Ok, the BEST metal/rock band fronted by a woman was The Nymphs.
No arguments, no contests, they fuckin' smoked and Ingre Lorre was great.
The debut record was an incendiary blast of Stooges-esque punk. Loved 'em.

Gotta say Heart.
Ann Wilson is possibly the greatest female rock vocalist of all time.
Fuck that possibly shit , she is the best!!!

Bangles is a good call too..
I always thought they were MTV manufactured crap.
Then I saw them 2 years ago live in Sydney and
got a huge shock. They actually played all their
own instruments and basically kicked ass that night.
Sussana Hoffs still looks *EXACTLY* the same as she
did in the 80's. Couldnt believe it !

Wendy O Williams
Topped herself about 10 years ago,
used to perform with dildo microphones
(and used them)
She appeared in some B grade films too...
Kiss produced her 1984 album WOW
This wiki entry downplays her onstage
theatrics, I've seen Vag pics from her gigs...

Thanks 'Mark, I was only familiar with Wendy as a solo artist.
Cheers.

Christ in a shoebox, these days it's impossible to get a decent femal fronted band because they're all emo shit, trying to be cool and mysterious until the rest of the band end up kicking them out due to boredome *lulz*
But seriously, I saw a few cracking female fronted bands at Hard Rock Hell, like Crucified Barbara, Girlschool, Vixen, Lauren Harris, Twisted Sister *oooh bitch* but it's difficult to say who's the best overall. I admit Heart are pretty cracking though and I would love to see them live. *^_^*

The Donnas rock my socks... :)
Not the best by a long margin, but I figured they deserved honorable mention...

Depends on your definition of "rock".
Some of the bands mentioned definatly never
played what I call rock.
Some I never heard of.
Some were only mentioned for humor.
Heart was probably the most succesful.
Pat Benatar was capable of rock but mixed in the pop.
Janis Joplin rocked.
Rossington/Collins had a couple "southern rock" hits.
Alana Myles (not sure of the spelling ) did a good job on
"Black Vevet"
Nobody mentioned "Fleetwood Mac"
Stevie was a hottie .
Some L A dj once said she sounde like she was riding a black and decker vibrater while she sang.
How About Grace Slick?
