Christian Brando, the oft-embattled eldest son of Marlon Brando died on Saturday.

On Jan. 11, Brando had been taken into Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center after catching a serious case of pneumonia. When Brando died this past Saturday, he was comatose and on a respirator.

"His body was totally compromised," said Deborah Brando, Christian's ex-wife, and the daughter of Elvis Presley. "He'd lived so hard... this is just so sad."

Brando is perhaps best known for fatally shooting his half-sister's boyfriend, Dag Drollet, at Marlon Brando's Mulholland Drive residence in 1990. He served five years in prison for the voluntary manslaughter conviction, but life didn't become any easier for Brando when he was freed.

His acting career, which wasn't much of a career in the first place, stagnated after Brando left prison. To make matters worse, Brando's beloved half-sister, Cheyenne - whose exodus to Tahiti during Christian's trial helped him get a reduced sentence - killed herself just before Brando was released.

Christian Brando faded from media scrutiny over the next few years thanks, in part, to his use of various pseudonyms. But in 2001, his name popped up on the public's radar as he was mentioned during Robert Blake's murder trial.

Blake and his defense attorneys claimed Brando, who had dated the victim, Bonny Lee Bakley, had killed before and had a motive to kill Bakley, who at the time of her death had been naming him as the father of her 1-year-old child.

Brando was called to the witness stand, but he refused to appear, and he was soon cleared of any involvement in the crime.

In 2005, Brando's name once again hit headlines, and again for ignoble reasons, as he was charged with abusing his wife at the time, Deborah.

Between then and the time of Brando's death, he had reportedly been working under a fake name in construction.

Christian Brando is one of 11 biological and adopted sons and daughters of legendary screen actor, Marlon Brando. He is the only child of Christian's mother, actress Anna Kashfi, and Marlon Brando, and the couple divorced after a year-long marriage in 1958. Christian Brando's upbringing was rough, as he was the object of a drawn-out custody battle between his famous father and drug-abusing mother, until finally, father won out when Christian was 13.

Christian Brando was 49-years-old when he died.
