Just curious who is running Microsoft Vista if anyone on this board? I had to purchase a new laptop for my Media Room and I ended up going with a HP Pavilian with Vista Home Premium Loaded and it runs great. I had heard the nightmares but have experienced no issues. It is actually quite good and I prefer it to XP at this point. It runs fast and has a lot of cool features.

Just curious if anyone else is using it.

btw: I am not out to start a Vista versus Mac OS war. I wanted a MAC 17" notebook but for an apples to apples machine, it was more than twice the price with the software I needed than the HP Pavilion 17" Notebook I purchased.

Cheers,

KiD

OS X for life. Sorry. Not a war, just my choice.

17 inch laptop? Might as well be called portable desktops.

Vista is just a bad copy of OS X. Microsoft even managed to copy the dumb chess game Apple gives you.

The speech capabilities on the chess game are pretty sweet, though :D

Wouldn't be caught dead with a Vista, so I'm getting along with the XP...

I'm using Vista Enterprise on my work laptop and have had a few problems. There were definitely some driver issues early on but this was mostly Dell's problem and was quickly resolved.
I've had some application compatibility problems, especially with one of the VPN clients I'm required to use for business connectivity (Nortel client specifically). Older applications continue to cause problems, especially those that don't properly recognize a user as a machine administrator. I have one business app that just won't run for me unless I'm logged in directly as the local adminstrator user (I've tried compatibility mode and the app still just won't work). Frustrating, but since I also run WinXP in a virtual machine it's not a real issue, yet.
I'm also finding that activity on the system, basically at rest, interfere's with music playback (too may pauses for loading for my liking) and with my MAME emulator, which makes playing those old, classic, games a little frustrating. This problem I'm sure I can work out once I'm ready to start tweaking, but right now I'm testing the OS for eventual deployment in my department and need to work with it "as is" to find all the problems.
Overall, I'm happy with it but can't wait until I can customize the build to eliminate some of the Aero features I can't stand. Eventually, I'll use Vista in a mode that more closely resembles XP as I just can't stand some of the cosmetic changes they've made to the Windows experience. I hate all the menu changes in the OS and in Office2007.
I'm still not a huge Windows fan, I use it because it pays the bills (I'm a network/system administrator with an MCSE certification), and with the excessive price tag for the full Vista experience I'm only recommending to people that they get Vista bundled with a new machine. I would not suggest upgrading from WindowsXP as the problems you'll encounter will certainly outway any benefits.

M

With all that said I still recommend Mac and Linux, when asked. Macs for those with less computer knowledge; Linux for those with more.

I know it is not a war but I did not want anyone to think I was touting Vista as being superior to the MAC. I deal with a lot of media and need the 17" Screen. I really wanted the Mac Book Pro 17" but all said and done it was $3,500.00 for the price of admission. I went to the Apple store and did my research and really liked the machine.

My Company is a partner with HP so we have an employee purchase plan so I got a 17" Pavillion Notebook Loaded (Intel Dual Core, 2MB of Ram, 200GB HD, etc) for $1350.00 all said and done.

I mean I could justity spending maybe $1000.00 more for the Mac but $3,500.00 is just too much for me to justify on a computer. Now I have my eye on the 57" reissue Gold Top Les Paul I have been wanting with the extra $2,000.00 plus I saved..

Cheers,

KiD

Recently heard that Michael Dell (CEO of Dell computers) refuses to use Vista and now runs only Linux on his personal laptop.

Take that "endorsement" how ever you want........

Whatever you do, press your windows key & tab to flick between windows :) I've flicked through Vista on my Bro in laws new laptop, it's pretty swish. Being incompatible with a lot of games etc at the mo, it wouldn't be for me...

Yeah, and Dell still offers XP on new systems.

Die, vista.

I enjoy using Macs, but when it comes time to buy, I can never justify the cost. Unless I worked with graphics or video for a living, just don't see the point of spending the extra $$$ on a computer.

I have a 7 year old dell that still runs great, starting to explore Linux. Just seems like these computer and software companies rip you off. With the cost of Microsoft's software, and Apple's hardware, just seems much.

Maybe I'm just cheap when it comes to computers, have no qualms about dropping 5K on modding the SRT lol

We are beta testing Vista at my work (in preperation of a massive migration) and have some minor bugs here and there. The biggest issue so far has been with the print spooler.

Yea, I had some quirks with a music program I run (SlimServer) but once I worked through it, it has been flawless.

I also dig the fact that the MS Updates load when you shut the machine down. Nothing irritates me more than booting up in XP and have an Update Alert Flag you so you download and then have to restart your machine. That is definitely a feature I have enjoyed.

Knock on wood, but so far my experience with Vista has been a great one.
