I've had to do a lot of training that was explicit and frankly GROSS. But the training we went through involving homosexuality in males was just horrifying and confusing. I thought (and still think) those parents and psychiatrists are just plane sick and should be shot. But when I spoke about it to my cousin (a Doctor in psychiatry), she explained to me the devastating effects that such a "mistake of nature" can have on a person, if not cured. She didn't say that a sex change WAS the solution but claimed that people DO get born in the wrong body gender sometimes.

Still... I want to shoot these parents and all the ones that contributed to that "solution" to his problem. The boy was not of legal age and that decision was taken way too fast!

That's my humble opinion but I keep on thinking; Thank God my parents didn't take me seriously when I was answering that I really wanted to be Barbie when I grow up! They would have removed half of my brains to make sure I became a real bimbo :confused:...

I say tell the child about the family that came before a history of how he got here family can be a good base of understanding and find out the childs weeknesses and strenghts and work both.

As a parent of a teenager, all I can say is that they go through several stages of "I wanna be when I grow up". And it can get a little unnerving sometimes.

But basically, I agree with you BG that his parents should have never given in to his desires at such a young age. Especially when it comes to the sex change issue. The brain is still forming and absorbing information so there's no way that child would know the difference between having boy parts and having girl parts other than the asthetics. And having tampered with something so deeply rooted, what kind of attitude is he going to have about intimacy in adult life?

If your child wants to dress up and behave like a member of the opposite sex at 7 or even 11 years old, chances are better that it's just a "phase" in childhood than some serious identity crisis. And whatever you do, any emphatic emotions from the parents will attach an interest. i.e. yanking a barbie out of your son's hands and saying something like, "Boys don't play with dolls!" in an angered tone will tell that child that there's "mystery" in what he just did.

Kids are constantly doing things for reactionary purposes only and if you avoid the knee-jerk response, you'll do a lot better at teaching. And that's what parents want to do anyway, is teach.
