O.k People,let the countdown begin.

Less than two months to go and my fever is on Hot to Trot.:)

Everyone who Loves The Game has a Country to support and i know That England are World Champions, but for how long?

It has been 20 years since The AllBlacks have won the very first World Cup back in 1987 and it's about Time We did it again.

Who do you support and who do you think will win The Cup?

BTW....Go The AllBlacks.:)

Can't see England do very well at all to be honest, they are not the team they were last time around.

Despite their performance at the weekend, I think that Ireland might be worth a bit of a bet on - I could see them causing an upset given half an opportunity.

But the All Blacks have to be favourite, and I honestly just can't see anybody winning it but them this time around. The Aussies or the French will be in the final with them (unless I'm right about Ireland).

I won't really be supporting anyone, as it's not really my game: always prefered League personally, which I played until I was 16.

Can't believe it's another Rugby World Cup again. Wendell Sailor must be spewin' right now!

Naturally, I'll be going for the Wallabies, but think the All Blacks this year are good chance to win it.

I prefer League too, binnie. But always hop on the Rugby bandwagon every 4 years. :)

Yeah, me too.

I'll watch it, but I'll spend most of my time shouting at the TV "why are they kicking it so much?" or "why can't they fucking tackle properly?" lol.

Seriously though, I am looking forward to it. I think the All Blacks will win, but some of the other teams are on great form too...

My brother's going to the Fiji/Canada match in Cardiff. Lucky bastard. To be able to see the mighty Canadian rugby machine in action.

Canada all the way!!

Fuck, even I can't stop laughing.

I've got no favorite; just love watching the game. The World Cup is about the only Rugby that gets any coverage over here. We might get to see a dozen games, which will have to do.

:D Well said. The Italian team was hired years ago, to make 6 national teams, and I still wonder about the accuracy of their presence, though they beat Scotland a couple of times.
But I'm talking Tournament here, sorry.

I've just checked the result of the 2nd test match between France and England... :D

France 22:09 England

I never could stand the English team, ever since I got interested in rugby in the early 1980s. It always rejoices me when they lose, with such scores in particular. 9 points means they didn't even score a try (fucking drop and penalty kickers  I hate that, that AIN'T rugby!)...

OK, it's only warm-up, but I sense the English will sink fast this time - at least I hope so.

I'm no chauvinist at all. I hope the Irish will go far. If the French develop their open game, they will have my support as well, though.
Both France and Ireland offer beautiful, ballsy rugby games.

The Blacks seem to be the strongest 15. But let's not forget the Aussie team, though they happen to have been better than they are this year. The South Africans could also do very well.
Anyway, it hasn't begun yet, so anything goes. :)

I'd really dig it if the Clover won this Cup.

I wish they will get out of the woods. I was hooked during the 1995 Cup, especially the final against France, which was a great match and a model of fair play - not to mention the ambiance in the stadium, Mandela, De Clercq... What a memory. :)

Since they won the Tri Nations competition in 2004, the South Africans have done less and less well. This year they practically hit bottom, so it would be surprising if they did anything great in Frogland.

They're pretty strong this year. Remember, they always did at least the semis, and often reached the final, even. ;)

As for the crowds, there will be a "fair" proportion of dumbass chauvinists in them, even though the actual rugby fans aren't - but the World Cup effect will draw non rugby fans, which will get the support rowdier.

If the French team could reach those finals in the southern hemisphere, how wouldn't they eventually win the Cup when it takes place in their gardens? ;)

Yup. The French were very impressive, especially in defense - they deserved particualr credit for the speed with which their defensive line smothered the opposition.

They will be hard to beat.

However, I watched South Africa-Scotland, and South Africa were immense: easily the most physical side I've seen going into the tournament, they consistently tackled HARD - it was almost like watching Rugby League :)

Seriously though, South Africa will be the team to beat in this competition, and must be the second favourites behind the All Blacks.

I guess they will be duly welcomed, as other teams will. Anywhere you go, rugby supporters aren't like soccer ones, for that matter.

