View Full Version : Windows Vista: My advice

Don't upgrade.

It's really a piece of shit.

The best version, Ultimate, is around 400 bucks. Many of you may not have a kick ass computer, so you'll be FORCED to upgrade if you want to keep up with the times.

Read: upgrade or buy a new system.

You guys should really check out a Mac mini. Cheap as hell (starting at 600), fast, and generally a better experience.

Microsoft agrees with me when I say OS X is the best. The sincerest form of flattery is imitation. MS even copied the fucking wallpapers of Tiger.

Vista:

Mac OS X:

I'm just saying: Don't let a corporation force you to upgrade and live with hell. For 200 more, get a system and enjoyable experience that will last.

Well, if you ever want to upgrade to something, consider switching to Apple. I've said many times in the past that I'd never own a Mac, but, after trying it, I'll never go back.

Of course, price isn't an issue to me. You should know why by now ;)

No thanks! I think I'll stick with xp for a while, then try and learn how to use Linux. I'm fed up with Micro$oft and their insatiable greed! Vista might just end up being the straw that breaks the camel's back for me and gets me away from Windows! Sounds like nothing but a resource hog from all I've heard of it!

I will not upgrade.

Xp is all I need. And Windoze 2000 was the last OS I ever actually bought.

I will never give those assholes another dollar.

Fuck MicroShaft.

They can suck my fucking dick!

It is fast getting to the point now where Linux can run most MicroShaft formatted programs.

By the time I am ready to leave MS behind, Linux will run just abut anything.

Does anyone really go and buy MS operating systems
the minute they are released ??

I wait until at least a year before I even look at it....

By that time the obligitory 3 or more service packs
have been released ands its getting closer to what
the original should have been like in the first place..

XP is fine now... Why upgrade at this point ?

In fact, although unsupported Win98se still runs
perfectly ok....

I'm not trying to start any pro-Microsoft bullshit but Vista really isn't that bad. It has some pretty cool new features and the new Aero 3D GUI is fairly nice to work with. It requires some horsepower, though. Don't even think about using the new features with less than 1Gb of RAM and a fairly new processor, >1Ghz (so 3 or 4 years old, no older). I've been testing Vista for over a year and have seen the improvements made since receiving the alpha build late in 2005.

If you're going to buy a copy, wait. Wait at least 6 months, if not a full year. Let others discover the problems and let MS do their job fixing them. There continue to be reports of Vista drivers being hard to find for older video and sound cards. The new DVD encryption and copying rules are going to prove to be a pain in the ass for those who make DVD copies.

My personal opinion is to never purchase Vista directly. Let someone with a VLA (volume license agreement) buy it and bundle it with a hardware purchase (full system or hard drive in some cases). Getting the new OS this way gives MS far less money and you can convince yourself that you're not directly supporting Microsoft (delusional, yes, but if it lets you sleep at night...)

Things I like:
- Some of the Gadgets are OK.
- The new 3D desktop theme is also OK (browsing open programs using alt+tab or simply moving icon over toolbar is a nice feature)
- Media Player was a separate install (assuming because of lawsuit settlements). Means you can avoid installing it altogether and go straight to a media player of your choice.
- Security seems to be greatly improved. Vista now uses a Linux type feature that doesn't allow system changes without direct approval from an administrator account. Firewall seems to be much better configured.
- New Installation interface is easier to use.

Things I don't like:
- administration and support has been made more complicated as the user environment has become more "friendly". Frustrating for the PC technicians out there.
- A lot of touchy feely changes that will only ever make sense to the designers. File-Edit-View-Tools window menus have all but disappeared, replaced by often hard to find Options drop-down menus (often located in odd places in the window).
- Office 2007 has been overhauled with, again, what seem unnecessary and arbitrary changes, mostly visual in nature.
- In Microsoft's attempts to "simplify" things I find they've made more changes to file browsing than they should have. Sure "dumb" users don't have to understand the Windows file structure but that doesn't mean that it should be made so hard to get at (possibly a cue taken from the Mac or some the most recent Linux releases - Ubuntu for example). MS has further advanced their "if you don't need to see it; we won't show it" philosophy that has continued since Windows95. Oh, the area for user files has changed again, now: c:\users\<username> (an arbitrary change that will serve to confuse anyone expecting to find c:\documents and settings\<username>)
- Horsepower hog; making upgrade recommendations difficult. Better to wait to get Vista until you buy a new computer. If you decide to upgrade be ready to at least update RAM to 1Gb and Video to dedicated 128Mb card. (my testing on a 64Mb onboard shared RAM card has been slightly disappointing).

