Actually, when Sarge returned, I was going to ask if I could have my very own sub-forum off this main forum for all female artists since his friend Dickface McSlapnuts see,s to disapprove of women as singers at least (http://rotharmy.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=308&highlight=savicki , post #15.)
Well, the next artist I was going to bring up was Musical Youth:
<center>http://www.musicalyouth.net/images/discs/MY-1.jpg</center>
I'd call them the British New Edition because that's kind of what they were... 5 young blacks coming out in the early 80's.
They hit it with "pass the dutchie", but I personally thought "shantytown" and the dance track "she's trouble" were the best they did.

Thanks, Bob?

Anyways, the next artist for the day is Kim Wilde. Anyone remember those kids in America?
"Backseat driver" remains my favorite track and she remained integral up through '86 even when switching labels from EMI to MCA.
Her remake of The Supreme's "Keep Me Hangin' On", had this new agey feel, but I remember tricking my dad into thinking the Supreme's actually did Kim's version with 80's synths!

By '88's "get close", the arrangements and music were gone.
I'm not sure if she's still performing or not.

While I don't agree with most of your taste in music (and as you'll recall, some of it I'm fairly well knowledgable about), when it comes to posting what you want where you want, I'll defend that any day of the week. Twice on Sunday.

I'd imagine there gets to a point in most people's careers when they have to look at the prospect of doing new music and saying to themselves "...is it REALLY worth trying anymore?", and simply move on to other shit if the answers no...

Today's artist is the great Milli Vanilli.
You know, I never knew why the public felt pressured for Arista records to refund a dollar for the cassette, $2 for the CD. If you liked the music enough to buy the album BEFORE Rob & Fabrice were exposed, what makes the tunes sound any different? It's the same prerecorded music.
Reminds me of Mulan- "You trusted Ping. Why would Mulan be any different?"

Exactly- which is why today's topic is classic-tune-makeovers-turned-rap.
I'm actually amazed that no Van Halen tune, Roth, Hagar, or Cherone, has been incorporated into today's rap (at least not that I know of.)
My co-worker gets all mad at the Supertramp remake ("Take a look at my girlfriend.") Which rapper started all this incorporating anyways?

Actually I have an undated, I would presume mid-80's cassette by a certain ___ Lonzo that incorporated George Clinton's Bow-wow-wow-yippee-yo-yippie-yay in the "solo", if it's called that.

Today's artist are The New Seekers. Reason is their version of "Pinball Wizard" is much better than the original Who's.
To me, that song was never classic rock material and if so, The Seekers did one better with their pop arrangements especially when backed up with "see me feel me" (The entire track is titled "Pinball Wizard-See Me Feel Me.)

<center>http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dre700/e769/e76934nz9oa.jpg</center> whose songwriter, Jack Ponti, spawned lead singer Bon Jovi. I don't know the story directly, but I've read on the net the Ponti taught Bongiovi how to song write. True, as demonstrated by the album's second track "shot through the heart." The piano intro sounds like "runaway."
However, "hot nights" remains my favorite track off of the album "when midnight comes" back from '85.

