Mellencamp Deleted from McCain's Playlist
By Sarah Hall

John Mellencamp wants to make it clear—he doesn't want to R.O.C.K in John McCain's U.S.A.

Upon learning that songs of his, including "Our Country" and "Pink House," were being played at campaign events for the Republican senator and prohibitive presidential nominee, the liberal musician had his publicist draft a letter expressing his discomfort with the situation.

"Mr. Mellencamp identifies very strongly with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party and was supportive (with these same songs!) of the candidacy of John Edwards, on whose behalf he made several campaign appearances," read the letter sent to the campaign by spokesman Bob Merlis on Monday.

"Are you sure you want to use his music to promote Senator McCain's efforts?" the letter continued. "Logic says that the facts might prove to be an embarrassment, were they to be circulated widely."

Merlis said the singer couldn't imagine why McCain would want to be associated with him.

"You know, here's a guy running around saying, 'I'm a true conservative,' " Merlis told the Associated Press. "Well, if you're such a true conservative, why are you playing songs that have a very populist pro-labor message written by a guy who would find no argument if you characterized him as left of center?"

A spokesperson for the McCain campaign said Thursday that the songs have since been dropped from the senator's playlist, but declined to elaborate.

Merlis said Mellencamp has not yet endorsed another candidate since Edwards dropped out of the race on Jan. 30.

The rocker is scheduled to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Mar. 10.

Naw, he should replace it with Aerosmith's "Same Old Song And Dance", which is exactly what it will be if he is somehow elected President. I can't, for the life of me, imagine why anyone would want 4 more years of the same old shit we've had with this braindead chimp? I don't understand the sudden resurgence of McCain's campaign, and why so many people keep voting for this bastard, why so many people are happy with the status quo, why they want 4 more years of warmongering and want to keep this war going in Iraq which is bankrupting this country and costing so many of not only our soldiers' lives, but the lives of thousands of innocent Iraqis as well. This country cannot take four more years of a like minded administration, we simply can't afford it, literally and figuratively.

Anyone who lets some celebrity be it musician , actor , producer ,
director or whatever influence their decision on who to vote for is a moron.
These people have every right to back whoever they want , but when they use their status to influence their fans to vote the way the celebrity sees fit in my opinion they are out of line .
The should voice their opinion but it would be better if they made
it clear that everyone should vote for who they judge the better candidate not some celebrity's choice.
In the case of Johnny Cougar , he used to parade as the hero of the working man , the average Joe ,but after he married a supermodel
and the cost of a ticket to see him went through the roof ,his
demeanor changed , If you don't want to pay my price , stay home.
I like Elton Johns music but I'm not going to suck somebodies dick because he does .

Do you have to be an english major to post your opinion ?
If you disagree with my opinion say so.
I am stating my opinion not lecturing anyone .
If you would vote for someone just because someone you
idolize says to thats your right .
If Johnny Cougar doesn't want to be associated with some
candidate that's also his right.
I have much more respect for anyone that encourages freedom of choice to anyone that wants to ram their opinion on whatever down your throat.

BTW, "Johnny Cougar" was endorsing John Edwards. He hasn't moved that endorsement to anyone yet, but it's Obama who is getting the votes in the "Small Towns" where all the little "Pink Houses" are.

Pretty soon, we might hear Mellencamp singing "B.A.R.A.C.K. in the USA"

The entire thread went over your head, cadaverdump.

No one is telling you to vote based on a musician's endorsement.

The point of the thread, was that the McCain camp was using songs without permission or compensation FROM AN ARTIST KNOWN TO BE A LEFT WING ACTIVIST.

Now, if you had half a brain, and you were running the campaign of a Republican who was being accused of being a liberal, WOULDNT YOU MAKE SURE NOT TO USE A SOUNDTRACK OF LIBERAL SONGS BY A LIBERAL MUSICIAN WHO ADVOCATES A LIBERAL AGENDA??

But then if you had half a brain......

I wasn't trying to imply Cougar was wrong in not wanting his music used by someone he politically disagreed with .
I just feel some people not specifically Cougar but more of a Springsteen or Streisand type try to influence their fans
to promote their political agendas.
These people are entertainers not experts on politics .

