Hey Waldo...got a question for ya!! The kit Al, was using around the "1984" era (the one with the horn in the bass drum) was that horn reversed wired to act like a mic for sub frequincies? Thanx for your time bro!!!-Benjamin

Doug, I'm looking and as soon as I find something I'll let you know.

No proof of this but my guess and it's just a guess is that they were there for looks, it may of been used as a pseudo amp but I have no proof either way at this point.

Still looking, man.

I agree with you, and that's exactly what I thought. So exciting! You really have a wonderful idea! I believe that you've got it right. Pallet Racking (http://www.rackingchina.com)

On the 1984 tour as on the album, Al used elecrtonic kick drums, as far as I know...

I had a pretty damn good seat at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum for the 1984 tour and the drums sounded very much like the 1984 album...

My guess if they were passive.

If those horns had drivers, it would sound like shite.

Yeah, I couldn't imagine drivers in those horns...

But having the horns properly mounted could provide good results for a mic...

Just speculating, but it's a bit interesting even though these observations are 25 plus years too late...

Van Halen was loud as hell as well as very clear sounding live, as I remember compared to other bands of the time. So, maybe there was something to the mics, horns and extended Bass drums...just trying to get massive clear volume, which they had...

Too bad the 2007-08 shows were drowned in distorted everything...

The only thing I could hear fairly well at the shows I attended was Dave and the sampled backing vocals...

That white drumset looks like '88, Monsters of Rock tour. I remember him having a rotating riser and Eddie making jokes about it. Turning around and seeing the back of his head.

Exactly. In that tone range you have to push air to get the thump. I don't think anything other than an open back horn would work.

I got to help set up three VH shows in 1984. I've seen that kit up close and personal. I don't know about the bass drum horns but Al uses huge drumsticks and busts drum heads constantly. The drum tech replaces certain heads for every show. Basically my job was to move equipment in and out of the trucks and got to work the barricade one show.

I did work for various bands and VH had the best road crew. I was expecting huge egos but was pleasantly suprised. When I worked the barricade we had a meeting with Big Ed Anderson himself getting our instructions on what to do. At the time I had no idea he was Roth's bodyguard.

Hey, I bought some Spree and Starburst FaveReds last time I was up the road at the 'Jester's Court Too' Shell station / Truck Stop / Casino / Quiznos...