But let's not make the Blacks feel too much like at home... They'll be hard enough to defeat, so they really don't need any help in whatsoever. :D

I'd be glad if the South-African team did well, if they won the Cup, even.
But Scotland has fallen pretty low over the past 2 years, which must have made the Boks look stronger than they would have if opposed to Ireland for instance. ;)

As for the Wallabies, they will be at least in the last four, so will the Blacks and the Blue. It's very easy to tell when it's about rugby. :)

They are as inconsistent as France these days.

It's all a bit weird. You have no idea what you are going to get at each game, they can be completely shit or great.

The new coach has got them working out like fuck so now we have one of the heaviest packs in the world which is weird because traditionally we relied on speed.

Also apparently even though the competition is in France we get a couple of games at home???

As I said its strange.

I'm not a rugby expert but I would surprised if we get much further than the initial group stage.

Who knows, rugby is a strange game whereby you seem to get a lot more upsets than in football.

Assuming Scotland don't win I'll be supporting France.

As far as the England thing goes here's an example.:)

When I was a student I came back to my apartment and there was all this shouting and swearing coming from the lounge where the TV was.

"Come on"

"For fuck sake get into these cunts!"

"Fuck get a grip, hold hold, oh Jesus fucking Christ!

"YEEEEESSSS!"

"Right fuck you bitch!"

Turned out my flatmates were watching a ladies netball game on TV, England v. Malaysia.

Cheers!

Too much pressure for France.

After winning the proper World Cup in 1998 on home soil their press assumed that they would win this one.

I wish I had put some money on Argentina in hindsite it was a really good bet.

They have been getting better each year and for fuck sake these are the people that literally eat each other in a difficult situation...:)

I do like surprises of that kind too - I'm no chauvinist -, as it's so rare as far as international rugby.
I didn't see the match as sweetie took me to the pictures, but it must have been a drag to see that game. I mean, props to the Argentinos for winning, but the Blue must have made mistake after mistake...

If the Irish team beat the French, which I would dig to see, Argentina and Ireland would go through. All those self-proclaimed, narrow-minded, blue-white-red cock-a-doodle-doo fucks would get what they desserve. :D

Ireland won't be taken by surprise by the Pumas, IMO.
Things already got very complicated for France yesterday night. The Irish will be ready for them, that's for sure.
Come what may, anyway, just as long as there's great game on the grounds, which wasn't the case apparently yesterday night.

The ABs Pissed All Over The Italian Team Last Night 76-14.

We Let In Two Soft Tries In The Game,Which Were Mistakes By Taking A Chance At Trying To Open Up The Italian Line.

Good To See The Boys On Fire And Working As A Team.

People Would Say That The Italian Side Was An Easy Game But They Showed They Never Gave Up And played The Whole Game Until The End.

France played badly, that is true. But the Argies played like their lives depended on it: in open play, they get such a rhythm going, and have such fluidity with the ball, that they can really hit people on the break. They will present a lot of "big" teams with problems if they continue to play like that.

Ok, England vs America was laughable. The English team even look bad against a group of part-timers now! I was impressed with the American team, but England just couldn't do anything right: missed tackels, piss poor line outs, dropped balls. They will struggle to get out of their group.

South Africa are going to absolutely spank England on Friday, they looked deadly in the second half against Samoa. Now the first half was close, and if Samoa had been awarded the try in the first five minutes of the second (it was a try, no question) then it would have been a close second half too, but Samoan spirits were broken. Despite the sscore-line, I think Samoa were still an impressive side. I also predict that they will beat England.

binnie
09-10-2007, 07:00 AM
Ireland are the biggest dissapointments so far. They couldn't do anything right yesterday and should have EASILY put 50 points on the board. How difficult is it to catch a ball? Seems to me that they were trying to hard a forcing the ball, but their forwards didn't look very powerful going forward, and their backs made some appalling decisions.

I was really expecting them to well in this tournament, but they will really have to improve to beat Argentina. Hopefully France will play like dog-shit when they meet: the only plus side for Ireland is that France haven't played that well either.

