Windows XP to be retired in 2008
Windows XP will stop being available on new PCs from the end of January 2008.

Microsoft is keeping to a plan to stop selling the operating system even though surveys show a lukewarm response to Windows Vista among consumers.

A poll by US market research firm Harris Interactive found that only 10% of those questioned were planning to upgrade to Vista in the near future.

All versions of XP, including those made for media centre or tablet PCs, are affected by the decision.

System shock

Microsoft has confirmed that from 31 January 2008 large PC makers, such as Dell, HP and Toshiba, will no longer be able to buy licences for the software so they can install it on new machines.

Windows XP is being retired to make way for Windows Vista, the consumer editions of which were launched in Europe on 30 January.

However, a poll released in early April suggests that Vista has yet to win over significant numbers of potential customers.

The study of 2,223 web-using Americans found that although 87% had heard of the operating system only 12% of those who knew of it were planning to install it.

While the survey did find that some people waited for Vista before buying a PC, 60% said its appearance had no effect on their spending plans.

It also found that 79% of those questioned were using Windows XP on their home PC.

Robert Epstein, Microsoft's european spokesman on Windows licencing, said: "There's no significant change with XP compared with how we have done it with other operating systems."

He added that PC makers could get hold of licences until 2009 if they bought them from third-party suppliers rather than Microsoft.

Mr Epstein said withdrawing XP licences had no implications for long-term technical support for the product.

"This is purely about availability of brand new licences for brand new machines," he said. "We'll continue to support XP for some considerable time."

Microsoft has a well-established program that governs the lifecycle of its products and how long they have before licences stop being offered or support is withdrawn.

Upgrade upheaval

In related news, the software firm has reminded those who tested early versions of Windows Vista that the software will stop working on 1 June.

Millions of people downloaded and installed pre-release versions of Vista to see what the software was like and to help Microsoft fine tune the finished product.

However, these early "release candidate" editions of Vista had a limited life.

"So customers need to decide if they want to move to Windows Vista or back to Windows XP if they have test versions of Windows Vista on their PCs," said Cori Hartje, director of Microsoft's genuine software initiative, in a statement.

The pre-released versions of Vista do not allow users to rollback to earlier versions of Windows installed on a PC which means that people will must re-install either their old operating system or upgrade to a full version of Vista.

In a further complication, if users choose to upgrade to Vista from a release candidate they must use a full and final version of the Ultimate edition of the software rather than a cheaper "upgrade" edition.

Vista is available in six separate versions - three for home users, two for businesses and one for emerging markets.

This is a new low, even for MicroShaft. And it's a bad time for them to be making such a fascist decision, given the fact that Macs can now run Windows software, and Linux has advanced to the point where there is very little that Windows can do better....

I had a free (legal) copy of Vista's "Ultimate" edition (the one with the $400 price tag) offered to me. I turned it down, because I refuse to deal with the fascist RIAA driven Digital "Rights" Management bullshit.

Guess I could have sold it on e bay, but oh well......

Bill Gates, do you hear the Penguin footsteps??

Fuck Micro$haft and Windows, I've already made the jump to Linux! I'm 100% Micro$haft-free now...running Ubuntu Linux and using the Firefox web browser, plus I've got a whole host of free applications that take the place of Micro$haft apps that cost an arm and a leg! Open source rules!

VIVA LA MANDRIVA! I run the latest version on my laptop, and have Ubuntu sitting in the wings. I've got this pimped-out P4 battlerig I've been building in my shop, and an MCSE acquaintence of mine gave me an 8-in-1 final RTM boot install DVD of Vista - IT BLOWS DEAD BEAR. I've got gigs of RAM stuffed into this thing, a terabyte of drive storage (and 10K SATA drives, at that!), and the system has epileptic seizures over things as small as video drivers and refresh rates. All Billy G. had his marauding band of cyberthugs do is fuck with the kernel, then pirate the best plug-ins and applets from OS X and every flavor of Linux that's available for public release. 75% of the desktop support calls I deal with are MicroShaft related. I hope that fucker dies destitute.:wow2: :mad2:

Heh...color me crazy but I have XP tweaked out enough I have no problems.

I have not made the jump to Linux because there is too much stuff out there that cannot be run on Linux yet that I need.

