Perino Defends Bush’s Lie: ‘The President Was Being Truthful!’

During the White House press briefing today, Press Secretary Dana Perino attempted to defend President Bush’s lie about when he first learned that Iran had halted its nuclear weapons program.

Recall, Bush originally stated that Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell came to him in August “and said, ‘We have some new information.’ He didn’t tell me what the information was.” But last night, Perino conceded he was told that Iran’s program “may be suspended.”

White House reporters repeatedly confronted Perino about this discrepancy in the press briefing this afternoon. Perino tried to claim that when Bush said he didn’t know what the information was, he actually meant, “he didn’t get any of the details of what — what the information was, in terms of what the actual raw intelligence was.” When reporters pressed her on this, an exasperated Perino said:

OK, look. I can see where you could see that the president could have been more precise in that language. But the president was being truthful.

Watch it:

During the briefing, Perino was also asked about the timeline of when Bush was briefed on the NIE. As ThinkProgress reported earlier this week, The New Yorker’s Seymour Hersh said that Bush spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert about the NIE on Monday, Nov. 26.

CNN’s Ed Henry asked Perino: “How could he brief Olmert on Monday about a report that he found out about on Wednesday?” Perino responded, “I don’t — I will check. I mean, it’s possible that he knew that there was information coming.”

Digg It!

Transcript:

QUESTION: Dana, on Tuesday at his press conference, when the president was asked about when he learned about Iran’s nuclear program being halted, was he being completely candid?

PERINO: Yes, he was. And I talked to you about that last night. I talked to your colleague this morning. And I’ll reiterate it here. If you look at the rest of that sentence, what the president is — the president was clearly told that there was new information that was coming in, but he wasn’t told the details of it. And the president was also told that the intelligence community was going to need to go back and check out to find out if it’s true.

What I said is that McConnell told the president if the new information turns out to be true, what we thought we knew for sure is right: Iran does, in fact, have a covert nuclear weapons program, but it may be suspended. He said that there were many streams of information that were coming in. They could potentially be in conflict. They didn’t have a lot of confidence in the information yet.

QUESTION: But the president said, quote, He didn’t tell me what the information was. But you’re now saying he was told that Iran may have halted its nuclear weapons program and also that there may be a new assessment, right?

PERINO: Right, but he doesn’t — he didn’t get any of the details of what — what the information was, in terms of what the actual raw intelligence was.

QUESTION: But he didn’t say details. he just said, He didn’t tell me what the…

PERINO: OK, look. I can see where you could see that the president could have been more precise in that language. But the president was being truthful.

QUESTION: Dana?

PERINO: Yes?

QUESTION: But listen to what he said. He didn’t tell me what the information was. He did tell me it was going to take a while to analyze. Was the president told that there was a possibility that Iran’s nuclear program could be suspended? That’s what you said he was told.

PERINO: Yes. The president was told that there is new information in the context of raw intelligence, not told the details of what it was. And told that he’s going to have — they’re going to have to go back and do some more checking on it because they didn’t have a high degree of confidence in it and it would — could potentially be in conflict.

QUESTION: But he said he didn’t know what the information even was. I can see the details of it, but…

PERINO: I grant you, he could have been more precise in his language.

But if you look at the follow-up — the following sentences of that quote, he says — I have it right here…

(CROSSTALK)

PERINO: He says that It would take a while to analyze it. And he’s referring to it in terms of what the information was. I think that…

QUESTION: But he said he didn’t know what the information was.

PERINO: He did not know what the specific details were of the raw intelligence that they had found.

[…]

QUESTION: Can you just clarify one more thing? What day was the president actually briefed on the NIE?

PERINO: I don’t know. I don’t know.

QUESTION: Well, because Mr. Hadley left the impression that it was last Wednesday.

PERINO: Oh, on the NIE, specifically?

QUESTION: On the NIE.

PERINO: Yes, last Wednesday.

QUESTION: Last Wednesday? OK. But there have been reports that the president briefed Prime Minister Olmert last week, maybe on Monday.

ERINO: I don’t know.

QUESTION: Did he brief Prime Minister Olmert? And how could he brief Olmert on Monday about a report that he found out about on Wednesday? Can you…

PERINO: I don’t — I will check. I mean, it’s possible that he knew that there was information coming; the intelligence community was checking it out…

QUESTION: (inaudible) just find out about it Wednesday, though, like, that this was out there?