I'd say that Scotland were also a little disapointing, and should never have conceded a try against Portugal. But at least they played with some passion yesterday, even if they did make some appauling mistakes - that's more than England can say.

binnie
09-10-2007, 07:02 AM
I've been most impressed with the All Blacks and South Africa so far. I think the Springbocks might be the team to beat, lots of pace in the backs and great power and conditioning in the forwards.

I don't think Australia's demolition of Japan tells us anything, and I 'll wait for their second game before passing judgement....

Rugby World Cup Rules

DEAR WOMEN

*List of Rules (Read and print them)*

1. From 7 Sept to 20 October 2007, you should read the sports section of the newspaper so that you are aware of what is going on regarding the Rugby World Cup, and that way you will be able to join in the conversations. If you fail to do this, then you will be looked at in a bad way, or you will be totally ignored. DO NOT complain about not receiving any attention.

2. During the Rugby World Cup, the television is mine, the VCR and DVD are all mine, at all times, without any exceptions. If you even take a glimpse at the remote control, you will lose it (your eye).

3. If you have to pass by in front of the TV during a game, I don’t mind, as long as you do it crawling on the floor and without
distracting me. If you decide to stand nude in front of the TV, make sure you put clothes on right after because if you catch a cold, I won’t have time to take you to the doctor or look after you during the Rugby World Cup month.

4. During the games I will be blind, deaf and mute, unless I require a refill of my drink or something to eat. You are out of your mind if you expect me to listen to you, open the door, answer the telephone, or pick up the baby that just fell from the second floor….it won’t happen.

5. It would be a good idea for you to keep at least 2 six packs in the fridge at all times, as well as plenty of things to nibble on, and please do not make any funny faces to my friends when they come over to watch the games. In return, you will be allowed to use the TV between 12pm and 3pm, unless they replay a good game that I missed during the day.

6. Please, please, please!! If you see me upset because one of my teams is losing, DO NOT say “get over it, it’s only a game”, or “don’t worry, they’ll win next time”. If you say these things, you will only make me angrier and I will love you less. Remember, you will never ever know more about rugby than me and your so called “words of encouragement” will only lead to a break up or divorce.

7. You are welcome to sit with me to watch one game and you can talk to me during halftime but only when the commercials are on, and only if the halftime score is pleasing me. In addition, please note I am saying “one” game, hence do not use the Rugby World Cup as a nice cheesy excuse to “spend time together”.

8. The replays of the tries are very important I don’t care if I have seen them or I haven’t seen them, I want to see them again. Many times, and record them.

9. Tell your friends NOT to have any babies, or any other child related parties or gatherings that requires my attendance because:
a) I will not go,
b) I will not go, and
c) I will not go.

10. But, if a friend of mine invites us to his house on a Sunday to watch a game, we will be there in a flash.

11. The daily RWC highlights show on TV every night is just as important as the games themselves. Do not even think about saying “but you have already seen this…why don’t you change the channel to something we can all watch??”, the reply will be: “Refer to Rule #2 of this list”.

12.And finally, please save your expressions such as “Thank goodness the Rugby World Cup is only every 4 years”. I am immune to these words because after this comes the 2011 RWC etc.

13. Do not complain that my new beard is “scratchy” or makes me “look like a caveman”. Showing my support for the Springboks by growing a beard is more important to me than our relationship. If you don’t love your country as much as me, then that makes me sad, and you should leave. Quietly and during the ads if possible.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Regards,

Men of the World Cup

LOL Grant.

I'm much more a football than a rugby fan so over the years I've got to the point where she knows that Scotland internationals even obscure pointless friendlies are non negotiable.

I go to the pub or the ground to watch them and that's the end of it. I wouldn't dream of watching them in the house because I know she would want to talk to me or something.

With there only being about 8 games a year I think she realised it wasn't such a sacrifice.

