1) Ramones - It's Alive
To me this is 'Punk Rock' Buzzsaw guitar at max!
If you are gonna buy one Ramones CD then make it this one.
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002N2N.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
2) Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks
Huge production job done on this making it sound more like a rock album than a punk album.
But what a fucking huge guitar sound & Johnny Rotten at the top of his game this was history in the making.
This still stands the test of time today. Buy or Die!

3) The Stranglers IV- Rattus Norvegicus
The other side of punk rock, Rattus Norvegicus IV still sounds fresh and vital today.
Download this illegally & change your life today!

BREAK THE SURFACE GUYS!!! There's better stuff than The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and Dead Kennedys!
Punk rock is pretty much all I listen to...
Check out Headed for Another Breakdown by Cheap Sex.
This one is a bit on the ska punk side but Destruction by Definition by The Suicide Machines.
And ofcourse the greatest band of all time other than the Mighty Van Halen, there is Goldfinger. Punk, Ska punk, and even some reggae here and there. They are at the top of my list.

Au contraire, it was McLaren who was the poser. The Pistols just wanted to play their music. It was McLaren who made it all about the image machine.

fair enough mclaren was a fuck. But i still feel that the sex pistols ruined punk because after them everyone thought that they were the apitanmy(sp?) of punk when in fact dead boys damned new york dolls and the ramones were real punk.

good list. I own that minor threat cd, but I dont like them because of their whole straight edge stuff, and how they look down upon anyone who isnt straight edge.
Yeah, they took the straight edge thing to almost a militant level. In retrospect, it probably had a lot to do with Ian MacKaye figuring himself out and coming out of the closet, which obviously wasn't an easy thing to do at the peak of Reaganism and the influence of the religious reich.

My picks:
The Clash - Self Titled debut
Dead Boys - Young, Loud and Snotty
Fear - Self Titled (just because no one's mentioned them yet)
BTW, although they weren't strictly punk, one of my top 5 favorite bands ever was The Lords Of The New Church. The band featured Brian James from The Damned and Stiv Bator from The Dead Boys on guitar and vox respectively. I highly recommend their debut album if you can find it. Also, I have several very rare Lords vids on my YouTube account for anyone interested:

Truth is, and I'm sad to admit this, I'd actually forgotten about them. They used to play GBH a lot on the college radio station back when I was in high school, but I could never find their records. And I'll admit I was never into them like I was DOA, Black Flag, DK's, or Social D.
But any band of that era that's still going strong is gonna get my respect.
Damn it's hard to find fucking Misfits videos!! Here's what I could find.......

I like what I see.
BUT LONG LIVE STIV BATORS!!
Possibly the best frontman in Punk Rock history. Dead Boys, Wanderers, Lords of the New Church, and his solo career were good. I dig the wanderers alot.