PERINO: No, the president knew — no, think about it. Think about it. The president was told by McConnell that the NIE — he knew an NIE was coming. So he knew that NIE was going to have to be delayed, because they had gotten some new information — I’ll get to you in a second — that the NIE was coming, that they had to check things out; they had to do some more due diligence. And then they would come back to the president. So he knew it was coming eventually

Honest to God. To spend this much of your free time on such a post is amazing. Anything to make fun of the President huh? You're like an NFL official who has his hands on his flag before the play, just aching to throw it. It's quite clear. The President was obviously told for some time that new intel was going to come out with some sort of "conclsion" about the status of Iran's nuke program. I'm sure he was told along the way that they may draw the conclusion that it was halted in '03. Then, apparentlly on a Wednesday, they gave him the final result of the NIE report. Stop looking for foolish conspiracy theories. Forest through the trees man.

Seriously though does it really matter. Iran stopped their Nuke program in 2003?????? This is the same org that got the WMD in Iraq Intel wrong. So I can complletely understand to keep with your same policy in ragards to Iran. I mean if this is truly the case, that they no longer have a NuKe weapons program, then it looks like the Iraqi invasion in 2003 worked successful in 3 different ways:

1. Iraq- Saddam overthrown in weeks and his WMD program destroyed.

2. Lybia- Upon seeing this and seeing how serious Bush was and is, they announce they will no longer seek a weapons program and seek trade and economic ties with US and the west.

3. Iran- Interestingly enough, it looks like they stopped their program right around the same time but chose the other route as far as diplomatic relations to create an illusion of the strongest country of the middle east.

If this is the case and the time line proves to be correct as far as their halting of their arms program, then all of us including Lounge (Kip) Machine have to give credit to George W Bush and the policy that has been used in the middle east to disarm all of these radical countries and their threat to the people of the middle east and the United States.

But if this is not correct intel again, then I believe we still all have to give credit to Bush for standing strong and keeping on the same path to disarm or stop the continued development of a nuke in the hands of an unstable country and a maniacal leader. God forbid, if we just turned our heads and said Ok everything is fine and then in 1 or 2 yrs several thousand people or more are dead!!

God I spent so much fuckin time on this POST!

But Lunge, who knows other than you what he said? Now that you've deleted it and replaced it with your own juvenile retort, no one can judge for themselves what BoF had to say.

Besides, you're a grown boy. You're telling me that you can't handle someone all the way in Canada hurling a potential insult (or at least insulting perspective) in your direction??? For real??? Didn't you just do the same to me by telling me, oh dear, "fuck you"?

So what if he said something hurtful.? Ignore it. It's just one post. Better to leave it stand than make me and everyone else have to think twice about the gravity and relevance of your perspective when you indulge in the same behaviour and policies that you rail against.

He's trolling any thread of mine, and begging for attention.

I gave it to him.

Why would I report you? I'm telling you straight up man to man that you're a good guy, but this behaviour ain't and it diminishes you and your perspective.

Let me get this right: you're dead-set against water-boarding or other forms of interrogation that you might construe as "torture" on someone who just might have relevant information that can save lives, but someone on a david lee roth message board saying "boo" is enough to make you run and abandon your beliefs regarding the constitution?

Besides, you're being SELFISH. Katy, Joe Thunder, Thome, their posts are fucking HILARIOUS. You deleting them ruin a lot of potential yuks for all the rest of us, ya dumb prick!

Wow you're fired up tonight. I think were getting quite schematical here. I never was feared by anything the president said, but I can see how people would have fear of what is going on for sure with Iran's weapons program and if this crazed leader of Iran is trying to go through with the plans he has said himself he wants to do to Isreal and this country. THATS FEAR BRO! And to further my point, Bush would be a fuckin idiot to come out right away as soon as he heard and say "everything is fuckin cool with Iran" because the fuckin NAE intel says so. And if you really read the whole report it really doesnt say that any way. So no I don't think he lied and it sure as hell wasn't under oath.

The Huffington Post

In just three days, the White House has gone back and forth three times on what the president knew, and when he knew it, in regards to the NIE:

• On Monday, National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley said the president was told about this report "in the last few months."

• On Tuesday, the president said, "In August, I think it was John - Mike McConnell came in and said, We have some new information. He didn't tell me what the information was... And it wasn't until last week that I was briefed on the NIE that is now public."

• On Wednesday, White House press secretary Dana Perino said that in August, the president was told of the NIE. More importantly, despite the president's contention that he was not briefed on what might be in it, Perino said he was told that when the report was analyzed, it might show that "Iran does in fact have a covert nuclear weapons program, but it may be suspended."
