Egyptian Archaeologists have found dozens of brightly-painted 4,000-year-old mummies in an oasis located south of the capital Cairo.

According to Egypt's antiquities chief, Zahi Hawass, The linen-wrapped mummies were unearthed in a necropolis near the Ilahun pyramid in Fayoum oasis.

"The mission found dozens of mummies in 53 rock-hewn tombs dating to the Middle Kingdom", Hawass told AFP.

"Four of the mummies date back to the 22nd Dynasty (931 to 725 BC) and are considered some of the most beautiful mummies found," he said.

The mummies are painted in bright turquoise, terracotta and gold, which were the traditional colors of ancient Egypt.

Led by Abdel-Rahman El-Ayedi, the team also found a funerary chapel with an offering table, which dates back to the Middle Kingdom and was probably used until the Roman era (30 BCE to 337 CE).

According to Hawass, 15 painted masks were also discovered during the excavation along with amulets and clay pots.

Wow. I had only seen the one photo at the top.

Those are badass!

I hope the artisans who created those were rewarded heavily in the afterlife!

I wouldn't mind being a mummy like this when I die.
And also being burried with a ton of weed like this ole story I just found:

The world's oldest stash of marijuana has been found in far western China, according to an article in the Journal of Experimental Botany.

An ancient Caucasian people, probably the Indo-European-speaking Yuezhi whose fair-haired mummies keep turning up in Xinjiang province, seem to have buried one of their shamans with a whopping 789 grams of high-potency pot 2,700 years ago.

That's about 28 ounces of killer green bud, worth perhaps $8,000 at today's street prices, and enough to keep Harold and Kumar happy for a couple of days.

"It was common practice in burials to provide materials needed for the afterlife," lead author Ethan B. Russo, a practicing neurologist and prominent medicinal-marijuana advocate based in Missoula, Mont., tells the Canadian Press. "No hemp or seeds were provided for fabric or food. Rather, cannabis as medicine or for visionary purposes was supplied."

But the researchers couldn't tell if the weed was meant to be smoked or eaten. No pipes, bongs or rolling papers were found in the tomb.

The ancient Greek historian Herodotus relates how the Scythians, Iranian-speaking nomads who roamed the steppes to the west of the Yuezhi in the first millennium B.C., liked to throw marijuana onto bonfires to induce trancelike states. It's possible the buried shaman followed similar practices.

I was in Egypt during January and was absolutely blown away by the ancient culture. A very humbling experience.

I was blown away by the price of beer which was a major ripoff.

I guess that's why walking up to the Valley of the Kings I was the only one clinking away with a bag of booze. If I ever go back I'm going to hire a guide to carry the provisions.

It was hard work in 110 degree heat.

I know what you mean - I guess drinking isn't a major part of the culture there so they have to import all of the booze. Since I don't drink anymore, it didn't bother me much - I did break out into a cold sweat every time the Mrs ordered wine with her meal though :D

Drinking is not a part of my culture either.

I sure as hell would love to check out the Valley Of The Kings while high on some kickass hash though!