Actually, idiot, many of John Cougar's songs, and his commitment to Farm Aid and other progressive causes is because he DOES know what it's like to live in the Real World. What the Reagan administration did to family farms, in order to benefit Frankenfood companies like Monsanto and ADM, directly affected the Mellencamp family, among many others.

My point is not a direct reply to the thread starter .But since the thread was about a musician and his political leanings , I was trying to state my opinion that I feel some celebrities including musicians use their
star power to push their own political agendas.I was not inferring that Cougar was doing this and as you said if he feels his music is being used to promote an agenda he does not support he has every right
to speak up.There are people out there that have the mindset that
if somebody I idolize feels a certain way or leans in one political direction I should too.Especially young people who have not yet
expeirienced life .

If Ted Nugent or some other conservative held concerts with the sole purpose of influincing his fans to vote his way just like the ones that held the "anyone but Bush" concerts a few years ago I would feel the same way.
There is nothing wrong with celebrities backing candidates but in my opinion some just go to far.
Like Streisand or Springsteen.
Elvis had the star power to have influinced his fans to vote a certain
way but he never did.

I agree .
I would go as far as to say if you weren't born here you shouldn't even have the right to vote , period.
Case in point ,A lot of people beleive in amnesty for illegals.
Next thing you know , they're citizens.
But their allegance is to Mexico or China or wherever they were born.
The US can not employ every person who can't make a decent living
where they came from.
Thats why we have so many homeless and so much crime.
They need to work to fix their countries not ruin ours.
No job should be given to any non-citizen unless there is no citizen qualified or willing to do the job.

But threaten me , insult me , I don't care .
Your opinion means nothing to me , hell I wonder if you can even voice an opinion.

cadaverhump, I just wanted to congratulate you on your new found ability to differentiate and properly use "your" (possessive) and "you're."

McCain is getting the "kiss of death" for his election hopes right now.

President Bush is about to publically endorse him.

This troll is not ruining any more threads in here with his scribbling of shit all over everything.

I don't care what anybody says, but his responses are getting dumped into Arielle's Dumper since he's nothing but a blatant troll at this point that has endlessly contradicted himself...

I don't think I could find 2 people that would vote for McCain now that Bush is endorsing him.

The stage is set for Hillary.

I want Obama and I think the majority of the country wants Obama. The only problem is that the Clintons are so law savvy that they'll be able to find the minute loopholes to make the votes swing in her direction.

I think the Clinton's are as big a criminal empire as people say that the Bush family has been.

But honestly Lounge, if you believe any candidate is going to be able to put a halt on the rising gas prices, then I think you might be fooled.

Depends on how owned they are by the Big Oil Lobby.

I agree... dumping his threads is one thing, but editing his posts and moving them elsewhere is something else IMO. Slippery slope. But I'm certainly not going to get in anyone's way.

You are probably right that gas prices are going to continue to rise regardless of who is elected. But there are things that can be done to ease the pain, including removing the goddamned SUBSIDIES we are giving to oil companies at a time when they continue to earn record profits at the expense of consumers.

Candidates who are not so beholden to the oil industry can actually make changes like this happen.

Well, I'm not editing this posts, just moving them somewhere else. We don't have that option to do it using modding controls of splitting off or merging here, for whatever reasons.

But this asshole has been shitting up this forum on purpose, off and on. He's nothing but a blatant troll that will gladly ruin threads if given the opportunity...

For too many years they've heard us say, "A gallon of milk costs more than a gallon of gas".

They're bathing in those worthless US dollars and Hugo Chavez is their bait.

heh heh...the knuckleboner's an idiot. i initally replied to this without selecting the "hide reply" function. not exactly good practice to quote hidden replies for the public to see, me thinks. oh well, at least i caught it...

in any case, my original reply blamed cheney for your troubles. if that bastard was on his game, you'd have your case.

in any case, while mailing a gift certificate's an option, another option is to simply have the (idiot) knuckleboner pick up the tab next time you go out drinking.

after all, i'm feeling kinda magnanimous...
