Evangelical leader was found in his university office

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell — founder of the Moral Majority and the face of the religious right in the 1980s — died Tuesday after being found unconscious in his office, a Liberty University executive said.

Ron Godwin, Liberty's executive vice president, said Falwell, 73, had been found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital.

Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but noted that Falwell had “a history of heart challenges.”

“I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast,” Godwin said. “He went to his office, I went to mine and they found him unresponsive.”

Falwell, a television evangelist who founded the Moral Majority in 1979, became the face of the religious right in the 1980s. He later founded the conservative Liberty University and served as its chancellor.

In the 1980s, Falwell saw his political lobbying organization grow to 6.5 million members, raising millions of dollars for conservative politicians and helping to elect Ronald Reagan president.

A biography of Falwell on Liberty University's Web site states that "with the impetus of the newly organized Moral Majority, millions of people of faith voted for the first time in 1980 and helped elect Ronald Reagan and many conservative congressmen and senators."

Falwell survived two serious health scares in early 2005. He was hospitalized in February for two weeks with what was described as a viral infection, then hospitalized again in March with congestive heart failure after being found unconscious. At that time he had to be resuscitated by EMTs at the hospital emergency room.

A native of Lynchburg, Falwell and his wife, Macel, have three children and eight grandchildren.

His Jerry Falwell ministries take in about $200 million a year in revenues, according to Liberty University's Web site.

Liberty University's commencement is scheduled for Saturday, with former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich as the featured speaker.

This report will be updated as information becomes available.

Partial transcript of comments from the Thursday, September 13, 2001 edition of the '700 Club.'

JERRY FALWELL: And I agree totally with you that the Lord has protected us so wonderfully these 225 years. And since 1812, this is the first time that we've been attacked on our soil and by far the worst results. And I fear, as Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Defense, said yesterday, that this is only the beginning. And with biological warfare available to these monsters - the Husseins, the Bin Ladens, the Arafats--what we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact--if, in fact--God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.

PAT ROBERTSON: Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population.

JERRY FALWELL: The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this.

PAT ROBERTSON: Well, yes.

JERRY FALWELL: And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way--all of them who have tried to secularize America--I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."

PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I totally concur, and the problem is we have adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government. And so we're responsible as a free society for what the top people do. And, the top people, of course, is the court system.

JERRY FALWELL: Pat, did you notice yesterday the ACLU, and all the Christ-haters, People For the American Way, NOW, etc. were totally disregarded by the Democrats and the Republicans in both houses of Congress as they went out on the steps and called out on to God in prayer and sang "God Bless America" and said "let the ACLU be hanged"? In other words, when the nation is on its knees, the only normal and natural and spiritual thing to do is what we ought to be doing all the time--calling upon God.

PAT ROBERTSON: Amen

Falwell and the so called "moral majority" spent the first half of the 80's proclaiming AIDS to be "God's punishment against homosexuals".

And since the Reagan administration took everything they said seriously, they refused to do anything about AIDS, believing it was only a gay disease.

Ironically enough, it was only the death of the Reagan administration's own closet fag Terry Dolan who made them wake up to the reality of the disease.

He was one of the biggest opponents against sex education and clean needle programs influencing government in the States. His anti-gay, anti-education, "let the drug-users die" message only helped the disease spread very quickly in this country (causing the deaths of not only many drug-users and club-going homosexuals but the inevitable millions of parents, children and those not initially seen as in danger). Meanwhile, in Britain, Thatcher latched onto no moral majority and pushed forth programs of sex education (instead of just preaching nonsense abstinence) and passing out clean needles on the streets. This wasn't about helping drug-users and perverts (as Falwell claimed)...this was about pushing back the spread of the 20th-century equivalent of the plague.

Fucking moron is responsible for a lot of death.

Hopefully someday people will let go of the whole "God punishes and judges" crapola. People who believe in a God who is floating out in space or in some realm and a God who punishes and judges are believing in a God that doesn't exist. It is actually a childish belief and a belief that God is separate from us and everything. What would do the world good is a shift away from ego consciousness. Hell, a shift away from ego consciousness would do Van Halen alot of good.

