I could say Ed, back in the ahem... '78-'8 (okay, the uptempo 5150 songs I can handle).
Joe Satriani
Rik Emmett for that solo in Rock N' Roll machine.
Vinnie Moore.
Not sure it's the playing or songwriting, but I could also Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick.

Well, maybe if he'd put out more than one record every 10 years. And then when he does, at least make it sound like Boston (which only 3 songs on the last one did, and NONE on the one before that did)

Seriously though.... I think Scholz is better on the technical sound he produces than his actual guitar playing. No doubt that the man is a technology genius, as the inventor of both the "Rockman" and the Polaroid "One Step" camera (it was huge in the 70's, even before the first Boston record)

BTW - I'm still waiting for the guitarist that can play Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" in Stevie Ray Vaughan's rendition. When that day arrives....we'll know we are in the presence of the next God chosen #1 six-stringer IMO..
