Yesterday I stopped by this garage sale that had some nice end tables that I spotted while passing by. I got one of them and started looking around and spotted this tv they wanted a $1 for. They said it didn't work, then told me it would turn on and the sound worked perfect, but there was no picture. So, I figured what the hell, it's worth a dollar if it'll turn on. It's a 28 inch RCA tv, and it was made in 2002 so it's practically new. I dropped it off today at this guy's house that repairs tv's in his spare time, and he's going to charge $45-$50 to fix the problem, so I figure even with the repair cost I'm still getting a pretty good deal cause the tv was practically given away. Also, I spotted a 17 inch computer monitor that looks brand new, and they wanted $2 for it and let me have it for a $1, also. I plugged it up and it turns on, but I haven't hooked it up to see if it'll work yet. I figured, hell, it's worth buying for a dollar, the people said it works, so even if it doesn't work all I've lost is a dollar and I can chunk it in the landfill. That was the best garage sale yesterday I've been to in a long time.

I love vintage clothing and get great stuff by the pound rather than per item. Considering I have to get everything dry cleaned before I'll wear it...it ends up not being such a great bargain. But still cool and unusual stuff.

Update: Got the tv fixed for $55, and it's got a very clear picture! Also, I hooked the monitor up and it works perfectly! It's even clearer than the monitor I'm using!

A few years back while on vacation in the Outer Banks, I was searching for tiki mugs to expand my collection. Sparkie and I decided to check out this thrift shop as I was having no luck. As soon as we walked in, she spied one lone mug. She asked me if I wanted it, but I wasn't too sure as it was kinda ugly. She said fuck it and got it anyway. Paid fifty cents for it. Two little quarters. Turns out, that ugly little mug is a Tiki Bob from the early fifties, the creme de la creme of tiki mugs. I've seen it on Ebay go for well over two hundred bucks, but I ain't selling mine. Needless to say, he's not so ugly anymore

My Dads girlfriend bought a few music videos from a car boot sale once, then showed me & my ex what she'd bought and if I wanted any. She picked up the Van Hagar vid (whatever it's called, I forgot. Right here right now? no... ) and knowing I liked Van Halen (She's even seen my Got Roth? shirt! ) gave it to me. Not having a VHS player, I gave it to my ex to take home so we could watch it at hers. Not seen it since. Now that's a bargain.

Other than that, I guess a 25 cent brand new cassette tape found in a budget bin that I enjoy.

Turned out it is Volume 1, #1, and is worth several hundred bucks these days.

I'm stripping aluminum off a tent trailer I picked up cheap to make a toy-hauler (I got a great welder, Herrera's off Fern & Rosemead doing it) and take the stuff in for recycling and picked up a vintage PA horn, with a good driver, all original for $25 bucks or roughly $2 a pound.

I think I have a buyer for it at $400. My best score like that was for $5 I picked up a vintage Zildjian Istanbul 20" ride with a signature inside the bell that had been run over by the forklift truck. I got it home and hammered the bell with a sledge and the damn thing just went POP came out perfectly. I got over $1000 for it on Ebay about 5 years ago.

Another time at a yardsale for $7 I picked up an Optipot, it looks like a wah pedal but is actually just an optical photocell foot-operated controller for the Mutron BiPhase and sold it on Gbase for $175 plus shipping. At the same yardsale the remote footswitch enclosure was also there I paid $4.50 for it and sold it to Future Music in Hollywood for $35 cash plus a pair of nonworking pedals.. some Arion piece of crap.

I've had alot of exploits like that because I look for them.

One of the best bargains I got was a couple of days before Little Texan started this thread. Being a lazy fuck, I decided to write it today, 8 months later.

After moving in to me new home, I needed a TV, so I went and bought one. Having just moved out, however, I wasn't going for a Plasma or LCD. Expenses were many,m as it were. So I went for a flat screen old fashioned tube.

The problem is, there was only ONE flat screen TV there, it was slightly damaged on the edges and missing the remote. Meaning, it was hardly new. Probably used. And they weren't expecting any more tube TVs. Those were the last. After that, it would be all Plasma and LCD.

So, I told them I'd get the TV IF they lowered the price and throw in an universal remote. After all, the image was still grate and it had one of the the best sound I ever heard on a TV.

After a bit of haggling, they lowered the price substantially. Enough so that I could get a DVD player with XviD with the discount.

So, basically, they offered me a DVD player with the TV.

As for the lack of remote... I usually only watch cable. The box has its own remote. The TV automatically changes channel if I turn on the DVD player, then switches back to cable when I turn it off. Sound is controlled by an amplifier where everything is connected - the DVD, the cable, LaserDisc, VHS, computer, etc...

But still, the most awkward thing, is that the guy who sold me the TV looked EXACTLY like Bueno Bob. Man boobs, er... I mean, ruffled shirt and everything.

It must have been an alias. It's the only logical explanation.

Cheers! :bottle:

I worked at a Goodwill store in the 80's. Didn't pay worth shit, but some of the stuff I picked up in the process made up for it.

