I guess this thing had a aluminum block a first for mass production american or some shit what a piece of crap.

My old man had one new and two years into it he was driving down the street the drivers side axel came unhooked at the differential rolled
out about 1 ft from the side of the car no brakes.
luckilly he was in suburbia and was only doing 25mph .

Chevy gave him another one then my brohter got braodsided by a jaggof flipped it tree times landed on the roof walked away.

and still had time to check on the drunk who T-boned him.
Nice guy my bro, bad car, cursed i said.

I seen one with a blown 396 and 50 Cragers back in the day god it was UGLY.

The Cragers were worth more than this rolling junk.

After '72 you can throw the Darts and Dusters in there...Don't forget about those GTS Darts! Bad ass they were. Ugly, but badass.
Friend of mine still has the GTS- used to be a daily driver in the late 70's- early 80's. Now, not so much. He realizes what he has. ;)

Anybody remember what the hell those ugly ass boat/cars with the propellers were called? Who made them?

My Dad owned an AMC Hormet (with the fake woody panels) in the mid to late 70s and it was pure shite. Ugly and useless. He owned it for 3 years and I don't think drove more than 500 miles at a time without something catastrophic happening. We lost a reat axle on the highway on a camping trip one year. Miserable hunk of American scrap metal.

Spot on! My dad bought an AMC Hornet for my sisters to drive to high school. I was broke down more than it ran. What's funny is I had an AMC Jeep CJ7 for my first car and it never gave trouble. The inline 6 ran so smoothly that you couldn't tell it was on. I sure had some cold ass winters in it though.

Sorry bro cos I wasn't putting down the brand at all. I was just speaking from my brother's terrible experience. I had a similar one with a '95 Jaguar XJ6 that I owned a decade ago. It was a beautiful car, it was soooo smooth and fast but that was the rare occasion when it wasn't in the fucking shop. No wonder their resale's so horrible.

Seriously, it seemed like everytime I'd just get something fixed, something new would break!!! Hence, I'll NEVER own another Jag.

The quality control on British cars is deffinately hit and miss. I wrench on my own vehicles and I have a good friend in New England that fixes and restores Land Rovers, Jaguars, Rolls Royces, Lamborghiniis, and Ferraris. He also runs one of the few machine shops you are going to trust your expensive Euro aluminum engine block or heads to.

He knows his shit. I had some problems with the Rover's fuel injection system and he nailed the problem. It was a stuck valve on the overflow tank and you have to take the rear quarter panel off to get to it. Another problem on British cars is cold solder joints. Once you fix their shitty wiring problems and understand their crazy engineering, some of their cars are quite reliable.

I still think I have the best Range Rover made. It's on the military Series I frame which is massive. It has the trusty Rover 3.5 engine that just keeps going and going. Instead of a Borg Warner chain driven transfer case I have a Lucas transfers case that is all gears in a constant oil bath and who made the thing for Lucas was Rolls Royce. The running gear is military grade with the axles and differentials housed in welded steel housings. The whole exhaust system is stainless steel.

It's gets treated with Waxoyl every two years so the thing has Zero rust. I just had it repainted, and the seats reupolstered in green leather and the paint is British green. It drives tight like a new car even though it's an 87.

I get ya, but Iacocca in your picture is standing next to a Ford. The Reliant K was a Chrysler product. Anyways I worked for a company in upstate New York that had some in their fleet. We were comming back from a meeting in Canadaigua, New York and I was asleep and another dude was driving. The next thing I know is waking up and seeing corn flaying towards me. The fucker fell asleep at the wheel and we ended up flying through a corn field at highway speed. Damn it was noisey and corn flying everywhere! The car didn't flip but boy did it drive like shit after that. Everyone called it the corn car because it smelled like corn.

The Granada we had was a piece of shit - some kinda nightmarish fake emerald green...like a rolling mood ring with lotsa wind noise. My mom would always go, "is a window open?" I was embarrassed to ride in that car. Our other ride was this Datsun 310 station wagon...it smelled like YZ80 2-stroke oil mix, 'cause that's the way we took my YZ80 to the hare scrambles/motocross track. See, we'd lay the bike on it's side with the back open..gas would leak out, and the fucking car would smell like gasoline for days. I wasn't embarrassed to ride in the Datsun....hell, I'd sit in it in the driveway with the windows up!!!

we always had an AMC around...three or four different CJ's...two different Cherokees...a Hornet...mom bought a Matador wagon when they got divorced, that was the biggest POS of them all. screamin' yellow with the woodgrain.

now i have my old Jeep pickup...and so far it ain't too bad.

You know, the AMCs weren't really that bad quality wise...

Some of the Jeep Cherokees had problems, but what is funny is that it was the ones that had Chevy 2.8L engines (AMC bought them because they couldn't produce enough).

twonabomber
07-27-2007, 12:19 AM
those were the baby (XJ) Cherokees. the big ol' SJ's had mostly AMC engines, some early ones had Buicks. those 2.8's were the worst, but the six out of an 80's Camaro is an easy swap.

the inline six in my Wrangler is an AMC design and those fuckers allegedly run forever. i'm only at 130k though.

it was funny when we were tearing apart the truck to put new floors and rockers in...my dad was saying shit like "there should be six spot welds here, but depending on if it was Monday/Friday/close to quitting time/close to lunch time there may be five spot welds..." and the floor supports on the cab were rust-free, whatever they were treated with is still working. for some 20 year old steel it's pretty clean.

This car wasn't really lame, least not at first..... but God was it ugly.

http://members.fortunecity.com/copcarsite/mbody401.jpg

Dodge Diplomat......

I was working graveyard shift and going to school in the mornings at the time (1987) so when I wrecked my old Nova one morning, I absolutely had to buy another car before I could sleep that afternoon, in order to work the following night. That doesn't leave much time to be choosy.