In the meantime, I feel the urge to post two artists for today. Reason is, the band Urgent also has the "urg" letter combo like "Surgin'" and to me, something about borh '85 albums is similar.
<center>http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/pic200/drp000/p087/p08746e8qam.jpg</center>
I believe the reviews and I agree at least for the debut: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:kpfqxql5ldje
"Michael, Don, and Steve Kehr rose from the East Coast in the mid-'80s, fronting Urgent, an album rock quintet who released two LPs of discerning quality but limited panache. Rounding out the group was bassist Klyph Black, who worked with Nikki Buzz in Vendetta, and Yul Vaz on drums. The legendary luminaries Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson produced and wrote four songs for Urgent's debut, aptly christened Cast the First Stone. Considering the loud rock pedigree of the personnel, the disc surprisingly resembled Canadian AOR (Honeymoon Suite, Loverboy), and strong first single "Running Back" briefly hoofed FM radio. Two years later, in 1987, Thinking Out Loud appeared. Featuring three songs Urgent co-wrote with Hunter and Ronson, the record sank like a stone." - Doug Stone
<center>http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/pic200/drp000/p087/p08745t25hh.jpg</center>
http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:hcfwxqu5ldae
Also by Doug Stone - "Obscure East Coaster quintet featuring triplets hits the airwaves full-sprint with "Running Back," [1]an ace cut of album rock which, like much of this debut, relies too heavily on keyboards to be taken seriously outside of the big '80s. Urgent joins Cheap Trick, Triumph, and countless others with yet another ditty dubbed "Say Goodbye,"[2] but at least it's a nice slice. The Biblical title track[3] is also a cool keeper, but something of a misnomer as this hot wax corrals morally ambiguous selections about fighting off a buddy's broad, nailing every girl in sight, and then wanting to be the reason she tells the boys no.[10] Such are the ways of shop-worn love. Mick Ronson and Ian Hunter, the Gilbert & Sullivan of deletion, produce and contribute, but the band actually does better without them, not surprising considering Hunter felt the '80s were a wash (thus the profit-palming yuppie pop of "Pay Up"[5]). Not much danger of running across this tidbit, but, if so, snag it for the aforementioned songs."

11 Running Back #2

I agree with the review, the first three tracks, "pay up" and "tell the boys no" are the best ones. If you do happen to run across a cassette either in a used store, or cut-out budget bin, yeah, pick it up for half the songs there.

I thought the lack of responses was due to everyone running out to the used cassette store to look for half of the albums' songs by a band nobody cares about on an archaic medium .

No, it's because they have to spend so much time fast forwarding over sons they don't like :)

I meant songs, not sons...

Today's artist will be the first black country singer I heard of:
<center>http://www.bigaldowning.com/bilder/albw.jpg</center>
I have http://www.bigaldowning.com/discography/pics/014.jpg
1. Mr Jones
2. Touch Me
3. Bring It On Home
4. We Can Only Say Goodbye
5. Darlene
6. It Takes Love
7. Does He Know About Me
8. Beer Drinkin' People
9. Just Strangers
10. I'll Be Loving You

Haven't played it in awhile, but I remember it starts out with the depressing "Mr. Jones" and "It takes love" and "beer drinkin' people" are perky uptempo tracks that I suppose one could country dance to.
I seem to recall "I'll be loving you" as a ballad to end the album with.
Sadly, I didn't know he passed away until I visited his page: http://www.bigaldowning.com/ .

The more country, the better. That's why it's called "country."

I have that 1986 compilation "Looser than clams" and the first four tracks prove his 70's track from "idiots on a miniature golf course" were the best. "Mutatis Mutandis" later on in the 80's isn't bad, but doesn't have the kick his debut did.

Rift's music both challenges and irritates, insults and amuses. His songs are musical mud pies lobbed at the mainstream market, fragmentation ear-bombs set in often bizarre meters with arrangements that both soothe and sear.

I have no problem with country music, it's just when it has too much twang it almost becomes generic, like a parody of itself.

Definitely unique, but not very medlodic.

Ahh, in an anti-Roth mood, or more accurately, feelin' tha Motown sound. I was going to save the best for last, but this thread seems to be neverending, so let's get this over with- my favorite Motown album:
<center>http://www.lp-cd.de/5/E544_01.jpg</center>
<center>http://www.lp-cd.de/5/E544_02.jpg</center>
The album is not consistent, but three songs are among my favorites:
<center>http://www.vinyltap.co.uk/gallery/lu/lushuoyl5278148699750650.jpg</center>
That is not one of them, my faves are:

Be there for Me
Attention Addict
and Payback

Flex and Pretty Poison are not as medodic, but up-paced and dancable.

For You is a pretty way to end the album.

The rest aren't necessarily good, but not bad either.

"Back in the city" from '84 and "So far so good" from '86 are my favorite dance tracks... the rest all in 2nd places somewhere down the line.
I guess "Don't turn your back" from '85 could place first as well.