Someday...but not yet...not yet...

Ubuntu 7.04 drops later this month, and it's looking pretty sweet so far. If it lives up to expectations, I doubt I'll be using Windows at home anymore at all.

Me too. Mine runs smooth as silk. It took a while, but I'm extremely happy. Especially since I switched to Firefox. IE was really the only thing that caused problems.

Firefox is certainly a good start. Thunderbird for e mail would be a good move as well.

That said, if you have 2 hard drives, a decent amount of space on one drive, maybe an old drive sitting around collecting dust that you replaced with a larger one, it would cost you nothing to download Linux and set up your PC as a dual boot system.

FORD - I'm in the process of setting up an XP/Vista/Ubuntu/Solaris quad boot on the Battlerig. I'll let you know in a week or so how it turns out. My squaw just ran around the house Thursday, installing the latest Firefox 2.0.0.3 release on everything with an OS. Pretty fuckin' sweet. :D I love how it's 10 times more crash-proof than IE (damn Gates to Hell for embedding it in the OS kernel), and you can skin the living shit out of it. :D

I have used Firefox and Thunderbird for quite sometime.

Before that I used Netscape and Netscape mail.

I have always hated Outlook and IE.

XP has never given me any problems. I skimmed the article but I did not see anywhere that they will not support XP once it is retired. Just not sell it ny longer. (If I missed that, sorry) The Vista upgrade just does not make since to me as they have not released an Office Suite product made on the same platform as Vista.

My next notebook will probably be an Apple although I do have two co-workers who have installed Vista and have ZERO complaints besides the fact it does not play nice wth Symantec ant-virus software.

Has anyone installed Vista and it has just been horrible? Curious?

I was thinking of getting Vista. But I'm waitin' until all the program stuff sorts itself out.

If I get another desktop, it will be Apple though...

I'm assuming they'll support it for sometime after, though I already notice the updates are less frequent.

And Kid, isn't Office 2007 Vista compatible?

Another recommendation for those of you already using Linux.

http://www.getautomatix.com/

So far, this tool is only packaged for the Debian based distros (Mepis, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc.) but as the popularity catches on, I wouldn't be surprised if the .rpm based distros (Fedora, SuSe, Mandriva, etc.) get their own versions.

What automatix does is rounds up all of those "unofficial" repositories containing the codecs and other cool shit that the RIAA nazis and Bill Gates don't want Linux users to have. Just install their package tool and then run down the list, clicking all the cool shit you want.

One thing you will see on the list is "Swiftfox". This is a modified build of Firefox optimized for your specific CPU, and you will notice the difference. Looks exactly like Firefox, just runs faster. Sorry, no Windows or Mac version of this one yet.

And Just in case you were wondering, Jesus DOES endorse Linux!

All that is really happening at the moment is MicroShaft is going to stop selling the OEM versions to manufacturers, however you will still be able to buy OEM versions from independent third-party vendors for awhile after that.

This really isn't a big deal. You can't get Windows 95 on a new computer anymore. It's just like cars. I wish Chevrolet would make a few more 1969 Corvettes, but if I want one, I have to buy a used one.

I bought an eMac to do digital photography on. I liked the opperating system so much I haven't purchased a PC since. Now my office runs on iMac's and miniMac's. I have a MacBook laptop. I couldn't be happier.

Apple has been a great company to deal with. I've never had a virus or a system crash. I get security updates for free from Apple.

The more I use iWork instead on MS Office now. I love iCal and the Address Book for keeping my schedual and business/personal contacts organized.

My sister in law that hates computers is doing all sorts of stuff on her new iMac. She's an addict now. Apple is going to keep seliing more computers . For the average Joe, they now are more cost effective and easier to use than PC's. Vista needs the high end, expensive video and audio cards to work, eliminating any cost advantage PC's use to have.

As long as Apple is decent to deal with, it's actually nice to have the buch stop with them because they made the hardware and software. No more being ping ponged between hardware manufacturers and software manufacturers.

I curse M$ on a daily basis but XP is the best OS they ever came up with.

As far as the MAC virus argument anecdotally I don't know any M$ user that has been significantly damaged by a virus in the last 5 years.

I've had fr more problems with anti virus or security software stopping me do stuff than any virus.

To me it's similar to the 'war on terror'
