Well, at least I'm honest. And while were on the subject of truth....

Dave era Van Halen has been my fave band for 23 years now, and Eddie Van Halen is my fave guitarist. The only 2 times I've felt truly sick was when Dave left the band in '85 and when they hired Gary in '96.

If things were ineveitalby not going to work with Dave, it's true I wanted them to get Sammy back rather than another GRAVE mistake like Gary. But, keep in mind, Dave is and will always be the quintessential front man.

you guys need to reconsider your ranking of Diver Down

"Little guitars" - Everything great about VH is encapsulated in the song.

"The full Bug" - "Hang 'Em High"

personally I can't rank 'em

Sorry dude that is my least favorite. It's filled with cover tunes and filler. Only 7 original tunes out of 12 and 3 of the originals are intrumentals. I've heard rumors that WB wanted an album ASAP after Pretty Woman was such a hit so the band went in the studio and recorded this pretty quickly. In my opinion it is the worst VH CD well not as bad as VH III.

Diver Down has it's moments:

Hang 'Em High
Full Bug
Secrets

Little Guitars is ok.

All the tunes on it serve their purpose.

I even dig Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)

Can't say I've listened to Where Have All The Good Times Gone, Intruder/Pretty Woman or Dancing In The Streets much. Didn't even listen to them much when Diver Down came out.

Dancin in the Streets is probably my least favorite classic VH song. It still has enough of the old sound for me to still listen to it. Ed's solo still sounds like Ed... unlike that crap they pass off as Ed nowadays.

Ah, C'mon man. You are smarter than this. Are you telling me that you think Diver Down was the shits? I think musically it was a fantastic album that showed VH were capable of re-doing tunes better than what they were meant to be originally.
Seriously, Big Bad Bill is a great tune. Daves voice and that clarinet are great. Awesome rendition of Pretty Woman. Dancin in the Streets.
Not to mention Secrets, Little Guitars and Hang em High along with Full Bug. That album rocked, and to say VH3 was better. Hey man. You are lying. Simple and true. VH3 sucked serious ass. Id rather listen to Timberlakes "Gonna rock your body" over and over again instead of listening to VH3 one more time.

I have been playing the ROTH era cd's constantly 4 2 dayz now...

I guess it's all subjective, but it's jus 2 fuckin' hard 2 rank them in order. my reason 4 sayin' that iz, there'z jus no filler in there!

ROTH really marked hiz territory within thoze songs, his attitude, his personality, and that fuckin' ROTH scream...u jus can't tuch it... and they still shine and still kick ass today az they did 20 yearz ago.

even the cover tunes, I love "You're No Good", damn...even "Dancing In The Streets", Dave's vocals are fuckin' sublime on that.
they alwayz play that song on our local Classic Rock station and I dare not one of u say u don't jam 2 dat shit when it comes on?

I dunno know...I love "In A Simple Rhyme"...
I love "The Full Bug"
I love "Top Jimmy"
I love "Atomic Punk"
I love "Outta Love Again"

I'll take them in the order they were presented.
There is an evolution of sound going on that has to be heard in order.

The evolution lasted for six albums, then it started to decay before our very ears....5150 is Satans Work.

Oh, er... Fair Warning is stellar, OK; but not just as much as the other 3 I put ahead. :o

The whole album is VH at their best, but I wish they had dug into the earth of Mean Street a little more on a couple more songs - though "Dirty Movies", "Hear about it later", "Unchained" and "One foot out the door" kick bull elephants' asses.

I'll always prefer WaCF - my Windows opens with the closing riff and closes with the intro to "In a simple rhyme".

1. Women And Children First
Suprized, not a lot of love here for Women and Children First. Not only did VH rework their sound, they created a new genre in rock, BIG ROCK. Not the best songs per se but for me it best captures Van Halen's spirit.

2. Van Halen
All time classic.

3. Van Halen II
Disappointed when it came out (VH lite) but recently I've come to love it.

4. Fair Warning
Their most innovative work.

5. Diver Down
Some of their best work (Full Bug, Secrets) mixed with too many covers and instrumentals.

6. 1984
It's their In Through The Out Door, MTV pop rock.

1984 - Bought this when I was a wee lad...it's a brilliant album, start to finish.

