I saw Alice in Chains ata club here in NJ, Starland Ballroom, and the show was outstanding, one of the best.

You can make a sure bet that I'll be at this show!

Heck, I'll check out VR too.

BTW, the first time saw Alice in Chains was in Oct of 1990 and the ywere the opener for this band you may have heard, Extreme, ha!

I next saw them at Clash of Titans in the summer of 1991 with SLAYER, Megadeth, and Amtrak oops I mean Anthrax.

Then of course I saw them in 1993 at Lollapalooza.

August 17th, maybe aug 20? oh yeah

I saw Alice In Chains last year at HoB's in Orlando.

Good show.

I'll pass on this one.

One of my favourite bands EVER. No one has ever sounded like that, and few have commited that level of emotional intensity to disc.

I hope they tour over here again soon...

two formerly legendary bands, both without their lead singers.

(No, I don't even recognize Weiland's existence after the Hall of Lame)

Think I'll pass on this one......

That's lame Ford. Slash and Jerry Cantrell in one night and you'll pass?

Man you're spoiled up there.

Slash is still on my shit list as well because of the fiasco.

As for Cantrell, I'd like to see him move on to something else. Whether it includes the other band members or not, there's no point in calling a band "Alice In Chains" if Layne isn't there. I thought they sounded great playing "Barracuda" with Gretchen Wilson (who isn't related to Ann & Nancy, but sings like she could be) on the last VH1 "Rock Honors" show.

Just like VH, I never had the chance to see them with the original frontman. So I take what I can get. But I'm telling you, if you get a chance to see a full AIC show, you should do it because they are monsters. I'd imagine you'd have chance since you're in their home town.

I just get so excited when there's a good double bill. It's like a free show. Like when I bought Who tickets and Robert Plant appeared on the bill. I love that shit.

I am telling you people, I saw them last summer with William DuVall and they sounded outstanding. It was The Church of Alice in Chains and truly everyone was singing for Layne. Those yout tube vids I have seen don't do any justice.

Do yourself a favor and go see them, preferably headlining a club.

I'm stuck going to see this concert tonight cause its my buddy's b-day. I'll give a review of the show tomorrow.

So here's my review.

First night of the tour. Only 5000 showed up. Alice in Chains had some technical problems like guitars cutting out. But they put on a good show. Their new singer can pretty much cover all of Layne Staleys style.

Some highlights were Them Bones, Man in a Box, We Die Young, Would, Angry Chair and No Excuses.

As for Velvet Revolver. They played a lot of new songs from their new album. I didnt care much for them.

Their highlights were Vaseline, Interstate Love Song, Its So Easy, Mr Brownstone and they actually played Patience!

They also did a pretty cool cover of Wish You Were Here.

Velvet revolver hits target with new material and old hits
T'CHA DUNLEVY, The Gazette
Published: 26 minutes ago

Rock history can be revived - and revisited - in many ways. Velvet Revolver brought its arena-rock cross-pollination to the Bell Centre Theatre last night before a crowd of 5,000.

The group is a combination of Guns N' Roses veterans (Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum) with former Stone Temple Pilots leader Scott Weiland. In the opening slot was '90s grunge act Alice In Chains, with newcomer William DuVall taking the place of the band's late singer Layne Staley, who died in 2002 of a drug overdose.

Velvet Revolver has been at this for a while. The group is now touring for its second album Libertad, the follow-up to 2003's Contraband. The new release finds the band further refining its disparate influences - Weiland's alt-rock pomp and GNR's balls-out rawk.

The mixture went down smoother this time around. The songs on Libertad exhibit a more carefree attitude, which carried over into last night's show. While the band was equally animated in its 2005 Bell Centre appearance, last night everything just seemed to gel more, as if, with two albums under its belt, Velvet Revolver is finding its groove.

That groove is deeply rooted in over-the-top rock 'n' roll. Weiland has never been one to hold back, ditto for his GNR comrades. To wit, yesterday's set (immediately preceded by NWA's Straight Outta Compton blasting over the PA) began with the wail of Slash's guitar, leading into the turbo-charged liftoff of the new album's first song, Let It Roll.

"Montreal! We are Velvet Revolver and we always will play motherf---in' rock 'n' roll," Weiland howled, a few songs in.

The banter continued a while later: "For those of you who watch too much American Idol, that's not what you're going to get here. If you're offended by what you hear or what you see, you're not going to get a refund."

With that, his shirt came off and the band was into Big Machine, the fifth in a string of songs off its first album. It was an empty taunt - there was little offensive about this show, unless you find classic rock shenanigans to be an assault on moral rectitude.

Catering to the nostalgic in the audience (of which there were many), renditions of a couple of songs from each of the STP (Vasoline, Interstate Love Song) and GNR (Patience, It's So Easy) back-catalogues were played, many during a mid-show acoustic set. These drew some of the biggest cheers - proof that new material is nice and all, but fans love to hear the old hits.

