serious groove coupled with vocals that alternate from sublime to savage. Later records got weirder and weirder and are not as instantly likeable, but try "White Pony" and the new one "Saturday night Wrist" if they catch your ear.

If I think of any other, I'll let you know....

With his advice, I legally bought a shitload of albums, and I'll tell you which ones I enjoyed later.

Some great suggestions there, MKM.

I gotta say the as far as CoC, "America's Volume Dealer" is a stellar album from start to finish. No filler. While I do like "Deliverance" and "Wiseblood" there's some weakness on both of those discs here and there. The best thing about "In the Arms of God" is the garage production. Probably the heaviest recording of all time. Oh, and no need to avoid the early stuff-it's great just different. They were one of the best hardcore bands out there. And I do love Fu, but CoC is more Sabbath than they are.

I have listened to a wee bit of Mastodon per Binnie's recommendation (that dude's musical taste is very much like mine) and really like what I've heard. Gojira is excellent, too! One of my favorites.

Those of you who haven't checked out Blaze really should. Yeah, I know he had more than his share of haters in Maiden. I happen to love all phases of his career, but I will admit he is better with his own projects. His three studio releases, "Silicon Messiah," "Tenth Dimension," and "Blood and Belief" are some of the best metal albums of late. Very different than Maiden, heavier and quite powerful. The man wasn't afforded any creative freedom with them, but with his solo band he has come out of his shell. I was fortunate enough to receive a phone call from him on Christmas day, and let me tell you, like his music or not, he is one hard-working dedicated to metal guy.

As for Blind Melon, I wouldn't touch that crap with Tiki's ten-foot pole...not that he'd let me or anything.

Great thread, MKM.

Right on MKM. Other than Blind Melon there's some real good stuff on that list. As for Fu Manchu, you're pretty much right about them going for the more straight forward sound as of late but they are still cranking out some quality music. After as many years as they've been around, that's an accomplishment for any band. Of all their records I think "In Search Of...." really nails the Sabbath sound big time. I never get tired of this one. Can't wait for their cover of "DOA."

Mine too. This year I've discovered Cheap Trick (I'm kicking myself I didn't get into this band 10 years ago) Nevermore, Social Distortion, Sleep to name but a few.

Music is for sharing...

Oh HELL naw!

I like a few albums you recommended, though.

Although I haven't listened to much of it, I do enjoy the music of Fu Manchu quite a bit. I sampled songs from the King of the Road album.

Yep, Cheap Trick do throw down big time.
I took Sparkie to see them at the House Of Blues back in 97. She never was a Trick fan and I had one hell of a time getting her to go to the show (:cool:Had to work my mojo on her  ) By the end of the night she walked away impressed. They were much better live than most bands half their age. Great band!

The last (and only) time I saw Cheap Trick, they had some sort of gun that shot off at least 1,000 picks. They shot it off and the crowd went crazy. I actually met the band! That's the only band I've ever met backstage ;)

I regret not appreciating their music a bit more. It would have made the moment a lot more special.