DIVER DOWN - Nothing does it for me like SECRETS, THE FULL BUG, HANG 'EM HIGH, WHERE HAVE ALL THE GOOD TIMES GONE, LITTLE GUITARS.

VAN HALEN II - I still love DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY...and the album cuts are unbeatable. LIGHT UP THE SKY is just one of the best things they ever did.

FAIR WARNING - UNCHAINED, PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, MAIN STREET...'nuff said.

WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST - LOSS OF CONTROL, COULD THIS BE MAGIC, IN A SIMPLE RHYME...this may be fifth on my list...but it's still almost perfect.

VAN HALEN - Yeah, the debut album is too neat and too one-note for me to like it as much as the other five. It's still brilliant...but I like the others even more. I still think they could have picked a few off the demos that would have been better.

When I first discovered and learned to absolutely adore classic DLR-era Van Halen, I used to constantly rank the amazing six in my mind and just as easily change my mind.

However, I gotta say that Fair Warning and WACF have always been my top two from the start. Today, I reckon my much more certain personal rankings would be this:

I find it hard to rank them 1 - 6... I can put them into three tiers...

VH I: I'm the One... in your face... here we are... everyone else run and hide.
Fair Warning: The Angry Album... compare it to other "rock" at that time... this was LIGHT YEARS ahead of what others were doing.

WACF: After wild success, they get more creative freedom and it manifests itself here. The first inkling that this band is on par with a Led Zeppelin or Beatles because of the variety, songwriting, attitude and musical expertise.
1984: Again... look at what else was going on in the ROCK WORLD at this time... these guys just were trailblazers... they still blew the doors off with Hot for Teacher, Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain... but then you get something like Drop Dead Legs (I'm not saying I don't like DDL... I'm just saying it's a really good song that is very different than Hot for Teacher).

VHII: Essentially VHI, part II. I love this album. Beautiful Girls... Light Up the Sky... Somebody Get Me a Doctor... Bottoms Up!... JESUS H CHRIST...
Diver Down: Too short and now based on interviews we know what happened on this album. Still... Hang 'em High... Little Guitars... Secrets... all great cuts.

1 - 6... Tiers 1 - 3... back east... down south... out west... no matter how you slice it... the 6 Pack is better than anything that came after it. And you can thank one person for that... Diamond David Lee Roth!!!

The first four albums were more or less perfect. As far as I'm concerned, it's a 4 way tie for first place.

Diver Down's flaw was, obviously, too many covers. But the originals made up for it.

We all know what was wrong with 1984 - the goddamn synth pop crap. "Jump" grew on me, the other one ("I'll Wait") never did. And I still like the original version of "House of Pain" from the Gene Simmons demo better than the one that ended up on this album.

A great record with some of Mikey's best bass playing.
Sammy rocks on this, raising the VH bar even higher.

Stellar stuff 5 stars!

This was going to be my number one choice but all the Sam stuff is 100%.
Great record, great lyrics, great playing, Dave Lee Who?

The best live album of all time! It was so good that even Ed shed a tear when he mixed (some) of it...

I would say:

1.) "...and someone said, Fair Warning."
2.) Believe it or not: 1984 and VHI tied
3.) Diver Down, just because it's a fun summer album even if it is covers and filler.
4.) WACF
5.) VHII

Agreed. Too tough to rank.

Recently made a mix tape of the first 6 that I'm listening to. Here's what's on it:

On Fire
I'm The One
Atomic Punk
DOA
Light Up The Sky
Somebody Get Me A Doctor
Fools
Romeo Delight
Meanstreet
Dirty Movies
Sinner's Swing
Hear About It Later
Hang 'Em High
Secrets
The Full Bug
Drop Dead Legs
House Of Pain
You made a Tape???
In 2004?? Fuck, did you buy a CD burner yet??

I can't decide which album is the best, but one thing I know for sure - "1984" is the worst. Yesterday I listened to the entire sixpack and when it came to "1984" I was struck that it was so different from the previous five. It sounds like an Eddie's solo album with Dave's vocals thrown in to make it more acceptable for the audience. The first five records were pure R'n'R with perfect balance between instruments and vocals, while "1984" is full of tiring intros, bridges and heavy structures. It's Eddie unleashed in his 5150 studio.

