I live in Orkney, where barely any fucker has heard of Tom Petty. I wanted to know what people here thought of him. I think he's the Fuckin' MAN!

Any American points of view would be ace, as you guys hear him the most!

I love Tom Petty, classic Americana music. I don't think many can harmonize any better and he's the master thematic writing when it comes to angst, alienation, and really good love songs that are touching without being sappy. Mainly because he is one of the few songwriters that can genuinely express emotions without sounding like a pandering douche...

Besides sounding like the bastard son of Bob Dylan , I think he's written some fantastic songs. He's carried the torch for the Rickenbacker 12 string jangle in R&R.
Is it true his ex-drummer Stan Lynch torched Petty's hom back in the 90's?

Tom & Stan had their "issues", but I doubt it ever went that far. Tom's house did get burnt down, but I doubt any band members were involved. I think the cause of the fire was electrical, if I remember correctly.

It's too bad he and Stan couldn't work their shit out though. Tom & the Heartbreakers still put on one Hell of a live show, but the albums have been missing something since Stan Lynch left the band. :(

I'd start with the box set "Playback"

It's a pretty good sampling of the first half of Tom & The Heartbreakers career, along with enough rarities to make the box worth the purchase even if you eventually buy all the studio albums.

I'm assuming you can get it in the UK. Amazon carries it at least.

FORD had the best recommendation but I would suggest Damn The Torpedo's. Great fucking Album and what really put them on the map.
