Starkey did a great job...in fact, the entire group sounded much better than it had any right to, age considered.

Well done.

The Who
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Who are an English rock band who first came to prominence in the 1960s and grew to be considered one of the greatest and most influential rock 'n' roll bands of all time.[1] Except for periods of retirement from 1983 to 1988 and from 1990 to 1995, the band members have continued to perform as a live act. Their most recent studio album, Endless Wire, was released in 2006.
Noted for the dynamism of their performances and for their thoughtful and art-influenced music, the members of The Who are also acknowledged as rock pioneers, popularising, along with contemporaries The Kinks, the power chord and the rock opera (most notably Tommy). Their earlier "mod" albums, which boasted short, aggressive rock songs, Pete Townshend's distinctive power chords, Roger Daltrey's powerful vocals, John Entwistle's nimble bass style, Keith Moon's explosive drumming, and constant themes of youthful rebellion and romantic confusion, were formative influences on hard rock and power pop, while their loud and violent concerts helped pave the way for punk rock and heavy metal. In their early days they were notorious for auto-destructive art displays, destroying their instruments at the end of shows (an activity favoured both by infamous wildman Moon and by Townshend, whose guitar-smashing would become a rock cliché).
The Who are #8 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock, #9 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Rock 'n' Roll and the #8 artist of all time on acclaimedmusic.net.
From mod rockers to rock operas to hard rock, The Who reigned triumphant as prime contenders, in the minds of many, for the title of World's Greatest Rock Band.

Yeah - you're absolutely right, Starkey is a fucking monster. I recently downloaded some awesome boots from this tour and he is definately right up there with the great rock drummers. And no wonder - look who his teachers were.

Those classic vids vanhalener posted are really what its all about and in a lot of respects I am a Who purist. But I have always loved how the Who has managed to sound increadible with each incarnation of their band. They have really achieved a new standard with the latest line-up.

I always loved this tune, especially the lyrics - from the Kenny Jones era:

Jones did some nice stuff live the first couple of years he was with the band, but on the two albums he did with them and on the first Who Farewell Tour he was just utterly stiff.

I was fairly taken aback at how well Bargain sounded when the clip was loading up and I saw it was from probably 2002 or so, and I think Starkey comes the closest to capturing Moon's spirit than any of the other post-Moon drummers, although Simon did some nice stuff on the '89 tour.

Hey Ford: do you think that guy posting all those esoteric Who vids on YouTube under the name "IvortheEngineDriver" is really Pete? You know Pete is really into the internet (for research...) and whoever that is has some access to some pretty rare stuff!

Thats entirely possible...he does do an awful lot of interweb-based activity...

And...arguably invented the idea via Lifehouse
