Had to return some Billabong shirts I received for Christmas so I wanted to see what I might trade them in for. Went to their website and apparently they've teamed with Metallica to make board shorts. Not much else I can say. See for yourself.

It's #4 under the main ad pic.

Anyone remember the days when they refused to make a music video for MTV because they viewed that as selling out? They finally caved in with "One".

yeah, that is why the "...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL" record was the last Metallica record i ever bought. I have not purchased a metallica record since 1989. first 4 album, still have 'em on vinyl.

My copy of "KILL 'EM ALL" is a first pressing, megaforce record original issue 1983. Not the neutered re-issue from elektra records.

And arguably, if it wasn't for that video, they may have never been as big as they've been since then....

Watching Some Kinda Monster was just depressing.

Here was a band that initally got noticed by gigging and word-of-mouth, and built up a very big following with pretty much zero airplay and no MTV.

18 or so years later, it's basically three businessmen who need Pro-Tools and career coaches to make music. I mean, there was no organic flow to any of the songs in the documentary; it's just Bob Rock and the band doing a bit of cut-and-paste with a bunch of uninspired riffs. Shit, even Jason Newstead...the one guy in the band who basically walked into a successful group in the late 1980s, decides to bail because he thinks Metallicas current MO is bullshit.

Sure, it's big money and understandable on one level, but why shouldn't Metallica stamp their logo on a bunch of merchandise? Their music is little but product these days, anyway.

Still a kick ass band, IMO. And they'll take anyone live. Anyone.

It's a shame that music fans can't embrace bands when they become succesful. Wouldn't it be sadder if Lars and James were exactly the same guys they were in 1985? Still playing straight E chords and churning out the same record every two years.

Yeah, some of their musical experiments haven't been to everyone's taste; and yes, their best albums are behind them, but what other band in their mid-40s makes albums as strong as those from 20 years ago (Rush and Maiden are the only two who spring to mind).

Point is, don't rag on someone for being succesful. You don't like their music for the past 15-20 years, don't listen to it.

As far as being greedy goes, other bands do far more IMO: Metallica has not issued a "remastered" version of their back catalogue with bonus tracks (hello Iron Maiden, how many reissues now?)); and they don't issue three versions of the same album ('special' edition 'tour' edition) like so many more 'credible' bands do.

Well put...

I will not fault Metallica for wanting to try something different...either you like it or you do not...what do they owe you?

Well said Sir, watching the egofest between Hetfield and Ulrich was was so disheartening. Metallica was absolutely fierce between the mid-80's to early '90's.... Now, like you said, they've got to have shrinks talk about their problems....

God love ya Binnie for putting up a good argument. But you're missing the main point of this whole thing. Metallica prided themselves as being the anti-sellout band. Not following trends, $9.98 cd DO NOT PAY MORE!, Dying on you knees conformity, etc.... Which is a big part of why the rockers back in the day swarmed around them, they were against the big corporate machine, cookie cutter artists, & the standard 3-minute track.

Now when I see Walmart shirts plastered with Rolling Stones or Kiss logos, it doesn't upset me because these bands were always about big marketing. Metallica are just a bunch of hypocrites going against everything they stood for in their heyday.

Oh well, I still play & enjoy the albums through And Justice For All...

I know what you mean, and I can't argue against that. But aren't they victims of their own success?

I suppose once you become as successful as they did circa 1992 you don't have any choice BUT to "sellout" - play the corporate game etc You will be selling lots of T-shirts, and all arena rock bands do merch. It's the easy route to take. Not like they didn't earn it, who toured harder?

But for my money, they could have sold out a LOT more. If they had really sold out, they would have tried to remake the "Black" album for the past 15 years, and they haven't. Whether you like "load" or not, it doesn't sound much like the "Black" album, and St. Anger is hardly corporate rock is it? Musically, they've never taken the easy route (whether you like the output or not, you have to admit that...)

I remember when I first heard Nothing Else Matters on the radio. I kept waiting for the song to get heavy...and I waited...and I waited...and I waited. I was so disgusted. I haven't bought a Metallica album, shirt, concert ticket, dvd or anything else since then.

Nothing Else Matters must be about money.

This honestly doesn't shock me. I mean if you can get PJ pants with Ride the Lightning or Justice's artwork on them you're not too far off from doing board shorts.