Alice In Chains sounded solid in its early set, but there was something (or someone) noticeably absent from the band's performance. A big part of the group's mystique was embodied in Staley's troubled persona. Without him, despite DuVall's best efforts, and the presence of original guitarist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney, and bassist Mike Inez (who joined in 1993), the performance came off as little more than a well-meaning tribute concert.

Alice Hired The Wrong Lead Singer...They should've hired the dude from Puddle of Mudd, The dude imitates Layne a lot and his vocals are similiar. Would've been a lot better than the RockStar guy they hired..

As For Velvet Revovler..I have no intrest in A Scott Weiland led GN'R...I want Axl-Slash-Duff-Izzy-Whomever the fuck they want as a drummer as a lineup to see..

That's fine. You can sit out one of the best rock shows of the year.

Be one of the millions to waste their life waiting around for Axl to show up

My thoughts entirely. Y'know, I don't even see it as GNR with a different singer, I see it as a completely different band with a very different vibe. The first record was much darker than anything GNR did, and although the new one is more "Rock n Roll" it's a very different sound to GNR.

I enjoy them for what they are, not what I want them to be. And they are one of the deadliest live bands out there.

Buch each to their own: if people don't like them, don't go....

I just got back from this show in Saratoga.

Front row, hanging over the barrier, DIRECTLY in front of Jerry & then, later, Slash.

AIC v2 is bad-ass. These guys are pros & are tight as fuck. Cantrell didn't miss a note & was spot on. Duvall sounds excellent & is a perfect replacement for Layne.

Duff came out & played some rhythm on 'Rooster'.

The only possible complaint is that these guys need 2 hours to play all their 'Best Of'.

Velvet Revolver is not exactly my cup of tea, but they put on a rowdy show & like AIC, are a true bunch of professionals who know how to put on a show.

Their intro music: 'Straight Outta Compton'

At 42 years old, Slash looks great. He's obviously hitting the weight room. His arms are huge! He also has an amazing collection of sweet Les Pauls!

Weiland does his little dancing around thing & I'll be damned if he didn't sound just like Axl on the GnR tunes.

The STP song 'Vaseline' sounds awesome live! Actually, all their songs sound better live. Their sound had that 'punch' that seems to be missing on their albums.

During one point in the show I was thinking 'Man, this would be so much better if this was Van Fuckin Halen on this stage!' But, alas, it was not... Soon enough on that, though.

Having seen Slash & Zakk in the same week, well, Zakk >>>> Slash.

Cheers for the review, sounds like a sweet show!

I've seen VR three times, and I agree with you that are a great live band and that a lot of their material sounds better live. They really belt it out, and playing with more sleaze.

Cheers :)

Cheers to you as well, Binnie!

This was a really good show. Nothing too extravagUnt. Just 2 hours of solid rock n' roll.

Ain't nuthin' wrong with that!

If you pass on this cuz it looks kind of 'Meh', you're missing a good time.

At a few points during the show, Slash's youngest son Cash was trying to walk out on stage, only to be rescued just in time by his mom. Pretty funny stuff.

After all was said & done, she came out to the front of the stage & handed out about 20 picks to the kids who hung around. I only saw this cuz I had to sit for a few after standing for 3 hours. As a 1st impression, she appears to be a very nice, cool, down-to-earth lady.

Everybody from both bands looks clean & sober & in top form as well!

Stand out tracks (for me):

AIC- 'We Die Young' & 'Them Bones'

VR- 'Vasoline' 'Wish You were Here' & 'Slither'

Woot Woot!

I got that back in October and that's why I can't wait for just 45 more minutes of AIC. Jerry sounds so incredible, his tone and technique these days chills you to the bone and then knocks you on your ass. And Sean Kinney is rock solid live.

I'm glad you got rocked out!

I saw the show two weeks ago, and well I thought AIC sounded great, solid, professional, and strong and VR was well weak. Scott's voice was so weak(what happened to his voice????) and the sound was messy. I'm not digging VR too much and I have both albums. I would alsmot say I thought VR sucked, and I saw them in a couple of clubs a few years ago and thought they were good then.

AIC thumbs up and VR thumbs down......

(I had a vast majority of aggreement with the large contingent of friends that went with me to the show as well....)

ALICE IN CHAINS SINGER EXCITED FOR VAN HALEN.

Van Halen fans come in all shapes and sizes and it is not just the average Joes who are excited about the reunion tour. Famous fans can hardly wait as well, like Alice in Chains frontman Jerry Cantrell. Jerry spoke about the band and one of his favorite tracks of theirs. "'Ain't Talking Bout Love,' Van Halen, it's one of my favorite songs and all of those first records that they put out were pretty revolutionary. That guitar sound was unbelievable. Eddie Van Halen is one of my biggest heroes and one of the most unique guitar players of the century in sound." The David Lee Roth fronted Van Halen reunion tour gets underway on the 27th in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Cool, but didn't think it was worth a new thread.
