Fred Phelps Raises Money for pro-LGBT Causes

The Rotting Cryptkeeper's family made a whirlwind tour through the National Capital Region today and indirectly raised money for the causes they hate. The best part is, the Phelps' family will recieve a lovely thank you card with the amount he raised from everyone who donated. From Kellen Baker via the Bilerico Project (profiled here):




This upcoming Monday, March 30, Phelps and his clan from the Topeka-based Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) will be bringing their so-called "Love Crusade," also known as "God Hates Fags" or "God Hates America," to the DC area to picket Fairfax High School, George Mason University, several embassies, and the White House. Phelps and WBC have gained notoriety over the last fifteen years by waging a publicity war against America, which Phelps calls a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah. WBC takes every opportunity to protest events ranging from LGBT Pride Weeks to the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now it's our turn - and I can't wait.

On Monday, join us from 11:30 AM to 12:15 PM in front of the White House for one of the DC area's three Phelps-A-Thons. Started by Boston-based LGBT activist Chris Mason, Phelps-A-Thons are an easy way to harness the voices of hatred in support of a good cause. The way it works is simple: for every minute that they spread their hate, they'll be raising money for organizations that support LGBT rights through your pledges and the pledges of supportive friends and family members.


They hate. You pledge. We raise money for LGBT rights.





The event at the White House will be raising money for Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence, a local DC group that opposes hate-based violence in all its forms, and the events at Fairfax High School and George Mason University will benefit each school's Gay-Straight Alliance and Pride Week, respectively.

If you can't be there in person at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave at 11:30 on March 30 to keep an eye on the scoreboard as the WBC crowd racks up the minutes, get some good karma by turning hatred into a positive contribution to our community. I can't say how much this is a really clever idea. Turning hate into something positive for the community. I encourage everyone no matter where you live, to keep an eye on the godhatesfags.com website (sorry, no link love here) and organize other Phelps-A-Thons for every protest they make. If they protest a church, raise money for the church. If they protest a school, raise money for the school or GSA. If they protest a funeral, raise money for the family, care packages, or local VFW, USO chapters.

Corona del Mar High School Phelps-A-Thon

Fred Phelps’ clan is coming to Corona del Mar High School! The “God Hates Fags” Westboro Baptist Church is planning to picket Corona del Mar High School because of the school’s production of RENT, a play that has gay characters. Fred Phelps and his group travel all across the United States spreading their message of hate and lies about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.



However, when the Phelps group comes to Newport Beach to protest at Corona del Mar High School, they will actually be raising money for LGBT equality.



Driving Equality is hosting a Phelps-A-Thon to counter Fred Phelps’ hateful message. For every minute the “God Hates Fags” clan is protesting, we will be collecting donations for Orange County Equality Coalition (OCEC), a local organization working to advance LGBT equality and for the Corona del Mar High School gay/straight alliance. The Phelps clan will be protesting at Corona del Mar High School from 2:15 PM to 3:15 PM on April 24th. You can pledge any amount you chose, whether it be $0.25, $0.50, $1, or even $2 for every minute they protest. You can even pledge a flat rate for the entire time the group will be demonstrating. First, we are using Phelps’ own hateful message to raise funds for a good cause, one that will help counter the lies that are being spread about LGBT people. Second, After the event, we will send Phelps a thank you card, telling him how much money he raised for LGBT equality.

This will certainly upset the group and it is possible that they will stop protesting in order to stop our fundraising.



On the “God Hates Fags” website, Phelps has this to say about the upcoming protest at the school:



“Corona del Mar High School - Jews Killed Jesus, love fags! 2101 Eastbluff Drive WBC to picket this High School, and the goofy Jewish bastards who pretend they have a cause against the Lord and against His anointed. Check out this good verse: Romans 11:11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. Is this what you blind Christ-rejecting Jews are protesting on behalf of? Latest news from Orange County reads: "A former Corona del Mar High School teacher has been charged with molesting two young girls and keeping hundreds of images of child pornography at his home, prosecutors said today." Stop lying to these children, putting them into the hands of child molesters, repent while you can! "Rent" is but the catalyst for this epic event. AMEN!”

Highlighting the differences in rights, laws, and amendments between the states will shed light on the current social standing of queer individuals today. I hope to create a dialogue about the disparities across the nation, and what can be done to end discrimination for all.

Walt Whitman High School Phelps-A-Thon

Fred Phelps’ clan is coming to Walt Whitman High School! The “God Hates Fags” Westboro Baptist Church is planning to picket Walt Whitman High School because of the school is named after a gay man. Fred Phelps and his group travel all across the United States spreading their message of hate and lies about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.



However, when the Phelps group comes to Bethesda to protest Walt Whitman High School they will actually be raising money for the school’s Gay Straight Alliance group.
