I still listen to these guys. Not hard rock, but a very tallented band that had some classic songs. And I was lucky enough to see them before the lead singe died. Anyone else get into INXS??

Quality band. They should have left it alone after Hutchence died. The whole Rock Star thing was kinda disturbing.

Why are there so many bands who refuse to acknowledge the importance of the lead singer?

I'd seen INXS with Michael 3 times and thought that when he died that it was a shame that the rest of the band had to fold up their tent and call it a day. It wasn't their fault that Michael couldn't get off with a lil' groupie love instead of hanging himself while beating off!

With that being said, I followed the Rockstar INXS show. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of it at first expecially when they had a 50/50 mix of male/female singers. My 1st thought was that they would alienate 1/2 of the crowd right there because the women loved Michael, and the guys looked at him like he was the 2nd coming of Jim Morrison. He left big shoes to fill. My wife picked JD Fortune as the winner after the 1st episode. She kept saying after each episode that he was "the one". When he wrote the song "Pretty Vegas" I had a strong feeling that he was going to be the one too. The band KNEW it was gonna be a hit song.

Fast forward to the release of the album "Switch" and I think that it ranks right up there with all of the other INXS releases. We were able to catch them at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater and again at the House of Blues in Orlando. JD Fortune is not Michael. He can cover his voice and sing his songs but he's not him and he knows it. He's himself and it was nice to see him grow with the band inbetween tour stops here in Florida. He was more confident both with his voice and with his swagger than the last time we saw them.

I lump INXS with Queen and The Rolling Stones. What is a fully functional band minus a singer supposed to do? Just live off of the royalties and never create anything? The bands have history with each other, they know what each member is going to do in the studio and on stage. They're not Van Halen, Judas Priest or Black Sabbath with the bickering and bad blood battles that put fans in the middle of something that shouldn't even be there. They create the mucis and we listen to it.

With all of that said, I'm looking forward to JD's solo album and the next INXS release. They've already commited to them so what the hell, let's see what they've got.

Liked the band - never a huge fan or anything... but good music IMHO. I didn't really think there would ever be a reunion after Mike's death... heard about the Rock Star deal and thought I'd watch some - got hooked and enjoyed it.... I figured JD was the guy but the blonde headed fellow (forgot his name already) was going to give him a run.... just that he didn't seem to fit the part - JD's swagger was more in line. So they got him - of course, after pretty vegas - he was a lock anyway. I thought the new album was OK ... I would give the next one a listen... otherwise.

DAVE OR THE GRAVE BABY...... VAN HALEN LIVES ON!!!!

I'm glad they didn't do the reality show -- they always had the best lead singer.... just didn't know til recently to get him back on board.

And there's the relevant point.

I can't blame the guys in INXS for wanting to make music, but they should have dropped the name. Michael Hutchence was INXS to even more of a degree than David Lee Roth is Van Halen. The musicians in INXS are good, but there's no obvious standout like Eddie Van Halen among them, and certainly nobody with the name "INXS" on their birth certificate.

As for the Rock Star thing, I thought the black guy (forget his name) was better than JD, but I can't say I was too shocked by the outcome.

was a fan from probably the first time i saw 'em on MTV. went to the Kick, X, and Elegantly Wasted shows here. Hutchence was pretty fucked up at the last one...he was rolling around on the floor lookin' up the backup singers skirts...

Hutchence could work the room, man. just have everyone hangin' on whatever he did. and they could line up three guitarists and do the chainsaw thing or the syncopated rhythm thing...very versatile band.

they probably could have gone on as the Farriss Brothers but name recognition is everything.

watched Rockstar and thought that JD was a little whiny crybaby pussy. i didn't like him and did not buy Switch, did not see the show. i am waiting for him to go solo and leave them without a singer again. i can't believe he hasn't walked yet.

As an Aussie, its blasphemous to even contemplate
them replacing Michael Hutchence.

But I have to grudgingly admit that JD is doing ok...
I agree with a lot of what Doc MadVibe says..

If you look back at the history of the band, its
a little like Van Halen. The core of the band is
the Farriss brothers (3 of em),
INXS was actually called the Farriss brothers originally.

I saw all the Australian interviews with these
guys after Michael's death, and to say they
were devastated, is a massive understatment,
they loved that guy bigtime.

I think they respectfully held back (like Queen)
and the natural musicians in them took over
the decisions..