If God created AIDS to kill homosexuals and drug-users, he could be considered sloppy because he also killed a lot of heterosexuals, non-drug-users and children.

I've always found it amusing that homosexuals are born the way they are (people trying to act like it's a choice are morons...who would choose a more obviously difficult life?...every homosexual I've ever spoken to says they were born exactly as they are), yet God punishes them for being as he created them.

Bunch of fucking nonsense.

Nailed it...There was a special on MTV on a big fat gay kid in High School wanting to join a soccer team...They showed pictures of him doing ballet and shit when he was like 5...

I am always curious...In the bible it says Every Sin is equal in the face of God...So isn't Homosexuality on the same level as lying?

Not only that, but as an old friend and co-worker of mine (who was a Lesbian) once put it.... "If AIDS was God's punishment against gay men, then I guess we (Lesbians) are the Chosen People"

Statistically, Lesbians remain the lowest risk group to this day.

I'm not one who doesn't like homosexuals or anything, but i believe homosexuality is a temptation just like any other tempation. everyone is born with different tendencies, it just depends how you deal with it. everyone has the right to make a choice, just like everyone has the right to like a certain sports team. i don't agree with the lifestyle of homosexuals but i'm fine with it and i can still like them for who they are as a person. i don't think being gay defines who you are, it's just one aspect, and it's the road they chose to take. i don't like it when everyone forces homosexuality down my throat like "if you don't think it's great and perfectly normal, then you're retarded." i say just keep it to yourself and don't try to make your entire lifestyle different just because of your sexual preference.

You're "tempted" by homosexuals? Really?

One of the interesting paradoxes of the anti-Gay movement. They cannot admit that Gays are the way they are biologically, and "choice" has little to do with it. So they're all admitting that they're a bit gay to begin with and must have those urges.

So it becomes this great temptation. Like: "I can't have that piece of pie or I'll get fat and I can't let that guy anally fornicate me because it's a sin and I'll go to hell."

What!!??

Rikk
05-15-2007, 06:37 PM
I have never in my life considered or been tempted to have a gay experience...ever. But a good friend of mine had gay "temptations" begin in him the minute he hit puberty.

Where was the fucking choice (or temptation) there?

I love how homosexuals are attacked for giving in to temptation when I'd like to see any heterosexual live a full life without having sex with someone of the opposite sex.

I don't really get this word 'temptation' thrown around in here.

Using the word 'temptation' in this way kind of implies some deviancy yet I might say 'I'm tempted to give all my money to the poor'.

Or I'm tempted to have a tomato and cucumber salad.

It was reported on AP and by a number of Iraqi bloggers recently that fundie Islamists in Iraq were handing out leaflets telling the local population that it was a sin against god to have a cucumber and tomato salad because the two should not be on the same plate as it was likely to cause ungodly sexual thoughts.

I fucking kid you not.

Single adults having consensual sex is not an moral issue as it falls within the realm of not harming anyone else. It may however be against the rules set down in some primative writings but then the same writings may say you shouldn't eat bacon or shellfish. They may also say you should hack bits off your genitals because an all knowing god designed them wrongly.

As regards the comment about gays ramming their lifestyles down your throat(maybe a bit unfortunate terminology) I personally find camp bitchy queens a bit fucking irritating so avoid them but I also find the sad middle aged reactionary WASP snobs at my local country club annoying too.

So what?

Cheers!

I heard about that. Apparently the Imams thought that it was "evil" to mix "male" and "female" vegetables.

Now the cucumber-penis association is obvious, but I don't remember seeing a pussy that looked like a tomato. Although they do have a lot of red "juice" dripping out of them at certain times of the month.......

Larry Flynt On Jerry Falwell: Hustler Lawsuit Revisited On Day Of Rival's Death
LYNCHBURG, Va (May 15, 2007) -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell, the folksy, small-town preacher who used the power of television to found the Moral Majority and turn the Christian right into a mighty force in American politics during the Reagan years, died Tuesday at 73.