I just pray that the new album with Rick Rubin is what they say it is- A return to being that hungry band with alot of fire out to prove something to the world.

The Black Album was the end.

Yet strangely enough, I like that album... lol...

All this merchandising is common to all artists these
days, you dont make the $$$ off CD sales anymore...
Its all irrelevant anyway, after they cut their hair, recorded
black and started doing videos it wasnt the same..

In fact its never been the same since Cliff Burton
crashed the big bus into the pearly gates...

panamark, they did the black album and massive world tour that lasted 3 years. then cut their hair and made "load".

Load is the perfect mix of slower, classic metal and southern blues-rock sensibilty. Out of all of Metallica's albums it's the most unique and therefore my favorite.

Alot of people say the album isn't heavy enough yet you got tracks like Ain't My Bitch, 2x4, King Nothing, Wasting My Hate, and Outlaw Torn that are some of the heaviest riff's they ever wrote bar none! But no one really notices because they're listening with thier eyes.

g'day mate.

no offense,mate.........but after the black album come out i quit caring.
the last metallica record i purchased was "...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL".
i have staunchly refuse to spend any money on them since.
this is a band who said, and i quote, "we will never sell out" and "we will never make a music video".

thus because they have done both, i have not supported them since 1989.

kinda like "MUSIC FROM THE ELDER" was a good rock opera concept record, as long as you forget is done by KISS.

Exactly. It's a good record, just not a good Metallica record. People pigeonhole bands and limit what they are allowed to do.

Nothing Else Matters must be about money.

Or, it could be a genuinely heartfelt statement. To my eyes/ears it'd be more about money if they'd just churned out the Black Abum marks 2, 3 and 4 for the last 15 years; or if they were still playing thrash-tastic stuff - if you're a "true" artist, you won't be making the same music at 40 as you were at 25. People change.

Lets agree to disagree, good discussion though. Who'd have thought that people on this webiste could disagree without name-calling? :D

The hair cuts is when they lost me. They really sold out when the did that !! After a couple years of grunge I was looking for these guys & Gn'R to kick rock in the ass again with their new disc's. Then Gun's fell apart and Metallica come's out looking like homo's !!! A sad day in metal indeed !!! but they do kill live without question. Let's hope the new disc is back to THE OLD DAYS !! THEIR OLD DAY'S

I certainly didn't slag them for being successful. I loved the "black" album. Not as much as the ultimate Metallica kick-ass Ride the Lightning, but still...

Where they lost me is the shitty product after "Metallica" that was just a lame attempt to recapture the success. Load, followed by the even worse ReLoad. I had all kinds of hope for St. Anger and then it came out with nothing but more watered down Metallica, with those stupid sounding drums.

All bands have their ups and downs, but Metallica needs to get back to being balls out anti-establishment, and I don't think they can do it.

Gotta go with Binnie here. "Fans" who jumped ship after Justice missed some fine music. I love Kill Em All, Black and ReLoad. It's just good music. St. Anger not so much, but Metallica has earned a mulligan from me.

As far as videos, melodies, board shorts..etc, it has to do with people growing and maturing as human beings. 20 years ago, I lived on Pepsi, pizza and blonde cheerleaders. Now, it's sushi, sake and high-heeled CEO's. Each choice rocked my world.

Do yourself a favor and enjoy the music without putting these guys in a box... Me? I ain't buying the shorts.

Not a big fan of Metallica, though they're great live. Don't hate them though, their music doesn't always appeal to me.

However, catch some scenarios I've been in with some mates. Makes me wanna move to Germany sometimes:
Me: Do you like Metallica?
Mate: Yeah and if you don't you're not a true metalhead!

Me: Do you like Metallica?
Mate: Are they the ones who ruined Napster?
Me: No they sued their fans who used Napster
Mate: Same difference

Me: Do you like Metallica?
Mate: Yeah I love Enter Sandman!
Me: Ride the Lightning?
Mate ..........is that on Iron Maiden's Dance of Death?

Me: Do you like Metallica?
Mate: Well I don't know but SoM is so spiritual and enchanting! They're almost as good as Nightwish, and no one is allowed to diss them!

*conclusion: Emos = Chris Crocker*