I can see arguments for and against calling
themselves INXS with JD. Does anyone know
if Michael came up with that name?, if he did
then I think they should drop it..

If it was the brothers that came up with it,
well, what can you say ??

Its never going to be the same, but like AC/DC
they have done a good job in finding a replacement.
(After a respectful absence)

For the record, INXS is not my type of music, but
there is no doubting the craftsmanship in their work..
Some of their songs are brilliant. Chill inducing...
I dont go out of my way to play em, but when I hear
them, I listen with respect..

I say good luck to them..

Not bad ! Got that silky soul vox thing a-happening..
That would have worked on a lot of their stuff..

I missed the Rock Star series for INXS, only saw
the snippets online, we got the second series

(With Tommy Lee, Storm, Toby, Dilana and who
can forget the "Who the fuck is that dude who
reckons he is from Guns and Roses, guy")

Great show, shame about the last series self
imploding.. (That Lucas dude sucked)

Digressing again !
(ADD like Dave Roth on crack at the moment)

"Afterglow" with JD sounds like a classic INXS
song to me.. I would think the old INXS fans
would be ok with JD...

I can't believe a TV show starring INXS didn't air in Australia. You would think they would make that a dealbreaker in the contracts.

Oddly enough, if I remember correctly, about half of the auditioning singers, including JD, were Canadians.

Actually thinking back, I remember all you guys posting about

INXS was the Farris Bros band. If you don't know that then you might want to go back and look at who wrote the songs.

Ty had the right vibe to pull it off its just when he would go on his runs he would jazz it up, he probably would've added to the attendence numbers by drawing in fans that weren't otherwise. He showed his ass when he was axed and revealed a side that wasn't even in their decision making process. They did like Ty up to that point, and I felt he would have a working band by now. His attitude towards INXS prolly sank that dream.

This song is saying bye to Michael and hello to JD. During this performance they had a screen and at the end of the song there was Michael walking towards the back of the stage...walking into the light. At the end of the song the lights stayed down for awhile.

If you were a fan of them before then you won't have a problem listening to "Switch". I thought it was better than "Welcome To Wherever You Are" and "Dirty Moon, Dirty Hearts". It was also much better than Mike's solo albums too. To me the solos showed that he could write some lyrics, but it was the proxy wall of the Farriss Bros committe that made the magic.

J.D. Fortune is the stage name of Jason Dean Bennison (born September 1, 1973 in Mississauga, Ontario), a Canadian rock singer, winner of the 2005 CBS reality television series Rock Star: INXS, and the current singer of rock band INXS for their latest album Switch.
He was born in Mississauga, Ontario, and raised in Salt Springs, Pictou County, Nova Scotia. J.D. grew up listening to his grandfather sing and started performing at a very young age. He attended Cawthra Park Secondary School and West Pictou Consolidated School but dropped out before graduating. He was living in his car when he applied for and was offered a job on CBS's TV show, Rock Star: INXS. Bennison is his estranged fatherŐs name, and Fortune is his motherŐs maiden name. He has a sister, Sarah-Jane, and a pug named Presley.

After several years in and out of the music world, he finally began to strike gold as an original musician. Fortune drew bigger and bigger audiences, ultimately performing at the Friendship Festival and at Toronto's Skydome in front of tens of thousands of people. He also works as an entertainer and pop songwriter for an Ontario TV show.

A vegetarian and a smoker, he has worked as a martial arts teacher, Elvis impersonator, and served in the Canadian military. For a time, before seeking the role with INXS, Fortune lived and co-owned a business in Oakville, Ontario.

Fortune currently is single. He had a brief relationship with Estella Warren after shooting the video clip for INXS's single Afterglow.
On Friday April 7, 2006, J.D. appeared on Australian radio station Triple M with fellow band member, Tim Farriss. Speaking to Triple M's morning show team, The Cage, J.D. and Tim spoke of how much acceptance they are receiving as the new INXS, especially in the United States and Canada. J.D. said that he had always dreamed of singing INXS songs in front of thousands of people where they all sing the words right back at him but he never thought he'd see the day. J.D. sang acoustic versions of their hit single Pretty Vegas and Mystify, an earlier INXS hit.