As far as the RWC goes the same rule kicks in at the quarter finals...:)

Sesh... You must be sort of drunk by now!... :D

I went to the pub with my bandmates after our rehearsal, I left at half-time because I don't really care... but how merry I feel now I've read about the Scots's victory in Paris! How amazing (and rejoicing: I'm always for Scotland, Eire and Wales whatever sport it is)... Before leaving, I said: "Italy, Ukraine in the group... If they lose tonight, it's over for them". The pub owner replied: "They have to win. They can't lose". I said: "OK. But they might not win, you know..." :D
And Scotland now tops the ranking! :)

As for rugby, I look forward to watching the SEMIS, honestly. Too many uninteresting matches, really. The last four, and quick! :)

Warm malty aroma. LIght amber color. Fulsome white head that persists, releasing lacing. Starts thin with a malt charactistic, reminiscent of a cream or milk stout. There’s even a hint of chocolate in the middle. The finest New Zealand hops are not prominent, perhaps not present. Still, it is very pleasant for a lager. Budweiser should be so inviting. A propo flavor, check out the antique beechwood staves (dry as a bone) used by Anheuser. Anyway, I can drink the Lion.

Seems that the last four will be the Blacks, the Boks, the Wallabies and the Blue, the latter looking like they can make it that far eventually - but they'll be stopped in the semis by any of the three others. At least I guess the draw leads to that perspective.

New Zealand - South Africa is the obvious ideal final IMO, as far as what's been shown on the grounds so far.

The All Blacks didn't even play that well! There is no other team in the world that can alternate from playing like shit to sheer brilliance in the space of 30 seconds.

They weren't at their best and still dominated a team of Scotlands calibre - if Carter's kicking had been up to scratch, it would have been nearly 50-0.

Although I still think that South Africa are the team to beat, as they look so solid, but if the All Blacks can kick out the kinks then no-one can beast them.

Anyone see England-Samoa?

What a difference Wilkinson makes, lol!

Damn they are reliant on him, not only to score points with his boot, but also to make play on the field (he's the onyl player they have who can).

At least England proved that they can score tries (although they were very lucky with their first), but they are still a piss-poor team really. Still too slow for my mind, no-one has anypace and it will cost them against the likes of Australia, NZ and SA.

But I don't think they'll get that far: I think Tonga will beat them to be honest.

It is pretty negative isn't it? Having said that, it didn't look like the All Blacks were taking it that seriously, there wasn't much urgency about them a lot of the time.

The ig question is will Australia embarass England more than South Africa did?

I don't think so, as England are a lort stronger with Wilkinson making a little bit of play (and it is a little, they are still way too reliant on his boot) and kicking goals.

I think the Aussies, like South Africa, will have way, way too much pace for England, who are possibly the slowest team left.

Austrailia have been getting better with every game Dan.

Long time no see you around here! I hope you're still doing well!

Bordeaux... Gironde, "somehow" part of the French Rugby land. ;)

FTR: Rugby is essentially practised below the river Loire (roughly, the southern part of France), though there's a big club in Paris - but it's "artificial".
It's strange, BTW, as the northern part is closer to Great Britain, and the best lawns are in the north too. There must be an explanation to that, maybe Jano knows?

Ok, that was a good game to watch. The result was partly the result of luck for France, and a lack of creativity from the Blacks.

The first try was a result of the All Blacks losing a man to the sin bin for no real reason: he didn't run into the Frecnch player, he just didn't move out of the way. That was a poor decision.

The second try was the result of a forward pass from Michelet (it went froward 2 meters). The ref didn't see it, but the camera doesn't lie. incredible break from Michelet though.

I'm not taking anything away from the French, they played very, very well and showeed real heart. I'm just poiting out that lady luch was most definately on their side.

However, the All Blacks weren't creative enough: they had 70% of the possession and didn't win. A large part of the blame is with themselves.

I couldn'r understand why they kept driving it down the middle in the second half: ok, it got them one try, but that doens't mean that the French will succom again! They have best backs in the world, why not use them?

Well, I hate the way the English play Rugby (Union), but they absolutely deserved to win that game as the French had nothing. France's problem has always been consitency. I have been really impressed with the heart shown by the England team in their last two games: they have played with passion, but sadly not with any flair (ie they rely on Wilkinson's boot too much).

Seems to me that if England go on to win the whole tournament against South Africa in the final then it will make for one hell of a story: from the team rightly writtren off after playing like dogshit in their first two games and getting embarrassed by SA, to one that improved with every game and won against the odds.

