Great list. I had to Google Johnny Thunder though.. Not familiar with the New York Dolls. Vinnie was cool with KISS. Never heard too much from the Vinnie Vincent Invasion. Do you play? If so, do you have a myspace site or somewhere I can listen to your stuff? I respect all styles of playing. SOME people around here talk crap about there playing, but they don't have a site for us to listen to their music. I think i'm the only one who has put a couple of places to hear my stuff. In my opinion, the 80's guitar players just kicks the shit out of players in any era. Of course i'm biased, I came of age in that era. White Lion had some songs on the cheezy side, but Vito's solo's were 2nd to none. Loved Warren's playing too, and his first name sounds kinda cool too. I wonder why?

In my opinion, Page was pretty sloppy live. He was awesome in the studio though.... The music that I put on this web-site, the vocals are influenced by GFR. Our Drummer/Singer loved GFR. "Shinin' On" was on our set-list.

Yep, probably the first band to really pave the way for using duel leads and harmony playing that became such a stock of metal later on. Priest and Maiden did it best, and really standardized it, but Lizzy paved the way.

I used to think that way too.

Thin Lizzy were great pioneers and Priest and Maiden do have incredible partnerships, but...

...now I think King Crimson do the two guitar thing on a different level to everyone else. It`s not all doubled up riffs and twin harmonys but two interlocking parts that make no sense without each other with mindblowing arrangements and amazing...erm..."discipline". It must have been a lot of work for Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew (two guitarists who are equally famous for thier individual work) to get that stuff so tight, to the point where entire songs would consist of two intricately weaving guitar parts.

Anyone interested in some HOT guitar work should check out "Discipline", "The construKction of light", "The power to believe" or the excellent live "Absent lovers".

Yeah!

Fripp said that Belew, Levin and Bruford were so good that he felt almost like a spare part in his own band.

"Discipline" is an awesome record and one that too few people have heard.

What's the name of your big time band? And what web-site can we hear your music, so we can compare your playing to these boring players that you don't like.:)

Are you a total dope?Let's take a survey of the amount of people in this post with platinum albums.Wait no one has a platnum album in this forum,or is even in a band,or even worse can even play guitar(which i actually can thank you as a hobby of course). But we can put forth an opinion of who we like ,and or dislike, can't we.But the problem is with you and your opinion stiffleing buddy.Didn't he just reply to a post of Clapton being boring just like I originally did?(contridiction)Boy he better have a web site highlighting his shredding. So next time he farts and your head pops out his ass, remember that old saying only 2 things come from texas steers and ******,and you don't look like a steer.Good Day

I don't play guitar, so this definately a "favourite" lists rather than a "best", which I am not qualified to discuss.

For me, a guitar player has to maintain my interest over a decent amount of time and always excite me.

1) Tony Iommi (the riffs, the thickness of the sound, the groove and heaviness. No frills, just kills)
2) Dimebag. (bought Vulgar dialay of Power the day it came out, a it crushed me. Someone who actually pushed extreme metal forward and combined groove, melody AND heaviness, which is a rare thing)
3) Jeff Beck (really gotten into his back catalogue after joining this site a year or so ago, and realising how unbelievable his music is)
4) Slash (as soon as he plays, you know it's him.)
5) Jake E Lee. (Love his Ozzy-era and Badlands is one of my favourite bands. Under-appreciated, in my opinion.)

Other people I love: Schenker, Randy Rhoades, Dave Mustaine, Angus Young, James Hetfield just for the sheer asskickin riffs on the first five records), Hendrix, Page, Nugent, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Could go on and on about players I like a lot, but there's only a few who constantly make me smile

I'd have to say...

1) Ed (in his prime...for the obvious reasons)
2) Brian May (for his tone)
3) Tony Iommi (for inventing metal, and opening the door for do many others)
4) Pete Townshend (for his compositional skills)
5) Slash (cos he's so damn cool rather than his technical ability. Plus he writes a catchy solo)

If I was allowed a 6th...Rory...

"Discipline" is an awesome record and one that too few people have heard.

It's almost like a concept record that noone in the band was conceptualizing....the first time I heard it was during a road trip to Sebastian Inlet (surfing). Think A1A, lots of krypto weed, and beer. After like the third or fourth I heard Belew go, "this is a dangerous place" , I asked the pot-addled driver who the band was. He said it was King Crimson, and he wasn't going to play any more of my shitty metal tapes or something.

Sounds pretty cool. I played in a blues/jazz type band (never this good though), so I can appreciate this stuff. Not the kind of music to listen to while tired and driving. Thanks Ford. Is this at a church?

Looks like it. And it wouldn't be unusual for Phil Keaggy to be playing in a church, though I'm not sure about the other guys' religious beliefs.

4. Paul Gilbert
5. Al Di Meola