J.D. revealed that his first meeting with the brother of INXS' first lead singer, Michael Hutchence, who committed suicide, initially was a scary experience. "I met his brother Rhett in Australia a while ago and it wasn't pleasant. He was wearing a t-shirt saying, 'That's not my brother'. "His friend had a t-shirt which said, 'Mock Star: INXS'. I had to say something, like, 'You don't know me, I don't know you. We're just humans.'
"Something changed after that and, by the end of the night, it was a different story. Rhett took the t-shirt off and bought another one. He hugged me and said he was sorry."

He also stated his thoughts on Reality Television: "I think reality TV cheapens everything--I'm not a fan--but I tried to see past the audition process," J.D. said. "I went there because of Michael Hutchence and INXS."

"I want to pay homage to Michael, but I'm not trying to recapture the past. I'm trying to fill my own shoes."

Fortune is currently working on a solo album, Death of a Motivational Speaker, which is expected to hit shelves in the fall of 2007. He told the Australian Associated Press "It's the best stuff I have ever written".

J.D has several nicknames including Jay, Fame, The Kid and The Scorcerer.

He even said he isn't trying to be Michael...he just has to sing the same songs he sang.

You guys constantly surprise me.
I was a fan of INXS since I first saw the grainy video of "Original Sin". The more I heard the more I wanted to hear. I got my first glimpse of the band when "What you need" came out.

I hated it for the band when Hutch died. I knew that they'd never be able to rekindle that fire that he was. I loved the Rockstar show in that I was hoping that it was the chance to get some exposure and move on after several already failed attempts. But they lied.

On the show they touted that they were looking for something different. That's not what they did at all. They chose someone who could impersonate Hutch's voice. And when they did that, it led me to believe that the whole show was contrived. The next season proved that it was all contrived.

If INXS wanted to be successful again. They should've gone with a new sound in the lead singer, and recreate music. Not try to rehash the glory they had with Hutch.

I still feel sorry for them, and miss the band that they were. But I'm not accepting JD.

Yep, Dude could sing - but I just didn't think he would be a good fit - the mohawk doesn't work for me either... but that part is fixable

Anyone, know if he has latched on somewhere or doing a solo project?

love to hear more from him - but in a Rock band - not a pop group.

Just like Ac/Dc and Van Halen, INXS did their best work on their first 6 albums.

I don't agree with that statement at all.

Van Halen, maybe. I'm still holding on the notion that there's going to be another release with Dave.

AC/DC and INXS had the knack of putting atleast one very memorable song on each release.

AC/DC and INXS didn't have to put up with Spammy or Ga y either.

Granted, Brian Johnson is no Sammy Hagar, and Ac/Dc isn't bad with him, but they have made the same album over and over again for the last 27 years, where the 6 albums they made with Bon were all different records.

INXS went downhill after "Kick". Not as far as Van Haqar, of course, but it kinda seems like there was a lot of "retreads" on the later records.

And for the record, I am hoping that Van Halen releases their long awaited 7th album before this decade is over.

Tell me you wouldn't have been caught up in that one too?

He knew he was lucky and fortunate to have won that contest. He did everything possible to win as well. I don't remember him crying but I do remember him being really surprised and happy that he'd won.

It was definitely on Foxtel, not sure if it was on normal TV, I never watched it (not even a single episode). The 'Supernova' series was definitely on normal TV together with Foxtel, but it may have been a delayed broadcast.

I'm not really into the INXS stuff with Jon Stevens. I basically know bugger all about them with JD.

I can still remember vividly the day Michael died because it was the same day that my brother was getting married when we heard the news, and the Church he was getting married at wasn't far from the hotel where he died.

Last U2 concert I went to in Sydney, they had the massive
video screen (Pop tour I think from memory)
At the end of the show Bono paid a big tribute to Hutchence,
saying we were his people, his hometown, then they
played the "Tear us Apart" video on the big screen..

(After leaving the stage)

This was not that long after his death....

Obviously a lot of respect there.....

The Church was actually in Waverley which is close enough, the same one where Rove McManus got married to Belinda Emmett. When I think about that day kinda has a chill factor about it.

Oddly enough, if I remember correctly, about half of the auditioning singers, including JD, were Canadians.

What does that tell you!!!

I saw the Kick show here in Wpg in 1988. Great show and they sounded great. Always thought they were a good band with much talent.
JD is doing a good job. Just think, he was living in his Fucking car in down town Toronto 5 years ago!!:D
