The color in the neck pocket tells me the guy really airbrushed it, as opposed to laminating a lazerprint of the famous London hospital montage - or wherever the Fair Warning scene came from.

This guys' really good with the colors.

I dig projects like this, where you make a silk purse from a sows' ear so-to-speak.. but the tuners look really incorrect installed with the holder tab upside down in back.

jhale667
06-07-2009, 03:14 AM
I'll give you that nit-pick - he probably re-used the same tuners off the neck...

GAR
06-07-2009, 04:41 PM
For sure! If I was gonna upside-down reuse these old Gotohs- which are my fave tuner key- I would have shifted the keys south another 1/4" - 3/8" for better left-hand access.

But I like it - it looks alright. I'm fine with headstock mods, and have a few myself.

Keep in mind, the original 57-59 Gibson Explorer's headstocks were modded and none of those gluejoints have been documented to fail so I think this mod job will last a lifetime.

He even took the time to groove the underside of the headstock to form sort of a rabbeted edge to piece a glueable edge. I think this guy's woodwork is as good as his paint because he considered how to create a strong bond beforehand.. some guys would have done differently.

If I were to do it, I would have used a 4" oscillating spindle sander to make a radius there instead, then cut a 4" semicircled edge and just epoxied that in. But this was just as good I think, a little labored but its fine.

letsrock
06-08-2009, 09:41 AM
Good to see nobody is bitching about how many times he wrapped the strings around the tuners.

I just emailed this to the guys in my KISS tribute. They love the guitar. Great Job.

I had an 80's Gibson Explorer that had the real bad pin stripes paint job and stuck as many KISS stickers on it as I could kind. People loved that guitar and as usual I wish I had that guitar back.

The detail on this guitar is excellent. From the flames to the boots. Excellent work!!!!!!

Actually, I correspond with a dude that runs a fairly-well known guitar blog from P-Mark's neck of the woods, and pretty sure even he's aware of him, he's got nearly a couple thousand MySpace friends and nearly as many on FB...so he's slowly catching on...globally..

Well, one day I do want him to do a Fair Warning for me...strictly to hang on the wall in the living room at my place and jam on at home, probably wouldn't gig w/it.

The one he's gonna do for me in a few months here is a bomber/no camo/no numbers solid metallic (now w/bullet-holes!) :D graphic. A little more subdued than these last couple I've posted (and very similar to this particular guitar's original incarnation), but I've already sent him the design for it, and I know he's going to knock it out of the park. :rockit:

Lookin' killer already... :baaa:

Thanks. I had a long conversation with him about how much distress/rust to put on it, to better match the slightly road-worn 80s Charvel neck...it's not TOO hammered, but does show some wear, and I didn't want a battle-scarred neck on a pristine body, and he totally got what I was talking about...I'm stoked. :baaa:

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s720x720/312080_10150379655207246_620012245_9869214_3171164 53_n.jpg

With this neck (and hardware)? Yes and yes.

That is now the official "before" shot. :lmao: Not sure how long the clear will have to cure (I know he's using a new type that cures in way less time than older ones), but I can't wait to get it back and re-assemble it. But he's a very cool guy to deal with, too. We're already talking about another slightly wackier project. :hee:
