SLADE are the shit.

Very underrated band, excellent live band (they've not long reissused all their live albums on a 2-disc set...there's the proof).

I wish Noddy and Jim would get off their ass and do one more tour.

Just listening to the SLADE box set, actually.

Well Quiet Riot was good when Randy Rhoads was the lead guitarist, I'll give you that. But Kevin DuBrow sounds like a pirate trying to impersonate Noddy Holder.

He has the power to change the screen color into green if you watch carefully. LOL Those "Leprachan" movies he was in were pretty good.

Kevin DuBrow was the biggest geek/goon/dork/rock and roll wannabe/poseur/dipshit cunt EVER!!! He mocked Dave's smartass gig along with trying to mimic Rod Stewart. ZERO originality whatsoever. That schmuck is the epitome of a rock and roll clown. People say that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery but that dude had no pipes to back up shit. Still dunno why the fuck Rhoads or Sarzo played with that tool?

I always kinda put Twisted Sister and Quiet Riot in the same queeya boat back in '83 or '84. However and in the now, I actually respect and admire Twisted Sister. Quiet Riot on the other hand just lucked out and sucked. Hence, NO longevity whatsoever. They were LAME!!!

Quiet Riot were such a flash in the pan...suppose I can give them credit for Metal Health, which didn't totally suck and did sell a lot of records.

They had no staying power in the end, agreed. Think it's because once people (including Rudy Sarzo) actually realized what a dipshit Roth wannabe cunt DuBrow was and how utterly average the band and their original music was, which was right around the time Condition Critical came out, it was all over far as the big time went.

In all honesty, even their stuff when RR was in the band wasn't all that great.

Slade's fuckin' beautiful! I remember seeing them on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert when I was like 5 and between them and Alice Cooper, I was bit by the bug. I demanded the 45 when it came out. Oh, sorry kids, a 45 is a little vinyl record that has a hit one side and another song on the other(usually)

I remember when Quiet Riot's version of Cum On Feel The Noize first came out. First I laughed. Then I made a shitload of money form the idiots that swore that QR wrote it. I kept telling 'em it was Slade but they didn't listen. I brought the 45 to school the next day and collected some tasty coin.

On another note, does anyone know where I can find the B-side oif COFTN on CD? It's called I'm Mee, I'm Now And That's Orl. The 45 is starting to sound like cooking bacon in a fireplace.

Suppose if I had to rate the two (DuBrow and Dokken), I'd give Don Dokken a slight edge in terms of vocal...er...'ability', although as far as stage presence the guy was comparable to a wet sack of shit (minus the sack).

I tend to forget DuBrow and Quiet Riot were actually contemporaries of Van Halen back in the LA club days, which makes DuBrow's pitiful attempts to ape Roth's persona in the early 1980s all the more laughable.

Whatever. The dude (DuBrow) made a bundle after more than a few years of slogging through clubs, watching his bandmates get lured away by other bigger artists, finally got his 'instant' success via a couple of lame cover tunes and promptly blew it on a several year binge of booze, broads and blow. Suppose all of that is kinda 'rock and roll'.

Don Dokken just looked too much like Adam West for me to ever take seriously. Even back in the day, whenever someone would play the Tooth And Nail album and the opening verse lines of Alone Again would start up...with ol' Dumb Dikken swishily crooning "I love to see you in the morning light" like some poncy hairdresser serenading Savichi after a night of dancing to Laura Branigan's Greatest Hits at the Blue Oyster Bar, I couldn't help but laugh. DD was an obvious poser of the highest order, and the fact that he did some guide vocal tracks on the Scorpions' Blackout album won't erase that.

I liked QR for what it was a one hit wonder band someone elses tune .
Mental Health had a spark or two.

I never puchased any of either band Dokken or QR.

Rat was more my bag of that style and time of whatever the fukk they
were doing. Dokken and QR just kinda passed in one ear and out the other.

"Splendidly put together 4-CD set"

Slade were one of THE great British bands in my little black book. Over the years they've been name-checked as a major influence by rock gods like the Ramones, Oasis and the Pistols. Why even James Blunt (gawd 'elp us) has been known to do a version of Coz I Luv You in his live set. Heavens to betsy!! This splendidly put together 4-CD set is a timely reminder of their might and talent, which went far beyond the numerous foot-stompin', badly-spelt hits they racked up in the singles charts over the years. The 70s was a particularly magical time for Noddy, Jim, Dave and Don and all the hits and more are spread across this anthology, including their more melancholy treasures suach as Everyday and How Does It Feel. If Oasis ever get around to recording a covers album, I'd dearly love to hear Liam wrap his tonsils around that last one. As the song that started it all goes, get down and get with it. Baby!

"Essential fan's portrait of a working band in their prime"

Even before they delivered the Born To Be Wild cover that kickstarts this overdue history, Slade were chiselling away at the Britrock coalface. The run of '70s hits that made their name - from roof-raising romps like Mama Weer All Crazee Now to the elegiac Far Far Away - marked Noddy Holder and Jimmy Lea out as the Lennon and McCartney of their era. Not everything reaches those highpoints, but this collection - complete with an excellent essay charting their career - is an essential fan's portrait of a working band in their prime.

The official wielder of the ugly stick was definitely working overtime during the advent of 70s glam rock if Slade are anything to go by. With their chipped Toby mug visages and criminal attire, the band countered their obvious visual shortcomings by producing some of the most memorable pop-rock anthems of all time. This four-CD compilation presents a comprehensive history of our dyslexic gurners, from their early skinhead days as an underwhelming rock band to the golden years and a non-stop barrage of stomping hits.

"....Superb...."

Appearing hot on the heels of individually upgraded and remastered editions of Slade's most important albums, this four CD boxed set is a superb alternative, collecting together 84 hits, album cuts and rarities from 1969 to 1991 in a sturdy cardboard longbox, which also includes a 72-page booklet containing an informative essay on the band by Keith Altham, an extensive discography and a multitude of pictures of the band, all for less than £20. Noddy Holder's customary bludgeoning vocal style isn't to everyone's taste, but his paint-stripping contributions to Take Me Bak 'Ome, Sweeze Me Pleeze Me and Merry Xmas Everybody perfectly capture the spirit of the band and he does have his quieter, more sensitive moments, as illustrated by the reflective Everyday.

They've been reissuing the entire SLADE back catalouge...great stuff and greatly improved sound.

The 2-CD "Alive" is unbelievable. All the LIVE albums, plus the "Alive at Reading" EP. Really shows you what Slade were REALLY about, not as being a novelty act who had a Christmas hit (thats how they tend to be seen over here)

I LOVE Slade.Imo probably THE most underrated band.Noddy's Voice is just fantastic,The guitars fantastic.I have been wishing for years they would do a tour.Noddy pops up in the odd TV thing and it drives me mad. There are so many great bands from birmingham but Slade are my fav (slade then wizzard)

Shaun, when was the box itself released?

Ironically, I think the biggest hits Slade had in the US were on the album "Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply" which came out after Quiet Riot made them some royalty money.

It was late last year. I remember I got it in October.