Sometimes it's amazing what kind of vinyl people will just throw away. Picked up some vintage albums there at 50 cents each, minus whatever my employee discount was. Some original Creedence albums, the long out of print debut album by Country Joe and the Fish (featuring the original "Feel Like I'm Fixing to Die Rag")

But the biggest score was when this bunch of old Elvis 45's and EP's came in. The EP's have been out of print since the 1950's. All mint condition.

I said "Don't even bother putting these in the bin. I'm taking every last one of them."

They put a price tag of 1.99 each on them, which was 10 times what any other 45 cost there, but a ridiculous steal for such collectible stuff.

I've seen them go for as low as $10/ each on ebay or gemm.com but that's still 5 times more than I paid for them.

They probably were worth more when turntables were still a competing format and before the entire Elvis catalog had been released on CD in 666 different ways.

But what the fuck, they were still a great deal.

A 1979 Lamborginihi Countach 400S for $20,000. One aluminum body panel needed repair and we overhauled the engine in our shop. She runs like a top now and the car is worth $100,000 easy. It's all original including the six Weber carburators.

Very well built cars actually but they were built in a tractor factory so they should be.

A 1933 A-65 Johnson outboard motor. The owner thought it was junk. I tore into it and found it had very little running time since the original crosshatch marks were still visiable on the cylendar sleeves. Solidified oil had froze the motor, not rust.

I paid $10 for the motor and she runs great now. All I had to do was change the spark plug wires and gaskets.

You can run the exhaust under water for quiet running or run it straight out of the cylendars for power. The gas tank has a sight glass on it and it runs a big three bladed brass prop.

I see these motors restored like mine with new grips and decals go for $1,000 on Ebay. The original price in 1933 was $135 so it was an expensive motor then.

My Lambo came from Florida not Wyoming. It sat for years and then some idiot decided to fire it up without servicing the cooling system and some of the cylendar sleeves went loose.

The company I work for rebuilds airplane engines which are simular to a Lambo V-12. We resleeved it. There actually is an industry where people buy older exotic cars and fix them up. The thing is you need a pretty good machine shop in house to make a go of it.

Rich fucks buy these cars, ruin them and sell them cheap. It's how I get my cars. It's probably safe to say I have the only white Lamborgihni in the state. Mine has the spoiler on the back which was a $8,000 accessory in 1979.

The leather and interior are pristine. Restoring the leather work in some of these Italian cars is the real nightmare.

House for 70k two days prior to trustee (foreclosure) sale, sold for 140 one week later, but had to file suit against the fuckin title company prior to cashing out...

Also a number of others with much larger numbers, but this was the simplest, quickest "flop".

By far the most aesthetically extreme and provocative model Lambo built -- my personal favorite, looks wise -- just 41inches high! Driveability is another story altogether, as I'm sure you are well aware...

I am on the hunt for a mid 90's rwd Diablo, which I feel takes 2nd place behind the Countach's appearance, but doesn't beat the shit out of you on a full-day drive.

A sweet finders fee can be arranged for any solid leads(?)

It's no Ferrari Enzo by any means. It was built by a guy who made tractors and drove tractors all day. Mr. Lamborghini was a farmer and tractor specialist. He became one of the richest men in Italy making and selling farm equipment.

I come from a construction background so I'm used to heavy equipment and the old Lamborghinis are just that, a fucking monster that goes fast.

They are built extremly well but you are right, driving one; especially in town is a workout. I love them and the cars will be icons for years to come. I still think the Lambo V-12 is one of the sweetest sounding engines on the planet.

I would search Flordia for your Lamborghini. You would think California would be a good market but Florida is better. I can tell you they have lots of Diablos of variouse kinds. Countachs are getting harder to find because they have either been tottaly wreaked or are in someone's collection.

Ferrari parts are more widely available but I find a lot of Ferrari's boring.

There was a Lamborghini in the driveway of a mobile home about twenty miles from here earlier in the summer. Had weeds growing up from under it. It hadn't been moved in at least six months cuz the weeds were almost waist high. I don't remember if it was a Countach or a Diablo, but it appeared to be the real deal (not a kit.) I took a pic of it and either myself or Tiki posted it in here somewhere. I wish I knew the story behind it.

Digging this back up to share with everyone my personal best bargain buy of the year (maybe ever). I bought two full sets of golf clubs this morning at a garage sale for $5! This cassette of "Fair Warning" that I bought at an outdoor flea market outside of Cherry Pt, NC back in 1998 was the best bargain I ever had. The damn thing only cost $1, was beat up all to hell, yet it still sounded excellent. It outlasted all of these shitty premium digi-logic cassettes that had in my collection.

Oh yeah, one time I was at a adult club and licked a strippers tit. And the best thing was, they didn't kick me out! So I guess you could consider that a bargain.

I would say the woods are about $15 a piece just by the picture. Not sure on the irons. All in all, worth more than $5. Nice shopping.
