The city of Venice has announced a plan to utilize algae in a different way than we're used to hearing about. The Italian city plans to produce 50 percent of its electricity needs from an algae-based power plant instead of fossil fuels.

The water-filled city is turning what has become a nuisance into a renewable energy resource. The city will be producing electricity from two types of algae that are brought in clinging to ships and regularly grow over the seaport. The algae will be cultivated and treated in laboratories to turn it into fuel. The fuel will then be used to power turbines in a new 40 MW power plant in the center of the city.

In order to make the new power plant truly carbon neutral, any CO2 produced by the process will be fed back to the algae.

The innovative project will cost the city $264 million and should be operating in two years.

If this works and does what it says it will do, what a great idea.

That is extemely clever !

We have a sewerage treatment plant in Sydney that is basically
a huge sealed tank with some kind of organism that loves to eat
shit. You wouldnt want to drink the water output from this plant,
but they are building new secondary "grey water" lines to new
estates so you can use it to water the garden, wash the car
etc, everything except drink it. You still have your normal
clean water feeds too clearly marked ..
As we are still in drought (have been for years) I reckon
this concept is cool too..

Yeah it is.
See these are the kind of concepts that need to be explored. Turning shit, literally, into viable resources. With all the waste, human and otherwise, we need to have options like this. Purely hypothetical but.......say instead of taking your trash to the curb, you could put it into a device that would either power something in your home or do something beneficial for your home. We used to compost our left over food but I'm talking about for the average person.

As human beings we will start implementing these measures
once there is undeniable proof that we have fucked everything up.
There is so much that can be done. Even a basic wind fan
on your roof and a solar panel for example. Even if both only
give you 2% of your daily requirements, multiply that across
every home on earth, and suddenly there is your difference..

The true rulers of this planet are the energy owners/companies,
its not in their interests for these new concepts to take off,
and they wield total control over goverments and economies.

Something like the internet will evolve, where its a self
perpetuating uncontrollable entity, and the energy companies
will finally have to take it up the ass, instead of shoving it
up all our asses..

Fuck, I remember experimenting with a lemon and combinations
of pairs of dissimilar metal strips, basically poking the two
strips into a lemon, (generating DC electricity)
and finding combinations that would
give you results close to a AA batttery !!! And I was 8 years old ??

There must be a plethora of energy alternatives over the years
that have been hushed over due to the power of the energy companies.

Spot on Mark.
It's like forcing the oil companies to come up with alternate fuels.......why the fuck should they when they are posting record profits. In who's best interest do you think they are working for?

This has been a wonder of mine for some time. As Nick knows, I speak a lot of biodiesel and cellusosic (no idea if I spelled that right, I'm tired and don't fucking care) ethanol. It is fascinating and I've put money into it (stocks). They have bred bacteria in a lab that, as was put above, shits out energy. They organism takes in bio material (in this case algae) and shits out ethanol, literally. If only industry (power plants and trucking) to use it, the amount of pollution and the price of fossil fuels would be drastically reduced.

I was just reading about a battery they have invented using this same type
of approach. It doesnt give out ethanol, it gives out electricity.
Exciting stuff ! I will see if I can find the link

Genetically programmed virus, used as the scaffolding for this
rechargeable biological battery..... Way cool !

50 Percent?

I can't see that happening.
I live about 40 mins away.
I can't imagine there being very much algae in the cold months.
It gets cold as shit here in the winter.
Well, cold for me.

Breasts,
Sarge

Do they still let you feed the pigeons in Piazza San Marco ?? I had heard they were thinking about banning it because of fear of diseases. My kids were small at the time, got some great pictures of the boys feeding them...

They have "reclaimed" water lines here in Tampa and Clearwater, and you can tell when they're running. Phew!

Vegetarians are a bunch of weak-tit pussies... humans are hunter/gatherers not fuckin grazers. Know your place in the food chain boy!!

Lose the vegetarians and we reduce the carbon footprint even more... hell throw in your band of oxygen thieves and this planet would be a far finer place!!
