DALLAS, Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Jim Robinson, President of ABC Radio Networks, on the passing of Paul Harvey:

Paul Harvey was one of the most gifted and beloved broadcasters in our nation's history. As he delivered the news each day with his own unique style and commentary, his voice became a trusted friend in American households. His career in radio spanned more than seven decades, during which time countless millions of listeners were both informed and entertained by his "News & Comment" and "Rest of the Story" features. Even after the passing of his loving wife Angel in May 2008, Paul would not slip quietly into retirement as he continued to take the microphone and reach out to his audience. We will miss our dear friend tremendously and are grateful for the many years we were so fortunate to have known him. Our thoughts and prayers are now with his son Paul Jr. and the rest of the Harvey family.

He was 90 years old.

Paul hadn't been doing much of his show over the last year, mostly his son would fill in.

Goddamn, first my newspaper calls it quits and now this. All the old school ways of getting the news are slowly fading away.

Thank God for the internet.

NEW YORK (CBS) ―

Report: Radio Legend Paul Harvey Dies

Paul Harvey, a radio legend who began his career in 1933 while he was still in high school, has died, ABC News reported Saturday. Harvey was 90.

Harvey began his radio career on KVOO-AM while in high school in his hometown of Tulsa, Okla. He was known for his unique, staccato-style delivery of news combined with commentary, which resonated with tens of millions of Americans for more than seven decades.

Harvey reportedly died in a Phoenix hospital, near his winter home, with family members nearby.

"Paul Harvey was one of the most gifted and beloved broadcasters in our nation's history," said Jim Robinson, president of ABC Radio Networks which broadcast Harvey's show. "As he delivered the news each day with his own unique style and commentary, his voice became a trusted friend in American households.

"We will miss our dear friend tremendously and are grateful for the many years we were so fortunate to have known him. Our thoughts and prayers are now with his son Paul Jr. and the rest of the Harvey family."

President George W. Bush bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Harvey in 2005. He also was an inductee in the National Radio Hall of Fame and, in 1992, received the Paul White Award, the highest honor presented by RTNDA, the Radio-Television News Directors Association.

Harvey covered the U.S. Navy as it began to build up its fleet in the Pacific during World War II. He was returning to the mainland from Hawaii when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, according to his Web site. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served until 1944.

According to his official bio, Harvey moved to Chicago after leaving the Corps, where he began broadcasting from the ABC affiliate WENR-AM. In 1951, he began his coast-to-coast "News and Comment" on the ABC Radio Networks, which ultimately endeared him to fans worldwide.

Harvey's wife, Angel, who produced his radio programs, died in 2008. Angel Harvey is credited with creating his popular radio feature "The Rest of the Story."

Harvey was born Paul Harvey Aurandt on Sept. 4, 1918. He is survived by his son, Paul Aurandt Jr., known also as Paul Harvey Jr.

While I didn't always agree with his political slant, Paul Harvey was someone I looked forward to listening to usually three times a day in the eighties and early nineties. He truly had a way with a story.

RIP