So I got the car..... drove nice, drove fast (best of all). It was an ex Washington State Patrol car. Still had the spotlight, but no lights or sirens. Unfortunately, it had rubber plugs where the old antenna mounts and rooftop light wiring went in, and thus, the car leaked every time there was heavy rain.

And this being the Pacific Northwest, that happened a lot.

Fortunately, because it was built as a police car, it had vinyl bench seats and all rubber floor mats, which means I could clean up the puddles with a shop vac and not have to worry about moldy carpets.

The car had over 100,000 miles on it, but those were mostly state maintained freeway miles, so the car was not showing it's age.

Wasn't much for picking up chicks, given the ugliness factor, but I could speed by cops at 100 miles an hour on the freeway, and they would look up and WAVE at me, thinking I was one of their own :D

Unfortunately, about the time the car hit 200K it fell apart fast.

Traded it in on a fucking K-car of all things which was even uglier......

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/76/Dodge_Aries_Coupe.jpg/250px-Dodge_Aries_Coupe.jpg

That car was so much of a lemon, it should have been yellow, and it swore me off of Chrysler products to this day.

Including me. What's ironic is it's the car that saved Chrysler and things were so bad that Iaccoca was printing the annual report on cheap newsprint to save money. I remember him in commercials begging people to buy a Reliant K because it was their patriotic duty. LOL! The care was basically thrown together out of bits and pieces they had in the factories.

I would take those days over the greedy rape the company CEOS we have now. They drive the company into the ground or outsource everything or get $24 million when they get fired. It makes no sense.

Chrysler paid the US Govt. back early for the loans it got only to be merged with Dahmler Benz. They fired all the Chrysler people including a friend of mine and now they want to sell the company.

The Reliant K being the piece of shit it was did save a company and somes jobs that improved it's product and sadly got raped anyways.

the inline six in my Wrangler is an AMC design and those fuckers allegedly run forever. i'm only at 130k though.

it was funny when we were tearing apart the truck to put new floors and rockers in...my dad was saying shit like "there should be six spot welds here, but depending on if it was Monday/Friday/close to quitting time/close to lunch time there may be five spot welds..." and the floor supports on the cab were rust-free, whatever they were treated with is still working. for some 20 year old steel it's pretty clean.

The rumor I've heard was that GM sent AMC their rejected 2.8s with QC defects...

wouldn't surprise me at all.

it's funny...my J20 has GM steering...and Ford ignition...cheaper to buy the parts instead of developing their own.

Also true. That's why I never owned one. I drive shit that would cost an absolute fortune if I didn't know how to wrench on them myself.

Yup. Ford owns Volvo but they buy engines and fuel injection systems from Fuji Industrial in Japan. What's an American, British, or German car? They all contain parts from all over. Crack open the ECU and see where all the IC's come from. Some are American, Some are Japanese, Some are European.

I have a British car that the seats are from Mercedes which is fine because they are bullet proof, comfortable, and parts are widely available and not as expensive as you would think if you shop around.

With the internet you can find others who own or work on the same vehicle you have. My Mercedes G Wagon stopped running and one guy in Germany told me to jack the rear of the car up and leave it over night and in the morning it would probably start up. Sounded crazy but it worked. Apparently the fuel pump had lost it's prime and this is the easy fix. Who would have ever known and it isn't in the service manual.

Thank's to the internet, getting wierd cars running is easier than ever. The information and parts is easier than ever to find.

That's not all...the're so integrated, your so-called American or Japanese cars are fom all corners of the globe.

BTW.. Ford is dumping Land Rover, so get yer spare parts while you can. ;)

You guys are awful rough on Lee Iacocca. The K- car helped him help save Chrysler/Dodge/ Plymouth (r.i.p).

But his best idea is still on the road.

He was a victim of the mad rush for the big 3 to make economy cars.

Yeah Ford is trying to dump Land Rover but they want to sell Jaguar with it. You have to remember Ford bought Land Rover from BMW a few years ago. The only reason Ford is selling is because they need to raise quick cash to keep opperating. Someone will pick up Land Rover for sure but the big long-term question is the Ford family going to have to sell Ford or close shop? The high cost of healthcare in the US and the UAW forcing Ford to make models that don't sell have made it uncompetative in the world market place.

I think Jaguar will just dissapear. I think as we go into a worldwide recession here in a few years there will be a shakeout of automobile manufactures. We will see a few brands bite it.

Seriously, it seemed like everytime I'd just get something fixed, something new would break!!! Hence, I'll NEVER own another Jag.

Mine was exactly like this except black. Biggest piece of shit.

Damn i guess you really were unlucky with that car, i owned several used jags a couple of years ago - small purchase cost because of the high fuel costs nobody wanted to buy those - and every car build past 1993 was quite reliable.

There are and were alot of shit assed ugly cars today and yesterday but I have to throw out an ugly beast that I learned to drive in when I was somewhere around 12. Bad Assed ugly beast with a 440. Loved the suicide seats of this because that is where the parents kept the cooler full of beer and was a great place to shoot out of back window hunting back woods in northern Wisconsin.

Not for the Celica...
It's a lot of fun to drive and looks awsome (except for certain years).

My first B-friend owned a Supra... now, that was far from being boring!

But I agree... In general, American cars look better than Japanese ones (a bigger and stronger look with great muscles)...
More my type! ;)

My problem with Japanese cars is the trim inside is always shit even in the Lexus. In fact, try riding in a Lexus when you are 6 feet tall or higher. They are made for little Asian people. Give me a big German car anyday.

Ha! ha! ha! I love the chopped boat. Someone had too much time and money on their hands. You still could fold the seats down and fuck in it but you wouldn have enough head room for doggy style I'm afraid.