Now, I can't see them beating SA but then again I couldn't see them beating Tonga, and was sure that Australia were going to spank them, and that France were going to have too much pace and flair for them - perhaps they can do it.

Whilst I've said since before the World Cup that SA would be the team to beat, they have been wobbled a few times, and England will clearly have a point to prove after 36-0.

However, SA have to get past Argentina first. Whilst I think they will achieve that, Argentian have been formidable so far, and have a spectacualr defence, so we could have (yet another) upset.

The Boks looked bloody impressive - we have to remember that Argentina have been a very good team and they were beaten quite convincingly.

The Boks have been rocked in the tournament, and the Argies did best when they used their speed to chase them down (England won't be able to do this as they as slower).

I'd say England will lose the final, but you never know.

Missed the England v France game. Saw the highlights though. That try to England was literally handed to them on a platter through that dreadful mistake by that French player. I bet he sure is kicking himself silly over it now.

Great performance by the Boks! This indeed is going to be a very interesting final. Since it's obvious that England is pretty much so far still relying on Wilkinson for getting the points on board, up against South Africa's flair in the play the ball should make them think again about their game plan. Or vice versa?

As far as I'm concerned, this is anyone's game.

Whilst SA have been rocked in this tournament, they have always pulled it back and won. They just have way too much pace for England, and seem to be amazing at punishing mistakes.

The English football team is a joke, when was the last time they won anything major? And yet football gets all of the attention. So if the Rugger-Buggers do win then I think that the nation deserves to applaud them (to an extent) given that it is at least one sport they are at least half decent at.

I agree entirely however that the English play boring rugby - I doubt there are few people who would disagree. It is not very exciting to watch, and they are frankly predictable. For that alone, I would be more than happy if the Boks win, as they have played physical and exciting rugby all tournament.

Your reference to "the Nazi's" made me crack up!

34 : 10 !!! :D

I didn't watch that match for some reason, but heard about the result on my way back home... What a humiliation! 5 tries to 1! Argentina tread on France, nothing else to say!

Go the Boks!

Yeah, Argies were great. France played their final against the ABs. They are mad geniuses I reckon - brilliant one game, insane the next.

Ok, the Final. I hoping the Boks will win. Agree with others that England will be unbearable if they win again. I think England will do their best to squeeze the life out of the Boks. IF the Bok forwards gain supremecy they will win. If England forwards do, England will win.

Please God or Satan, let it be the Boks!!

2011: us kiwi's will be faced with the same situation as every world cup (except the first) - high hopes, great team, but no world cup. It's ok we're used to it. Consistantly the best team in the world, but just don't know how to win the cup. I still love them.

Missed the game. I was banking on Argies to win, but I didn't get to put a bet on, I would've been a rich man if I did, the betting agencies here had the French as favourites. I'll have to try catch a repeat of the game.

It will be unbearable if England win again. I still remember all the boasting Poms in the pubs here during the last World Cup...and many weeks after the final.

Too bad you won't ca$h in, Grant!
I read about the match this morning in the French press, they say it was a terrible match to watch... :D
OK, maybe it was terrible, but had the Blue won, under the same circomstances, I mean, the same game on the ground, they would find it fine... I'll never understand those chauvinists, they're no real sports fans, I say!

Not a great game but that was no surprise.

THey need to do something about the rules of rugby or something like making penalties worth 2 points because it just isn't as entertaining to watch as it used to be.

I agree!!! Or even 6 points a try, at that!

Damn... I remember following the V Nations back around 1980, 1981... It was still 4 points for a try and 3 for penalties and drops... but you saw great games, teams charging for the fucking line (especially the Welsh and the French) - or is my memory a bit wrong?

There were only about two real attempts at getting a try tonight.

It's fucking tedious.

Through the 90s this is the way England games have always been but it now seems to have spread to all games.

Cheers, Dan! BTW, the team that would have saved it by playing Rugby in the final are the All Blacks, for sure... They would never have locked the game, played kicks just as necessary, and set the field on fire! I mean, the only team that could have played that way, the way Rugby is supposed to be played, AND won...

When anybody tells me about "the Rugby World Cup", I'll say: "The last one was in 1999, when is the next one to take place?"