I'm still a Linux fan at heart and have been very impressed with Ubuntu 6.10. There's no need to give either Microsoft or Apple your money, IMO. Stick with Ubuntu, learn a bit of Linux, and support the Open Source community.

Ubuntu64 with OpenOffice (free). Windows Vista Ultimate with Office2007 Professional (aka, Ultimate) ($1000). It doesn't take a genius to figure out which is the better deal.

M

Using Vista because I'm paid to.

Or an OEM version of Vista Ultimate for $199:

My cost? Zero....and I have had the Ultimate Edition for 3 months now.

To all the people who say that they won't upgrade:

So, you're going to stick around with XP until MS changes their style? Are you still going to be using XP 20 years from now?

As far as I'm concerned, OS X is the only step forward.

And where the hell did they get the "Gadgets" idea? Very intuitive.

Don't wanna shell out the big bux for a full version of Vista (if you decide to go for it?)

Well guess what?

Here is how to get a clean install by just using a Vista Upgrade disk!
:D

With a support note quietly posted to its Web site, Microsoft confirmed what enthusiasts have long feared: Users who purchase Upgrade versions of Windows Vista will not be able to perform clean installs of the operating system. Instead, they will need to first install their previous OS and then upgrade in-place to Vista.

"This problem occurs because Windows Vista [Setup] does not check upgrade compliance," a support note on Microsoft's Web site reads. "Therefore, you cannot use an upgrade key to perform a clean installation of Windows Vista."

While this is sure to infuriate some users--and certainly, it contradicts information Microsoft provided me with last year--the reality is that upgrade installs of Windows Vista essentially wipe out the OS and perform an install that is very much like a clean install. The real problem here, therefore, will be the length of time it takes to install Vista using the Upgrade media: Though Vista often installs in about 30 minutes, previous versions often take twice as long.

UPDATE: I haven't tested this yet, as I don't have Vista Upgrade media to test, but I'm told that Microsoft's internal documentation does explain how to clean install Vista using an Upgrade version. It appears to be more of a workaround than a true clean install, however. Here's what it says.

1. Boot with the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD.

2. Click "Install Now."

3. Do not enter a Product Key When prompted.

4. When prompted, select the Vista product edition that you do have.

6. Install Vista normally.

7. Once the install is complete, restart the DVD-based Setup from within Windows Vista. Perform an in-place upgrade.

8. Enter your Product Key when prompted.

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37366

http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/ArticleID/95011/95011.html?Ad=1

Theoretically you can save a pile of money by doing it this way.

But then, you can probably save just as much by buying one of the OEM discs I posted about above. With no fussing with your previous OS.

Vista disolves what ever price advantage PC's had. Motherboards and PCI Express cards have to be built to Vista specifications and aren't cheap.

A Vista compatable computer is no longer a cost affordable computer.

What I like about Apple is they sell a whole system. No runaround because they are the hardware and software manufacture.

I am in Corporate Technology for a living and two co-workers installed Windows Vista Home and Pro the first day it was released on both of their personal laptops. They have nothing but issues since and are still dealing with bugs. One of them had to re-image his machine after the initial installation due to the fact that Vista is not compatible with Symantec's Anti-Virus.

After opening a ticket with Microsoft, it was suggested that he dump the Symantec Ant-Virus and purchase Microsoft ONE CARE Virus protection. You got it, more money in Bill's pocket. Easy fix.

Both of them are up and running now but the OS is Plagued with bugs and shortcomings..

Bottom line, if you are PC user, stick with XP for a while until MS comes out with a Service Pack 2 version of Vista.

If you are getting a new machine, strongly consider a MAC..

Cheers,

KiD

XP has a transparency option already, no need for a stinking vista.

MS already admitted or atleast critics that already got pre consumer editions of vista, said that most new functions for vista are based of what the Mac has had for 5 years.

Security is the only high point of Vista and if you do any p2ping or use so called 'cracked' games, you're fucked if running Vista. So I hear.

MS decided not to stop supporting XP in 2009 and extend support for it to 2011. I think I will be testing out some Macs in between to get the feel of them when all my desktops and laptops are of no use no more under XP os.
