It's always a gamble saying a favorite, but at this moment, my favorite for awhile has been Bill Laswell.

He's produced many albums for other artists as well as performed in bands including The Golden Palominos and Material.

I don't recall the bass as heavy in GP, but Material's "One Down" album is one where you don't want a subwoofer turned on or the bass will drown everything else out!

I wonder how he gets that specific sound of his.

Pretty much the usual suspects from me: Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, Geddy Lee, Geezer Butler. I also enjoy Paul McCartney, Sting (Police days), Michael Anthony (gasp!), and Mike Inez.

Wow - so many great bass players! Mine range from Jazz to Rock. Let's get the obvious out of the way: Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Enstwistle, JP Jones, Mike Rutheford, I loved Fran Sheehan on those first two Boston albums, Tony Levin, the guy from Little Feat, Kenny Gradney, Roger Waters, Walter Becker, Sting, Brian Wilson (Carol Kaye?), Paul McCartney....there has to be more...

But Jazz/Fusion is where its at for bass players. John Pattituci, Stan Clarke, Marcus Miller, Jaco, that guy from the Dregs, Andy West, and his replacement, Dave La Rue, Steve Rodby, Abe Laboriel, Jeff Berlin, Chuck Rainey, Pino Palladina (sp?), Anthony Jackson, Jimmy Haslip...surely there are more I am forgetting.

And then there are the funksters: Larry Grahm, Bernard Edwards (bass player for Chic, not Project Homicide :D ), James Jamerson, Bootsy...

Hard to pick a favorite but if I had to, who was that woman (girl?) Hardrock posted the other day - never heard her play but she's my favorite!!! Her or Derek Smalls. :D

I'm not that familiar with Laswell's work, but I liked his contribution to Johnny Rotten's 1985 release "Album", which featured an all star version of "PiL" with Laswell on bass and producing, Steve Vai on guitar, and Ginger Baker on drums.

Now that's a band you don't see every day. Too bad that lineup never toured, but at least Vai had the excuse of moving on to another worthy gig.

If you believe the current official rendition of Boston history, that was all Tom Scholz in the studio, and Fran never played a note on the records.

To my ear, the bass playing sounds different on Third Stage, which we KNOW was Scholz, so draw your own conclusions.

Yes - I am aware of the controversy. It even sounds like the drums were recorded on separate tracks (i.e. someone played the bass and snare and added the hi-hat and ride).

But to my ears anyway, the bass lines sound like hey were composed and played by an experienced bass player, not a guitar player just laying down a basic bottom end. There is some really tasteful stuff in there - reminds me a lot of JP Jones, which often gets overlooked because of the amazing guitar work.

Based on the number of responses, bass seems more popular than the standard guitar thread LOL!

Ford, what was this album? I have the original PIL "Album", but never heard of a workaround with other musicians?

Then why did Fran sue Scholz with three other Boston members as Tom moved from CBS to MCA for "Third Stage?"

"Boston disintegrates (1979-1983)
In mid-1979, Scholz began writing new material and recording in the studio. In the meantime, Goudreau decided to record a solo project and later produced a solo album which featured Boston members Delp and Hashian. The album was titled simply "Barry Goudreau" and featured a minor hit with the single "Dreams."

CBS began marketing the Goudreau project as "Almost Boston", a move which angered Scholz who sought to reduce corporate support for the Goudreau project behind the scenes (Boston Magazine, 2006).The label eventually dropped Goudreau's album, citing lack of interest. Goudreau later claimed Scholz attempted to derail his solo career. Goudreau, Hashian and Sheehan all filed lawsuits against Scholz, which were later settled out of court for back royalties.

Scholz claimed that Goudreau, Hashian, and Sheehan had attempted to wrest the Boston name away from him, in order to continue on as Boston with Goudreau as the only guitarist. He also claimed that this attempt to remove him from Boston was done with the knowledge and assistance of Epic/CBS.The case later went to trial and Scholz emerged victorious over the record label. Scholz has stated on numerous occasions that this process left him extremely jaded and wary of record labels and outside musicians."

Just playing.....

My favorites are:
Stu Hamm
Billy Sheehan
Les Claypool
Victor Wooten
Rosco Beck
Jerry Scheff
Pete Perez
Willie Dixon
Gene Simmons
And of course, Michael Anthony.
Since I play more like Simmons & Anthony, I would have to say that they were my main influences.

And that surprises you? It takes a “real man” to play those big ass strings. The low end frequency gets your body moving, not them whiny cat noises those annoying guitar players make. The girls believe the guitar players make them feel all warm inside, but us bass players know it’s our low end that makes them tingle inside. :D

One more thing. The next time you guitar players go to practice, thank your bass player. Because they hold down the rhythm section while you get to scat over a song and get all the credit. And to top it all off. You get to do a “solo” with the spotlight only on you and your sound cranked up a little louder than the rest of us. Who made these rules? :(

Listen to 'Burning Love' by Elvis Presley, Steve. That's Jerry Scheff. He was Elvis' bass player for many years (mostly 70s).

It's really too bad all this legal bullshit happenned and "Dreams" wasn't a bigger hit, so people would automatically associate the title with this song, and not that Van Hagar piece of shit.

Even this chewed up, fucked up video proves it was a much better song, officially Boston or not.......

I haven't listened to that band in AGES! I used to love them around the time Worlds Apart came out and bought up their older releases too. I guess I lost interest around "I'm the Flyer"...not because of the band and where it was going, but because I was growing up and my musical tastes were changing. Canadian's sure had/have their prog down tight, eh? Dig the Kramer bass - a true relic.
