LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Patrick McGoohan, an Emmy-winning actor who created and starred in the cult classic television show "The Prisoner," has died. He was 80.

McGoohan died Tuesday in Los Angeles after a short illness, his son-in-law, film producer Cleve Landsberg, said Wednesday.

McGoohan won two Emmys for his work on the Peter Falk detective drama "Columbo," and more recently appeared as King Edward Longshanks in the 1995 Mel Gibson film "Braveheart."

But he was best known as the title character Number Six in "The Prisoner," a surreal 1960s British series in which a former spy is held captive in a small village and constantly tries to escape.

That's a shame. The Prisoner was outstanding.

There is a remake of the series in the works for 2009, starring James Caviezel. This is hardly good news, yet AMC will be rerunning all 17 of the original episodes of the show in advance of the new one.

Since the "celebrity deathwatch" was invoked in this thread...

It looks like Peter Falk's ticket is about to be punched.

Also...has anyone heard any updates on Sean Connery? Last I heard, the old codger wasn't doing too well...

Peter Falk's wife opposes conservatorship

LOS ANGELES -- Peter Falk's wife of 32 years is opposing a bid by the Emmy-winning actor's daughter to place him under a conservatorship, court documents show.

Falk entrusted his wife, Shera Falk, to manage his affairs and care before his health deteriorated, according to documents filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court. Catherine Falk applied to be named conservator over her father's affairs in December, stating that he was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

The former "Columbo" star's wife contends that Falk is receiving adequate care and does not have a close relationship with his daughter. Her filing includes declarations from the couple's accountant, housekeeper and numerous friends, including an ex-wife of Johnny Carson and actor Joe Mantegna.

Shera Falk's filing does not address whether her husband has Alzheimer's and does not include a declaration from Falk's doctors. But the filing does dispute three "factual inaccuracies" in Catherine Falk's petition; the Alzheimer's claim is not among them.

The filing also says the actor is cared for around-the-clock by a nursing staff in a guest house at their Beverly Hills home, which was converted into an art studio and was easier for Falk to navigate after undergoing hip surgery in June.

A hearing on whether the conservatorship is necessary is scheduled for next week.

Falk won four Emmys for his starring role in "Columbo." He also received Academy Award nominations for movie roles in 1959 and 1960.

Connery seems to be fine for a 78 year old.

I hope so. Sean Connery is very cool...an actor's actor.

I seem to remember some scuttlebutt when they were gearing up to shoot "Indiana Jones & the Temple of the Crystal Skull" that Connery couldn't be in it due to failing health.

In the film, they kill him off. Which doesn't make much sense considering that he drank from the Holy Grail in "The Last Crusade", and should have lived into his 200's at least...

Of course, given the piece of cinematic shit that "Crystal Skull" turned out to be, Connery should be glad he didn't have his name on it.

He's retired now. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was the final straw for him which was a disaster. I guess getting paid $17m for it made it easier for him.

He nearly came out of retirement for Indie IV but decided against it in the end.
