FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) - The nine U.S. soldiers killed and 20 wounded when a truck bomb exploded next to their patrol base in Iraq were paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division, the division said Tuesday.

Maj. Tom Earnhardt, a spokesman for the division at Fort Bragg, said it was the deadliest attack the division had faced since the Iraq war began.

It also was the single deadliest attack on ground forces since Dec. 1, 2005, when a roadside bomb killed 10 Marines and wounded 11 on a foot patrol near Fallujah. An insurgent group that includes al-Qaida in Iraq claimed responsibility, according to an Internet-posted statement Tuesday.

The soldiers were members of the 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, Earnhardt said. A civilian interpreter was also wounded in Monday's explosion.

``They were inside the building,'' Earnhardt said. ``Fifteen of the wounded were superficial and they were treated on the spot and returned to duty. Five were evacuated to a military hospital, but none of the five have life-threatening injuries.''

The identities of the soldiers were not immediately released.

Earnhardt said Tuesday that their families were still being notified. The 82nd Division, which has about two-thirds of its soldiers deployed, must assemble nine notification teams and prepare to counsel families and assign each a casualty assistance officer, he said.

A memorial service will be held in May at the base, about 70 miles south of Raleigh, Earnhardt said.

The paratroopers' unit deployed in August to Iraq. In all, the division has four brigade combat teams in Iraq or Afghanistan, plus a supply brigade in Iraq and an aviation brigade split between Iraq and Afghanistan.

Of the roughly 18,000 paratroopers in the division, only about 6,000 remain at Fort Bragg, and 3,500 of those are scheduled to deploy to Iraq early this summer.

The deaths raised to 85 the number of U.S. service members killed in Iraq in April, making it the deadliest month for American troops since December, when 112 died.

That was a crazy scene, I'm sure. News reports I've seen on this described two trucks, one right after the other, plowing into the building and exploding. There was also a group, forgot who, claiming responsibility and bragging, "Allah has taught us new methods to create bombs and kill soldiers."

What a shit storm over there.

My heart goes out to my Airborne brothers and their families.

Got to get more names to put on the Iraq War Memorial in Washington DC. We can't let the Vietnam War Memorial have all the glory.

The country is full of ordinance. Some of the bombs they put in the roads are three 155mm artillary shells wired together! That will fucking blow a tank let alone a Humvee.

Like in Vietnam, the enemy is creative and willing to wait us out for how long it takes. Will we tolerate this for a decade like in Vietnam or longer?

Ooops! We did it again. What fucking morons.

Ooops! We did it again. What fucking morons. Having the US military play a "cop walking the beat" role in Dodge City, Iraq is no way to carry on over there.

Not enough manpower to do what they want, in theory.

Wasting our valuable time. Let the assholes fend for themselves...Then when they take over proper, fuck everything up.
Done.

U.S. Announces 9 Troop Deaths in Iraq (on Friday)

By KIM GAMEL
Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD (AP) -- A car bomb exploded Saturday in the Shiite holy city of Karbala as the streets were packed with people heading for evening prayers, killing at least 58 and wounding scores near some of the country's most sacred shrines. Separately, the U.S. military announced the deaths of nine American troops, including three killed Saturday in a single roadside bombing outside Baghdad.

With black smoke clogging the skies above Karbala, angry crowds hurled stones at police and later stormed the provincial governor's house, accusing authorities of failing to protect them from the unrelenting bombings usually blamed on Sunni insurgents. It was the second car bomb to strike the city's central area in two weeks.

...

The Americans killed in Iraq included five who died in fighting Friday in Anbar province, three killed when a roadside bomb struck their patrol southeast of Baghdad and one killed in a separate roadside bombing south of the capital.

The deaths raised to 99 the number of members of the U.S. military who have died this month and at least 3,346 who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