How could I be so blind to like this record? My fault. I've never listened to Van Hagar, so I can't compare "1984" to what Ed was doing later. But I can see Dave's arguments for leaving the band - he probably didn't want to be just a singer in Eddie's solo project.

23 years ago was 1986... you were sick a year after the fact?

Admit it... you missed the boat and you've been rowing to catch up ever since.

wacf = great sounding songs

diver down= again sounds great loud, crank that mother fucker

van halen = (atbl), (on fire), (atomic punk), are all kick ass songs

vh2 = only because of the song (women in love)

fair warning = (hear about it later) was freekin awsome

1984 = im sorry but this is my least favorite album by far, they definately went a different direction with it, (hear about it later) on fair warning trumped this whole album by itself if you ask me, still wouldnt trade it for any other bands album. maybe AC/DC's whole bon scott collection.

Sincerely how many of you who want put a Van Halen's album, put "Van halen" and never put "1984".Everydody loves the six pacs! but when i want to listen some Van Halen, I put "little guitars",or the album "1984" or "fair warning" ,MSM ,CGTSNM ... "Van Halen" is for history but I've more emotion with "fair warning" or "1984"

You were too young for "VH" and "VH II" when they came out. That's the reason, I think.

It's just i listened a lot theses 2 albums and now i'm less pleasure to listen "runnin' with the devil" or "atomic punk" or "on fire" or "bottomps up!" or "women in love" or "outta love again".I loved these songs when i was young .

:barf: "atomic punk"

But:
:notworthy: "on fire"
 "bottomps up!"
:happy0065: "women in love"

How about "Ain't Talkin", "Jamie's Cryin", "SGMA Doctor", "Light Up" and "DOA". These tracks still rock!

1.Fair Warning-Best album from start to finish. Eddie at his peak. This was the worst selling album of the Roth era. Go figure. Just shows you that album sales mean nothing when making evaluations.
2.VH1-Still incredible after all these years. Can't argue with anyone that puts it in the number one spot.
3.1984-Some people don't like it because it hints at the commercialism that is
to follow but it is still a great album. I skip the song "Jump" but "Drop Dead Legs" and "Girl Gone Bad" are two of my all time favs.
We can all argue over the order of my top three but there is a significant drop off after these three albums in my opinion. I can't see why anyone would rank any of the others above these.

4.Women and Children First-Not up to par with my top 3 but at least it's
all original. Nothing really grabs you on this album but it's solid.
5.Diver Down.-Has some great moments but not a great album as a whole, especially when you consider that it's almost all cover songs. It has its place though.

6.Van Halen 2-Has a couple of decent songs but the album as a whole is garbage. It was written in a week and it really shows. It blows my mind that some people are putting it so high on their list. I'd put most of the Sammy albums above it.

Fair Warning: Cannot be fucked with, from start to finish...rock solid!
WACF: Romeo Delight, Fools, Loss of Control...smokin' shit!
1984: Aside from keyboard pap, there are some heavyweights there!
VH II: No sophmore jinx here! dropped a spot for the cover.
VH I: Strong debut, revolutionized hard rock guitar dropped for two covers.
DD: A great, albeit short, album...stuff like Hang 'em High was weapons-grade plutonium, but dead last for 5 covers.

I realize The Mighty started out as a cover band, and most new bands back then did a cover to help get noticed...I'm just ranking the albums for their wealth of VH-penned material. Don't get me wrong, they blow the lids off those covers they cut, and it was uber-cool that they got Jan on an album, too!:)

Van Halen I....because it was the one that started it all. The first note of Eruption set the music world On Fire.

Fair Warning.......the Eddie album, dark and the boys were in top form.

Women and Children First.....crazy mix of tunes.

Van Halen II.....awesome follow up and some great pop/rock. One of the best summertime albums of all time.

Diver Down....everyone says this was a rushed album and Pretty Women was only released to keep their name in the spot light. Once it charted the record company demanded an album. Little Guitars, Hang 'Em High, Cathedral, Secrets and The Full Bug are my favs...I like the covers, too.

1984......Great Album start to finish.....very few bands can I listen to an album start to finish.....guess that's why I'm here.