One of Falwell's most memorable opponents was Hustler kingpin Larry Flynt, who had a very public legal battle with the Reverend over freedom of speech rights.

At the heart of the case was a satirical ad that ran in Hustler in 1983with the headline "Jerry Falwell Talks About His First Time," in which the magazine described a drunken Falwell having an incestuous encounter with his mother.

Falwell sued Flynt (pictured together on "Larry King Live" in 1997), alleging libel and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

However, the Supreme Court ruled that a public figure could not recover damages over distress based on satire under the umbrella of free speech.

Upon hearing of his death, Flynt released the following statement to Access Hollywood:

"The Reverend Jerry Falwell and I were arch enemies for fifteen years. We became involved in a lawsuit concerning First Amendment rights and Hustler magazine. Without question, this was my most important battle Π the l988 Hustler Magazine, Inc., v. Jerry Falwell case, where after millions of dollars and much deliberation, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in my favor.

My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. He would visit me in

California and we would debate together on college campuses. I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling.

The most important result of our relationship was the landmark decision from the Supreme Court that made parody protected speech, and the fact that much of what we see on television and hear on the radio today is a direct result of my having won that now famous case which Falwell played such an important role in."

Falwell is survived by his wife, Macel, his two sons and a daughter, Jeannie Falwell Savas. Funeral arrangements were not immediately known.

It's a shame that there is no hell for him to go to.

Being philosophical for a moment I guess he is in a kind of hell.

Human existance is consciousness. This is a series of electrical signals within the brain that make you what you are. Your essense is that and so when you die you live on at least for a while because of your influence on the human brains around you that survive longer.

Given that Falwell was a nasty cunt then although he will live on for a generation or so it's not in a good way.

Pass the matzoh, willya?

I've always found it amusing that homosexuals are born the way they are (people trying to act like it's a choice are morons...who would choose a more obviously difficult life?...every homosexual I've ever spoken to says they were born exactly as they are), yet God punishes them for being as he created them.

Bunch of fucking nonsense.

Oh, lighten up and have another glass of Manischewitz, willya?

Yeah, yeah, just keep playing with that dreidel, there, okay...

Well, then I guess God was deaf to Rikkberg's prayers and hopes that Falwell is rotting in Hell.

I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way--all of them who have tried to secularize America--I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."

Really? I point the finger at human greed and evil, personified in the oil industry and the military industrial complex.

I hadn't pondered about how 'abortionists' and feminists had affected US foreign policy.

What!!??

lol you're good at twisting shit around....it's hard to have an oppinion around here but at least i tried. sorry for thinking the opposite of what you think, i guess i learned my lesson......don't bother sharing your voice on an all liberal-based thread. and no i'm not saying i don't like you because you have a different political view than i do....who gives a shit.

Don't be such a puss. If you have an opinion, stand up for it and support it. Otherwise, we'll stomp your ignorant ass into the ground.

LMAO!!!

The forum Puss-in-Chief trying to call someone else a puss.

This is priceless.

The guy was simply trying to debate in a sensible manner and once again you libs need to bring out the insults on the guy. Pathetic.

It simply shows, once again, that you libs can't entertain a civil debate in here.

Even if the Jesus story is true you have a Jewish guy in ancient times who never married which was unheard of and hung around with a bunch of guys giving them foot massages and saying he loved them.

Totally. Once a month, the church that I grew up going to, would hold a "communion" service. You know, "this is the body of Christ" etc.

First the singing of praises, then some back and forth chanting shit, followed by some grape juice served with a cardboard cracker.

It would be a better ceremony if they served Christ Phad Thai with a 1993 White Merlot.

The evening would end with some creepy foot washing. Men with the men, and women with the women. (We hadn't made to Leviticus yet.) You would get your feet washed and then wash the feet of another. Sometimes I ended up washing the crusty feet of one of the old church dudes. Nasty.

I would have much rather bathed me some MILF feet in the other room.

What about a frosty glass of Stella Artois? Is that Christ-worthy?
