View Full Version : Loverboy

Seems as though you either loved 'em or hated 'em. If the latter, they were seen as a boy band.
All albums have great tracks, but Keep It Up remains my favorite because it's the most consistent.

Although, looking back, they were not THAT bad...

But in the 80's, anyone who was into hard rock and metal HATED queer Loverboy...

Nah, Loverboy could actually write their own tunes and play their own instruments, so right there they're too talented to be considered a boy band...

Back in the day, it WAS totally uncool to say you liked Loverboy, agreed. But they wrote some good stuff. Not great...nothing earth- shattering, but they did manage to put out a half dozen or so top 40 hits in the space of a few years.

Hey, fuck it, I'll admit it...Hot Girls In Love was on the radio the other day, and I turned it up. Still better than 99% of the shit out there on contemporary top 40 radio.

Not a fan but not the worst band I ever heard either.

Seems the bass player Scott Smith took the bass thing literally and a few years back, while on a fishing trip went swimmin' with the fishes himself. RIP.

Which is probably why they considered LB to be an adult age boy band.

If that stuff can even be considered contemporary. Today's stuff, if labeled contemporary, is an insult to the former contemporary of our days!

Loverboy was HUGE up here in the early 80's. I bought their first two albums, and don't have any don't have any problem admitting that I still listen to them once a year or so.

It was a truly Canadian product. As Canada has always had a mixture of US and European influences, that's pretty much what Loverboy was.

West coast hard rock meets Euro synth pop, but it was well done in the beginning.

Just like Foreigner though, they pretty much jumped the shark with the third album.

It's a safe bet we'll never hear the likes of Cannibal Corpse covering "Hot Girls In Love" on a Loverboy tribute album.

I'd much rather listen to an endless loop of Loverboy than 60 full seconds of anything by Cannible Corpse. Now that music is complete shit.

I'm not a Cannibal Corpse fan (although I do like a lot of bands that get lumped in with them...) But I'd take Cannibal Coprse over Loverboy any day of the week.

They certainly had their time.
When Paul Dean and Matt Frenette were with Streetheart they were great.

I was in San Fran when their Bass Player fell off his yaht outside the SF Bay.

Streetheart! I have 83's, what was it "dancing with danger."
Obviously both ex-Loverboy members were already in their new band, but "dancing with danger" is still a great cassette to listen to from time to time.

WACF
03-06-2007, 02:51 PM
Fuck yeah...Dancing With Danger was reallly good...one of my favorite Streetheart lps.

After their self titled 82 LP got some attention down south they tagged Spencer Proffer to produce/engineer Dancing With Danger. I think he did a shitty job though on capturing their sound, the drum sound sucked IMO...but he polished the songs quite nicely...some of their strongest songwriting.

Dancing had a lot of killer tunes on it...due to money problems and bad managment they filed for bandrupcy in 84.
I think that album would of been the one.

If you wanna hear both Dean and Frennette on a Streetheart tune look for the songs Action, Pressure or Under My Thumb of their first album.
Dean left shortly after that one came out...Frennette left a year later to help form Loverboy.

Steve Savicki

Come to think of it, I don't recall a single hum dinger on "dancing."

He still plays Winnipeg 2-3 times per year.
Spencer Proffer did the same thing to Kick Axe by 1986. Took their money and fucked them over.

Kick Axe...another band that died an early death.

Kenny Shields was a local boy so we got alot of Streetheart shows back in the day.

My first concert...Helix was supposed to open but never showed so we got an extra long Streetheart show.

There was a tune by Coverboy called Teenage Overdose / One Foot in Hell that I remember having a catchy hook.

But I can totally visiualize Savicki in a red headband and parachute pants strumming his wilson tennis racket in front of his bedroom mirror circa. 1982.

I guess Loverboy and CVH do have one thing in common.
